Was really good as a rwb in 2016-17 (minus the FA Cup final). The fact that he couldn't get consistent time in an attacking role at Liverpool, Stoke, West Ham (trying to remember his loans) isn't really a good sign.

Huh? Maybe you can look down on the Richarlson deal, but today alone we’ve got Bernard, Mina ( A HUGE NEED) Gomes and possible Zouma for £30 million

Richarlson deal is atrocious, most of the money spent last year was wanton spending, and I’m far from convinced Mina or Zouma or Mina are going to be the answer in the back, even if they are an upgrade. JMO of course.

We have a 39 year old in Jags and Keane who moves like a log in molasses trying to run a high line. Now we have a player that plays a high line in both club and country. We will probably play Holgate over one of the other two. That shows the upgrades they are

Are you talking about Mina? Mina barely played club football last year. 300 minutes at Barca. Maybe I missed it but I didn't see Columbia playing a high line in the World Cup.

He still trained in it. You guys haven't seen just how slow our line is. I can see the hate for the Richarlson deal. But the Mina deal is a good one in a place of huge need and I'll argue this until he commits his first howler.

He was fantastic at the world cup.. one of the top 3 players for Columbia at the event. This is a nice move for Everton if he can build on that form

We had Davinson Sanchez playing next to him so a lot of us were probably paying closer attention to Colombia's defense. I know at least I was.

Obviously Barca saw something in him otherwise they never would have signed him, and maybe he'll turn out to be a very good player. But my impression of him from the world cup (admittedly a small sample size) is that he's not currently a great defender.

how was he a bad defender? lewandoski, sane, and your golden boy kane scored a total of one (1) goal against them, and that was off of a questionable PK

He defended fine in the World Cup, but the big thing is if he's even good. Then he is an upgrade.
I get it, Everton got burned on all but one of their summer signings last year. But last year they were big money or high salary moves for 5 people who played the same position. At least the moves today give us new people in positions of real need (CB, LB and CDM)

I’m not hating, I just think Everton have spent a ton of money the past two windows on some pretty questionable deals. There’s zero chemistry in the squad and I think that showed last season.

I won’t pretend to know how good he truly is, but most pundits I’ve read or heard on the radio have said his World Cup was inflated by his goals, which covered up otherwise shaky defending.

He seemed slow and had a tendency to be out of position. Again, just my armchair opinion. I'm far from an expert judge on soccer talent. If he was really that great then why did Barca sign another CB this summer and sell Mina instead of Vermaelen?

As for holding Lewandowski, Mane, and Kane to one goal... is that really an impressive statistic from the past world cup? Germany looked terrible. England's attack was not good. And Mane was hardly prolific (1 goal total).

You're almost bending over backward to hate on this. It's a good signing for us. We have 2 bad CBs and one CB who is young, unproven and injured (Holgate). That's it for Everton, we are that weak in the CB position. We got a good player off a good World Cup for barely 30 million. That's actually pretty good business.

they made a €20 million profit off of him in six months. selling vermaelen would’ve yielded a much smaller profit. I’m not saying he’s elite, but he’s definitely not a bad defender

yes, holding three of the best goal scorers in all of soccer to one penalty kick goal in 3 games is impressive. Kane won the golden boot for fuck’s sake

Counter point - with as desperate as united/Jose were for a CB, don’t you think they would’ve gotten him if they rated him?

I was “critical” of Mina in the WC thread compred to most by saying he had a good WC defensively and it was better offensively.

I still thought he was good defensively though.

Seems like a nice signing for Everton, especially when considering what they’ve got at CB and what CBs are going for

Not a reply to you. Maybe Mina will be very good for you, but if Silva is going to try to press and play a high line then I think that might exacerbate the weaknesses in Mina's game (being slow and not always in position). He'd probably be a better fit for a team that likes to sit back and play with a deeper defense. But if your defense is already as terrible as you're alluding to then I guess you don't have anything to lose.

My reply was going to be to three stacks and I can already see myself saying the same thing over and over, which is something I'd rather avoid.

there could be a litany of reasons why a deal wasn’t done with a particular club. Barcelona sold Digne to Everton and were negotiating a lon for Gomes. stuff like that could’ve factored in

I mean this right here kind of settles the debate on whether or not Everton overpaid imo.

6 total appearances and a good WC shouldn't add €20m in value over 6 months. That's overpaying, plain and simple.

Can only imagine how much money they asked United for.
