Somebody suggested this book on here a while ago. I started reading a couple of nights ago and am already very far in it.

    It is awesome.

Neyland, I suggested Hyperion way back in the day. I thought books 1-2 were some of the best sci fi I've ever read. The world building was top notch, GRRM-level. I loved how he used different writing perspectives (first person, third person, etc) to illustrate the characters better, it reminded me of James Joyce.

I like book 3, thought it was exciting, but frankly by the time I got to 4 it seemed like Simmons had lost the thread a bit. There were so many wholesale changes from what we had been told previously. Given the time between publications, it struck me almost as if he changed his mind on how the story should end. Curious to hear your view as you read.

All in all, the first two are must-read amazing books and I really enjoyed my time with the series.

yeah it's definitely different once you get to book 3. the first two were better but I've still been enjoying it like you said.

it's just not quite as good

Yeah, the last 20% or so was crap. Also, the time where they keep talking about all their friends in the Mountains Of Heaven was too much. None of those characters had any bearing on the series.

What did you think about the retcon changes? Different AI origins, different shrike origins? It was such a cop out to me, after such brilliance in the first 2.5 books.

Agreed. Just taking the easy way out. All the fucking names that helped build the palace drove me insane.

The Blackfish I saw you started reading this. Very interested to know what you think. It's been on my shelf for about two years now and I just haven't picked it up yet.

This book is absolutely bonkers. The anthropology of his world building is spot on. Just finished the priest's tale.

Has anyone read the short stories associated with this series? The Death of the Centaur, Remembering Siri, and Orphans of the Helix? Apparently Remembering Siri is basically what's already included in Hyperion, but I'm curious about whether the other two are worth a read (The Death of the Centaur takes place before Hyperion and Orphans of the Helix takes place after The Rise of Endymion).

I plan on starting back up with Endymion when I finish my current book.

I’m assuming that’s a no on the short stories.

    Started Endymion today.

20 pages in and we’ve already got a John Wick situation

Let me know what you think. It’s been a while but I remember there being a lot of over the top retcons that really turned me off, especially in the next book.

It’s like he took a break after 2, and then decided to rewrite major concepts for 3.
