    34. The Weimar Republic: The Crisis of Classic Modernity by Detlev J.K. A lot of information about the economic issues that at least partially led to the end of the Weimar Republic.

    35. The Road to Ann Arbor: Incredible Twists and Improbable Turns Along the Michigan Recruiting Trail by Tom VanHarren 4/10 Easy read that was mildly interesting if your a Michigan fan but irrelevant if not. Very basic stuff about recruiting and no conversations about cheating at all even with the stories from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

    36. Terrible Swift Sword: The Legacy of John Brown edited by Peggy A. Russo and Paul Finkelman 6/10 There were some very interesting essays in this book about the memory of John Brown but not a lot of new information and some boring essays about the history of John Brown as well.

Interesting that on a pretty literary list, Stephen King is tied for your highest rating. I read 11/22/63 and thought it was pretty entertaining but surprised to see it ranked above stuff like Atonement and Crime and Punishment. I like that you are giving true ratings though and not just trying to sound cunty

I read it and enjoyed it. It's hard for me to be unbiased bc Stephen King was my main thing in high school, and now I mostly read stuff that is more "literary" than that. So now when I think SK, I think of my younger high school self. Kinda hard to separate what is actually good from what I thought was badass at the time.

Not trying to start any cunt pissing contest in here -- just interested in conversation with other people who read a lot.

If there is a better spot for this please lmk. Just posted in the MLB thread, IMO you don't need to be a diehard baseball fan to enjoy this. Kind of a thinking outside the box exercise, where the box was designed to keep you in. Non fiction.

Astroball Ben Reiter. Really great book.

Premise for those who do not know.
When Sports Illustrated declared on the cover of a June 2014 issue that the Houston Astros would win the World Series in 2017, people thought Ben Reiter, the article’s author, was crazy. The Astros were the worst baseball team in half a century, but they were more than just bad. They were an embarrassment, a club that didn’t even appear to be trying to win. The cover story, combined with the specificity of Reiter’s claim, met instant and nearly universal derision. But three years later, the critics were proved improbably, astonishingly wrong. How had Reiter predicted it so accurately? And, more important, how had the Astros pulled off the impossible?

Astroball is the inside story of how a gang of outsiders went beyond the stats to find a new way to win—and not just in baseball. When new Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow and his top analyst, the former rocket scientist Sig Mejdal, arrived in Houston in 2011, they had already spent more than half a decade trying to understand how human instinct and expertise could be blended with hard numbers such as on-base percentage and strikeout rate to guide their decision-making. In Houston, they had free rein to remake the club. No longer would scouts, with all their subjective, hard-to-quantify opinions, be forced into opposition with the stats guys. Instead, Luhnow and Sig wanted to correct for the biases inherent in human observation, and then roll their scouts’ critical thoughts into their process. The numbers had value—but so did the gut.

The strategy paid off brilliantly, and surprisingly quickly. It pointed the Astros toward key draft picks like Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman; offered a path for developing George Springer, José Altuve, and Dallas Keuchel; and showed them how veterans like Carlos Beltrán and Justin Verlander represented the last piece in the puzzle of fielding a championship team.

Sitting at the nexus of sports, business, and innovation—and written with years of access to the team’s stars and executives—Astroball is the story of the next wave of thinking in baseball and beyond, at once a remarkable underdog story and a fascinating look at the cutting edge of evaluating and optimizing human potential.

Tough to rate this as my enjoyment of reading it was probably 3/10, but the wisdom I got from it was more like 10/10, so I'll go somewhere in the middle. I mainly picked up this book because I couldn't make it through in college, or again when I tried a few years later, and I wanted to finally "conquer" it and know what it said. As I neared the end and thought about what I was gonna rate it I was feeling very meh, but then I flipped back through and read just the passages I had underlined and had a different take. It's almost like the book is a string of great quotes strung together by descriptions and musings in between. Not sure why they give this book to college students, or especially to HS students -- the subjects covered are not the type of thing pondered much in youth.

