Do it. Night cruising before/after storms is always the most productive. If you poke around social media enough, you can typically find some herpers near you who will show you around after they figure out you won’t broadcast spots, take/kill snakes, etc. I did some work with a group from PSU that were radio tagging all sorts of snakes in western PA, but mostly timber rattlers, northern copperheads, and eastern hognose. They were typically checking for SFD and whether it was spread through communal denning.

Well I went poking around our pond today. Saw a mocc but it's all so overgrown I never got a great look at it. Was curled up under some shrubs in about 4 inches of water. Wanted a picture, but I definitely wasn't going to fuck with enough to piss it off in the water. Rubber boots and a walking stick are no match on their turf ha. But it started to rain on me so I didn't get to poke around the levee where we've seen more of snakes of all kinds. Will have to try again another day.

Python drops from ceiling during a staff meeting at China bank

Video: Python falls through roof during staff meeting at China bank (ABC News)

A five-kilogram python has crashed through the ceiling at a bank in southern China's Nanning city, frightening staff during a meeting.

    Key points:
    • The python was non-venomous and no-one was injured
    • Local wildlife protection services were able to safely remove it
    • They said it was possible the python may have been reared by someone nearby

The 1.5-metre-long intruder unexpectedly entered the Xin Cheng branch of China's Industrial and Commercial Bank in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, before it dropped down between two employees.

Surveillance video footage showed staff fleeing in all directions as the python slithered across the floor.

It eventually took a rest under a couch, showing little interest in opening a new account.

The staff quickly called 110 — the equivalent of triple zero in Australia — and local public security officers and workers from a nearby wildlife protection station soon arrived at the scene.

[IMG] Photo: Local police and wildlife animal protectors captured the snake into a bag before it was transferred to wildlife animal protection centre. (Weibo: Nan Guo Zao Bao)

Professional tools were used to carefully capture the rogue reptile, which was then placed in a transparent bag.

The python is non-venomous, and it was handed over to the region's Wildlife Rescue Research and Epidemic Monitoring Centre for disposal, according to officers from the centre.

Animal protectors said it was possible the python may have been reared by someone nearby, and believed it was hunting for food when it fell into the bank's interior.

Remarkably, the same branch had been visited by another snake last year.

The Xin Cheng branch confirmed the incident, but declined to comment further.

I think you were relatively safe on both accounts. To me, snake looks non venomous, to me, and spider is almost assuredly a Wolf Spider, and while they are venomous, rarely bite. Unless you experience a severe allergic reaction, pain level and longevity of issue is very similar to a be sting.

Was not concerned about spiders, deal with wolf spiders all the time. They just add an extra level of cringe. Terrible pic of the snake but there is a copperhead boom right now due to all the rain.

I think i have told this story before, but it seems like the appropriate time to tell it again.

Growing up in Southern Georgia we had a Rattle Snack Round up every year in January. Well apparently, my father used to be a very advid snake wrangler. He would get them out of gopher holes, store them in 5 gallon buckets, then transfer them to a cage to keep until the round up. Young Pharm decided it was a good time learn the snake catching business at around 7 years old. My Dad and his hunting buddies are going along, using long plastic hose to poke around a gopher whole and listen for the rattle. THey would then gas the snake up, and catch it when it slithered out. Well i would wait a few gopher holes back as they cleared the path, my dad called me come up and i walked right over a previously "cleared" gopher hole. As soon as i stepped over the hole, a snake shot out of the whole and right between my legs. Luckily, it was just a harmless black racer. My Dad said sitting on the truck tool box, before he could get a word back to me. I then sat there the rest of the day and ate all the fried chicken they had brought. Never went back rattlesnake hunting.

My dad stopped hunting a long time ago, because it was hot and stupid he said. I still remember going over to a cage full of rattlesnakes like 50 of them. He still has trophies at his house from largest snake, most snakes caught, etc.

Gassing snakes and participating in round-ups/rodeos is as trashy/ignorant as it gets. Absolutely no reason for it.

    I agree,

My dad stopped gassing snakes, and then a few years he stopped all together. He grew up in a different time though, and that is how he was raised. He doesnt agree with the roundups etc anymore.

this was 23 years ago, and he stopped doing it about 20 years ago.
