The Expanse author James S.A. Corey is writing a new space opera trilogy Spoiler The Expanse author James S.A. Corey is writing a new space opera trilogy 10 It’s set in a separate world from The Expanse By Andrew Liptak@AndrewLiptak May 11, 2018, 9:28am EDTSHARE Art: Orbit Books Coming off of this morning’s news that the Syfy channel was not going to renew The Expanse for a fourth season, there is some positive news for fans of the series: Orbit Books has announced that it has signed Expanse author James S.A. Corey for three books of a new space opera series. Corey is actually two authors: Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who co-wrote The Expanseseries, which is expected to run for nine novels, the last of which will hit bookstores in 2019. That series has become a popular hit with readers and was adapted as a television show on the Syfy channel that premiered in 2015 with Abraham and Franck as producers. The duo have written outside of the series before: they wrote a Star Wars novel about Han Solo in 2014, Honor Among Thieves. Abraham tells The Verge that “Orbit is where James S.A. Corey really began, and I’m delighted that we have another projected queued up with them once The Expanse is complete.” Rather than being a part of their The Expanse universe, this new series will be set in a completely new world. In the press release, Ty Franck notes that where The Expanse drew on things like Ridley Scott’s film Alien and Alfred Bester’s novel The Stars My Destination, this new series is their “exploration of the high concept science fiction that followed [The Golden Age of science fiction], with books like Dune and Hyperion and The Left Hand of Darkness.” Abraham says that “It’s big spectacle far future space opera, while never losing our focus on the complexity of human nature in these strange new settings.” No title or cover art for the series have been announced yet, but Orbit says that the trilogy will hit bookstores after the final installment of The Expanse series is published next year.
I watched 2 episodes of the show. Should I just stop and read the books first? Is the show even worth watching?
The show is worth watching, but I think it would be more enjoyable with the knowledge of the books going in. Granted I cant speak for the opposite, but the show follows the books pretty closely. Moves around some story lines, and combines characters, but it's pretty good.
I've watched the first season of the show and I'm 15% of the way through the 3rd book. Spoiler I'm not thrilled that Mao's daughter is the antagonist in the 3rd book, at least initially, against Holden. Mao killed who knows how many people and could have destroyed human life but Holden is the asshole. I'm sure this will get more complex as I get further but annoyed me initially.
From Orbit Books: Fans of The Expanse: We know that you have been looking forward to TIAMAT’S WRATH this December. But because we are now entering the home stretch of this amazing series and we all want to make sure we get it right, we have asked the authors to give our editorial and sales teams some extra time to prepare for the launch. The new publication date will be in March 2019. We know you’re going to love this next chapter, and thank you for your patience. Spoiler
GRRM hurt me and I've never gotten over it, should start a support group for emotionally battered readers.
I need to re-read the books. Im getting him mixed up w Duarte, but still cant really remember all that
That casting choice is weird. Gorman is a good actor, but my mind is having trouble reconciling him as Murtry. I'm sure he'll have no trouble playing a contemptible human being though.
Yeah, pretty sure Ty was GRRM's assistant and Daniel knows him well since he's from NM and has collaborated with him a few times
I have it ready to read, have to finish the book I'm currently reading and then decide whether to read it, or Pet Sematary first. Wife really wants to go see the new movie.
The original Pet Sematery movie scared the living shit out of me as a kid. Im about a third into this book. So far so good.
Oh mannnnnnn. That was great. Spoiler Starting out w Avasarala's funeral was a bummer. Especially since it was on Laconia and they kind of co-opted her life/ect. She would have hated that. Sucked to see Bobbie go out, but she went out like a badass. She finally got her revenge for Ganymede in a way. I figured out Timothy was Amos, fairly quickly. I kept waiting for him to do something badass and rescue Holden or assassinate Duarte. Then for him just to get killed in an ambush felt weak as hell and I was so pissed that he just didnt do much and then died. Felt like awful treatment of his character. (This is what made me post the "holy fuck holy fuck holy fuck" post Amos and Avasarala are my two favorite characters. Losing them both was a gut punch. I felt when they were hinting at those repair proto-molecule / nanobots reviving him - it was a little too easy, but I became convicned that was goign to happen because there's no way they let Amos go out so uneventfully. TBH during the siege of Laconia, I kind of forgot about that until he popped back up at the very end. Naomi is a tactical genius for all her leans towards peaceful ends. Her killing Marco a few books ago and now this, are off the charts. I was bummed that Drummer was so sidelined. Barely go anything from her. I wish we could have at least gotten her reaction to Saba's death. You can definitely see the GRRM influence in this book. You got Amos Stoneheart, and the internal squabbles of man kind being insignificant compared to the threat that is lurking. IM glad his influence is in the plot devices, and not that publication schedule. Fuck you George.
About halfway through (through Ch. 29) Spoiler First, damn, Amos dead ... that sucks. I kind of had a gut feeling he would be killed, though, once it became clear he was hanging out with Theresa. Second, are the brother and sister with black eyes the same two kids from Strange Dogs? It's been a while since I read that but I think that's who they are.
full book spoilers Spoiler I got that the kids were from Strange Dogs immediately Also called Timothy being Amos and Lady Amos Stoneheart ($1 to Truman) so I felt like I did pretty well with this book. Really interested in where we go from here w.r.t. Duarte Can't wait for some Dr. Okoye and the big ass green Diamond in the next book
Spoiler I got Amos being Timothy immediately, mainly because of the short fiction introducing that part of him. The diamond is super interesting. I do wonder how much history of the other species they can stuff into a single book. I need some novellas or something to expound on that
Spoiler Will be interesting to see how they wrap up this upcoming war with the aliens, what they are, etc. all in one book
Blew through Persepolis Rising this weekend. Very enjoyable. Gonna start Tiamat's Wrath imminently. Was PR a shorter book than usual? I feel like I got through it a lot quicker than the others.