    32. Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (Anthony Bourdain) - 7.5/10 -
Been a big Bourdain fan for some time but had never read any of his books. There's the typical Bourdan wit on display here and he's obviously a sharp guy. Loved learning about how he came up through the industry and worked his way up. He's also worked with some very interesting folks; Adam the bread guy stands out to me. That said, it got repetitive in some parts. He also devotes a lot of space talking about the culture of the kitchen everywhere he's worked (and intimates that his descriptions are normal in the industry) but then takes us to a kitchen completely unlike those environments. I wonder what this book would look like if he wrote it in, say, 2012 instead of 1999. Still, I enjoyed it and RIP.
    33. An American Marriage (Tayari Jones) - 8/10 - Wrote more on this one in the book club thread. Was not something I'd normally pick but glad that I got the chance to check it out. Jones is a talented writer and the format worked well for the story she was telling. I had a tough time empathizing with the characters but others on TMB didn't, so check it out.

Tangman Bourdain wrote another book in the late 2000s called Medium Raw. It's more about his life post becoming famous but it'd be an interesting comparison. I haven't read it yet but it's on the list.

    40. The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916 by Alistair Horne 8/10 Very good book on the Battle of Verdun, one of the most important battles of The Great War. Horne does a lot of analysis of military decision making that went into the Battle and covers the entire battle from beginning through the end of the war in the area of Verdun.

This book is based on a popular course at Stanford in their Design School (the so-called "d.school") that is filled to capacity every year and students have to do a special application just to get a spot. The professor turned the class into a book to be able to reach more people. It teaches you how to be more creative. The reason I don't have it rated higher is you can tell it began life that way -- it works as a book, but just doesn't seem to have quite enough material to be a book on its own. If you're looking for a summation of the major things known about creativity all in one place, it's pretty good for that. My big takeaway is there's no "magic" to being creative -- you fill your head up with knowledge and experiences, let your subconscious work on it (which you can assist with tricks from the book), and voila, creativity. I'm hoping my big album, book, or art project are right around the corner :cheesy:

They are fun, Quick reads. The lead character is retired SAS. He is an undercover cop who works a wide variety of cases. Each book has side stories involving his former SAS boss and squad mates. And there are also some MI5, espionage, and anti terror angles. You can see the evolution of the Dan Shepherd character and I’m hoping it goes in a certain direction.

    34. The Committee of Sleep: How Artists, Scientists, and Athletes Use Their Dreams for Creative Problem-Solving -- And How You Can Too -- Deirdre Barrett (7/10)
The title comes from a phrase by John Steinbeck...when you get stuck on a problem, let "the committee of sleep" work on it and often you'll have an answer in the morning. The book gives all kinds of examples of people who have dreamed of solutions to things and gives tips on how you can have problem-solving dreams. Very intriguing but at the moment I never remember my dreams so can't really apply this yet. I think I conk out too hardcore or something.

    35. Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Showbusiness -- Neil Postman (8/10)
This book came out in 1985 and was about how TV is changing politics, education and religion. Turns out it just became more and more relevant with the rise of computers/internet. The crux of the book is comparing George Orwell's vision of the future (1984) to Aldous Huxley's (Brave New World). In the author's opinion, Huxley's vision was the one proven right -- the masses aren't held in check by widespread surveillance and force, but by voluntarily vegging out on entertainment. One of the main things he shows is how a new technology doesn't just replace an old one and do the exact same thing -- it reorganizes society along new lines. The written word represented a huge change over oral traditions, printing did the same thing, and this new electronic age is doing it again.

No. Felt like the first chapter summed up the rest of the book. Also didn’t like how he accused the reader, multiple times, of being dumber than a chimp.

Originally read this in 12th grade. Wanted to reread because I started thinking about how it works perfectly as a metaphor for drug/alcohol abuse/addiction. Dude works up this potion, takes it and has a wild time acting uninhibited, wakes up the next day feeling hungover and regretful, eventually has to take more and more, starts having difficulty "changing back", etc. I'm not usually smart enough to do "literary reading" but thinking about it from that angle the whole time was fascinating to me. Well-written, quick read, and bonus it's about London -- I seem to love anything set there.

