him. The person to my 2 o clock on my flight was watching Walk the line the other day and I got into it and started watching it on mine
He’s such an incredible actor and just really feels like a perfect performer to deliver in the role of Joker. It really doesn’t matter what he does, I’m excited for it. The fact that he’s playing one of my favorite villains ever just adds immensely to my excitement.
He’ll do an excellent job with the role, but I’m afraid the plot of the movie is going to be shit - as will the general direction.
Snyder was a problem, WB’s execs are a bigger one. If they’re guiding the story choice, as good as Phoenix’s Joker is, the story is going to leave fans upset.
Idk man, this movie is the first under a separate film division for DC. Scorsecee is producing and it stars one of the best actors in the world. Phillips has some credible shit under his belt (as well as some trash) and is a huge comic book fan. I’m gonna stay excited for this. Being a comic book nerd myself and a film fan who just can’t get into what’s going on with Marvel, I’m keeping a close eye on this and hoping for a home run
There are essentially two things which define The Joker as a character: 1.) Anarchy and 2.) Batman. They are removing both those elements from this film. Reports are the Wayne’s (particularly Thomas) are old money wealth with connections to the mafia. It’s pretty obvious the plot will involve the Wayne’s and their big money corporate greed being responsible for the creation of an anti-hero Joker. WB is just trying to be edgy. They think they’re flipping the script, but, in reality, they’re taking away everything that makes Joker such a great villain. They’ll probably make Bruce a spoiled brat rich kid as the cherry on top.
I think that marvel/Disney nerds are gonna make a lot of assumptions about this film and ignore everything positive about it. I think I’ll just trust that it’s gotta dope foundation and roll with that. This may be the film that Phoenix decides to take a check and buck his trend of choosing quality projects, but I doubt it
Wonder Woman was good(I hold it higher regard than most of my fellow Marvel fans), but JL was a massive failure. Also, again, Phoenix is likely to play an excellent Joker...but if they do this: fans are going to be pissed.
Reading up on plot details the only things I can find set in stone is that Thomas Wayne is gonna be a part of the film, Joker is gonna be a failed stand up comedian with societal issues and that the story is gonna borrow from Shitty AMC Show Joke (excitement grows). I see no reason why grifter has made these assumptions Edit- lmao word filter
1. They said Thomas Wayne will be a “Donald Trump type shady businessman.” 2. You can’t do Shitty AMC Show Joke without Batman. He’s the foil Joker plays off the “one bad day” mantra. 3. I don’t see how it isn’t obvious they are setting this film up to be social commentary on big business stepping on the “little guy” and creating The Joker. Look, play that storyline in a vacuum, and it might fly with me. Trying to fit The Joker into it and it’s a square peg/round hole. It’s pretty much the antithesis of everything the character has been. Attaching “hero” to him in any way, shape, or form loses the largest pillar of what makes him such a great character. Just have it be a film where a nice guy is squashed by big business/the mafia and becomes something else to get revenge. Attaching The Joker character to it simply seems like a money/attention grab when you are departing so severely from the character.
Things that scare me: 1) Todd Phillips helming 2) The casting outside of Joaquin 3) Spiders but that's neither here nor there
These are assumptions. You aren’t getting any of this information from anywhere. “Borrowing” from Shitty AMC Show Joke is extremely plausible w/o Batman. You just use the hard luck character angle and his transformation and go from there. Gotham’s criminals created The Joker in Shitty AMC Show Joke, not Batman. I don’t see Phoenix signing on for a money grab but crazier things have happened. By all means though, pick it apart and ignore what it has going for it. Create the story out of the thin blue so it sucks before it gets off the ground for whatever reason. Sure, Batman and Joker are the ultimate hero/villain combo, they certainly feed off one another. That being said, Batman Begins was able to tell the origin story of Batman w/o The Joker, I’m confident we can see the origin of The Joker w/o Batman and still be impressed
The canon of The Joker is that his origin is unknown. His drive toward complete anarchy is magnified by not understanding his reason. This isn’t comics/novels though. If you put an origin story on screen, it lives as the origin of Joker for the remainder of DCAU. Comic fans understand canon and universes and shit, movie goers do not. Joker’s origin is not Jack, who killed the Wayne and it’s not Arthur, who fell on hard luck. Nolan’s Joker is the truest to form - an unknown madman who only finds Batman as a motive. And Shitty AMC Show joke’s widespread popularity is least based on his origin. It’s based largely around the current events and his interactions with Batman.
If movie goers don’t how do they accept multiple origins? Most won’t see this as the one true origin story. I think it will be cool to get an interpretation of an origin be it based on The.Killing Joke or not.
This film is a part of a separate universe than what is currently being used by DC. It’s not meant to compete with marvel and is meant to appeal more to comic book fans and film nerds. Jokers origin in Shitty AMC Show Joke is a huge piece of the puzzle in that novel and makes the book what it is. I mean, it completely what separates it from the standard fare in many ways (along with Allen Moore’s brilliant writing ofc). Have you ever read it? Im gonna end at this though. I will say that if you’re a fan of film AND comics you should really be hoping for the best here and try to keep biases at bay. If it ends up being spectacular and Marvel fans shun it for nerd reasons they may never attempt anything like it again. I’d have hated for that to have happened to Logan. Wonderful movie.
They accept multiple origins because the movies are spread far enough apart. That’s fine...unless you’re trying to build a giant universe like DCAU is failing miserably at right now. In that case, you need some level of continuity. And, personally, if you’re going to maintain that continuity, and this Joker is going to be the one to rival Batman in future films, I’d rather him not have an origin. I like my Joker as an unknown.
Jared Leto will be your unknown and will continue to be. This is a stand-alone film in a separate universe.
