One of the best longform stories I've read in a while: https://magazine.atavist.com/story/10765 It's really long but incredibly entertaining and interesting. It's the story of the Coronado Company, one of the first big marijuana smuggling operations in California in the 60s/70s
Real good one on a murder in Iceland. Shocking that that country averages only 1.6 murders a year. https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/apr/12/the-murder-that-shook-iceland
Article on police cracking an armored truck robbery ring. https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/the-doting-father-who-robbed-armored-cars/
Good on a Mexican hit man that was arrested a few months ago. He claims to have killed about three dozen people in America it seems to all check out. https://www.buzzfeed.com/jessicagar...-contract-killer?utm_term=.mpKWbWwP#.wjA535BO
And an article from one of her "friends" that's mentioned in the article. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/04/my-misadventure-with-the-magician-of-manhattan
Great read for me. What a fucking psychopath, but inspirational. Pure con artist, I'd be shocked if she doesn't have shit cooking in jail. “Money, like, there’s an unlimited amount of capital in the world, you know?” Anna said to me at one point. “But there’s limited amounts of people who are talented.”
Shorter article on some Scottish children that were stowaways on a ship in the 1800s and forced to walk miles across ice to land in Canada. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/the_boys_on_the_ice
The profession of saturation divers... https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/what-is-a-saturation-diver?src=longreads
story on the recall of the judge who gave the stanford swimmer rapist the light sentence. think this may be thread worthy because i honestly see both sides of the argument on why he should or shouldnt be recalled https://highline.huffingtonpost.com/articles/en/brock-turner-michele-dauber/
Interesting read. My main takeaways were: 1) Judicial recalls are a really bad idea (regardless of how you feel about the case). 2) The contrast of such light sentences with huge mandatory sentences for non-violent, somewhat minor drug offenses is insane. 3) Colleges need to find better ways of dealing with these issues.

This is interesting. If he didn't make the actual letter he is prob fine. That PI sounds like a crazy person too.
Yeah not saying he didn't do it. Just saying if he only made mention of offers, not making a fake he prob gets away with it all.
Agreed. They would have talked to him first...since they wouldn't have had a contact at Minnesota and he would have played the "my psycho ex-wife" card.
Don't know what to make of this one.... https://theintercept.com/2018/09/09/wendell-lindsey-murder-drowning-forensic-science/
Whats giving you an issue? This seems very clearly not guilty to me and another huge fuckup by Texas.
I find it a little odd that a guy who had money issues, decided to put accidental life insurance policies on his two little kids and then 8 days later one has an accidental death.
I think its possible he did it, about 10% for me. But there was no way he should have been convicted.
That's nuts, they are such a mess. Anyhow, if you liked that, you will enjoy this as well. More than likely read it here first. http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/features/the-brutal-rise-of-el-mencho-w491405
Leaning toward he did it. rather not get into guilty vs not proven guilty because we don't have all the evidence. If I knew how deep the water was I'd definitely have my mind made up. One thing all these cases have in common is weird behavior/reactions following the incident. it's like impossible not to show signs that it was intentional or that you didn't want them to survive, although this guy didn't do too bad of a job. And yes, I'm just speculating.
This is a fucked up story.... https://www.vanityfair.com/style/20...hunt-for-justice-unsolved-mississippi-murders
I don't know why I didn't realize the Estes were white til the picture. I know its Mississippi but how has no one from the state taken over the entire police dept down there?
How is it even possible to shoot someone in the face and get almost no jail time? That guy committed an insane number of crimes with almost no consequences whatsoever