    37. The Red Badge of Courage -- Stephen Crane (8.5/10)
A lot of people read this in HS too but I never did. It's about the Civil War. What makes it so good is it's mostly focused on what the main character is thinking, not just the action of the battles. Pretty commonplace nowadays but kinda cutting edge in Crane's time. It's crazy that he wrote this book at 24 without ever being in a battle -- reads like something by someone twice his age who had seen many battles first hand. (He did have some military experience, but never fought in battle.) The main character is not very likable which is kinda different as well.

This came out in the 1960s and you can tell. While the authors avoided being racist for the most part, they certainly provided unabashed cheerleading for capitalism. (Not that I'm a communist -- just that some of the stuff they're passing off as truisms has proven to have a bit more nuance than their easy statements belie.) I think I already knew the "lessons" from history on offer in the book, though it was good to get more examples.

Ugh... I got lazy and didnt update in a while.

    An American Marriage -
Loved this book. It got an emotional response out of me, which is rare. I cant remember who nominated it, but thank you so much. Wouldnt have read it otherwise.

Rosewater - This book got a lot of buzz, but it was pretty boring. Interesting premise about an Alien dome in Nigeria and the people dont know much about it. It cause psychic abilities in some. And then all those people are starting to get murked. But it was a long slow story. Probably wont read the next book

Red Mars - Read it because I felt it was required reading for Sci-fi fans. It reminded me a lot of Seveneves. Cool but too long and too heavy on the science details. More about process than story. Meh.

Mitch Rapp Books - These are great. Kind of reminds me of a mix of Jack Bauer and Gabriel Allon. Good action, a bit cartoonish but a good series to burn through.

Past Tense - Good read. Not the best Reacher book, but enjoyed it.

An all-time classic obviously...my rating is based on my enjoyment of reading it. It wasn't bad, not hard to read or anything -- I just would have gotten more out of it if I knew more about the fine details of European history. He brings up so many examples of people from the ancient Greek/Roman days up to his present day of Florence, Venice, Pisa, all that shit. You can tell that some of the truisms you've heard repeated time and again (Alexander the Great prospered by keeping the language/culture in place in the places he conquered) originated here, or at least that's where some modern people are familiar with them from. I do like that I have some quotes I can drop now because Machiavelli quotes always sound sinister and badass: "You cannot avoid a war, only delay it to the advantage of your enemies."

    33. An American Marriage (Tayari Jones) - 8/10
    34. An Army At Dawn: The War In North Africa, 1942-1943 (Rick Atkinson) - 9/10 -
A pretty great military history from Atkinson. One of those rare history books that I feel would be equally attractive to both academic types and general readers. Atkinson is a very strong writer and has a wider vocabulary that I'm used to seeing in history books. We stepped on our dicks in North Africa a lot more than I remembered. I would definitely recommend reading this on a Kindle as you'll want to be able to easily access the battle maps. Highly recommend.
    35. Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About The World -- And Why Things Are Better Than You Think (Hans Rosling) - 7.5/10 - I'd rate this as an important read but it has its limitations. I learned a lot about the world around us and why the world is better off (by some metrics, anyway) than we are led to believe. That said, I agree with the previous poster that it does get pretty repetitive and could have been a bit shorter. Easy read, though, and I did really enjoy when he was able to share his personal experiences from the less-fortunate areas of our planet.
    36. The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust Of World War II (Iris Chang) - 8/10 - Another necessary work, IMO, especially if you're like me and knew little about Japanese atrocities in China in the '30s. Chang doesn't write with the rhetorical flourish of Atkinson but does a great job telling detailing this unfortunate time from the perspectives of the Japanese, Chinese, and the foreigners who risked their lives to help those in Nanking. I could've done with a bit more detail in some spots (especially around the politics of the time) but she does well in setting the stage for the Japanese invasion including a short rundown of the preceding 100 or so years in both countries. I didn't take this into account when grading the book but the 2011 version I read has an epilogue from the author's husband talking about her 2004 suicide and it was so personal in discussing her struggles with mental health that I was thrown for a loop. Just found it an odd inclusion.
