I adore The Band, but it’s juvenile to pretend that their version of Atlantic City has the same soul as the Boss’s.
This is some Boo MFer! bullshit when he claimed that something called a Tiger Jaw had a better version of This Must Be the Place than the fucking Talking Heads.
Idk The Band’s version has a hell of a lot of soul...I agree that springsteen’s is the definitive version, but it’s a lot like Bonnie Raitt with Angel from Montgomery...still prefer Prine, but it’s hard to argue if someone prefers Raitt
I love their version but there’s an air of desperation in Springsteen’s that isn’t fully realized in The Band’s version.
As much as I love Thunder Road, his goat verse is: “But I remember us riding in my brothers car, her body tan and wet down at the reservoir. At night on them banks I’d lie awake and pull her close just to feel each breath she’d take. Now those memories come back to haunt me, they haunt me like a curse. Is the dream alive that don’t come true, or is it something worse.”
Adam raised a Cain made me queue up ‘Warren Zevon’...Springsteen always makes me think of a non bipolar version of WZ...which is a compliment to both
I’m going to see Dawes Sunday and they’re the only band that’s ever done Desperados Under the Eaves justice, which is of course goat Zevon. And now I’m listening to it.
I saw them do that on Letterman and appreciated that they did it with respect...can’t top Z on that and glad they didn’t try. I love Desperadoes but French Inhaler is the song of that album imo. Won’t argue against Mohammed’s Radio or Desperadoes though.
Hate shield activated. Bruce Springsteen fucking sucks. I have an irrational hatred for him. I saw him at a fest one time and it sucked. He acts all blue collar but he’s a fancy lad and his music sucks.
French Inhaler is great. Did you see the thread I made on the anniversary of Zevon’s death. There was a great article about his career.
Yeah i agree. It was terrible. We all decided to go to bonaroo like 8 years ago or something. It was miserable. 15 hour car drive and then we spent an entire day waiting in traffic to get in. My car overheated. Then once we finally got in it was like a damn land run and it suddenly started pouring rain when we were trying to set up our tents. Shortly later we got ripped off trying to get some drugs. Fuck fests. Never again.
Should also take a moment to acknowledge how fantastic and underrated the miniseries Show Me a Hero was
All my festival experiences have been amazing. But then again they have all been country music festivals.
Maybe I just had a bad experience but it sucked for the most part. I did see Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails and Snoop Dog so that was cool. The overall experience sucked though. They were cleaning out the porta potties right below us when we were waiting for Springsteen and the stench was unbearable. We were jacked up on MDMA and after one song I was like fuck this I’m out of here.
"For You" isn't my favorite Springsteen song, but it's probably in my top 10 and I rate it higher than most other people. This is just perfect: Crawl into my ambulance, your pulse is getting weak Reveal yourself all now to me girl while you've got the strength to speak Cause they're waiting for you at Bellevue with their oxygen masks But I could give it all to you now if only you could ask And don't call for your surgeon even he says it's too late It's not your lungs this time, it's your heart that holds your fate
Can’t recommend Springsteen on Broadway enough, it’ll be on Netflix in December. I’ll go to my grave never having seen a better show
We had a family friend that was a local cop and spent some time on his security detail after he moved to Rumson, NJ from LA and he's told us that at home he's no different than you or I. He drinks, he BBQ's, he yells at his kids when they act up. His son Sam worked with my younger brother as a firefighter for a few years. Yeah, the son of an exceptionally wealthy man working - and as a firefighter no less. Bruce & Patti once came into the BJ's Wholesale Club where my sister was working at in college and they literally shot the shit with her for 5 minutes over the weather to the best way to cook spareribs. When he's not on tour he's often hanging around the Jersey Shore music scene and almost always obliges when he's asked to come up on stage and jam for a few minutes. I like his music, I dont care for his politics or how he sometimes subjects the audience to them, but to call the guy "fancy" is just really, really uninformed. He's literally the polar opposite.
Fair enough. I don’t know the guy or anything I just had a bad experience the one time I saw him and don’t particularly like his music. I wasn’t trying to call out his character that was just the vibe I always got.
