So after doing this for a few months,I realized I was lathering wrong. My skin always felt super dry. Wasn't putting enough water in the later. Switched from face lathering to bowl and it made all the difference. Also got a scuttle and oh man, warm lather is just the best. Shaving went from a chore to an enjoyable experience. Im sure Im just excited about a new thing/hobby but now I see how one can go nuts and splurge on too much stuff.
Remembered I had the Wee Scot for travel and Ive been using it the past week. Little guys packs a punch.
Looking for razor reqs. My first razor was the adjustable Merkur clone form China. My second was a cheapo butterfly from Stirling Soap that I just threw in to my order because why not. I actually like the Stirling one, but it's pretty mild and I need a bajillion passes to get it where I want. The Futur clone - you need a weird angle to get it right which Im not really loving as much after using the other razor. Any recs for a more aggressive razor? I know the muhle open comb is the most aggressive, but a bit unsure I want to get that aggressive.
Vintage Gillettes: Slim or Fat Boy adjustable gives you lots of options. A vintage red tip is around a 6 or 7 setting and a blue tip is closer to a 3 or 4. A super speed is somewhere in the middle but every person is different. Techs are too mild for you based on what you’re saying.
Also - I was at Marshalls the other day and they had a Van der hagen badger brush, For 6 bucks I thought, why not? It smells HORRIBLE. It also has been shedding like crazy. I washed/soaked it in dish soap, loaded it w tabac soap and left in in a baggie for a couple days. Smell is still there just not as strong but pretty bad. I expected it to be crappy and lose a lot of hairs, but do all badger brushes smell strongly out of the box? My other two brushes are a Razorock synthetic and a Stirling boar hair. I love both those brushes. The boar hair didnt smell at all, which I was surprised.
I’ve had a little luck with white vinegar diluted further with water. Follow with dawn a few times then lather again. After that, it’s at least a good travel brush.
Second this. They're also cheap to pick up if you have the patience for antiquing. If you favor more modern adjustable, then you could look into the Ambassador from Rex Supply or the Model T from Rockwell
Does this thread have a good electric razor recommendation? I wet shave when I have time but with a toddler itsmhsrd in the mornings. So need to have the convenient option. Because of wet shaving I know I have hairs going in different directions so leaning towards rotary vs foil. Are the more expensive ones ($200 range) worth it over the $50 ones?
Id be curious as well. On days Im running late I don't shave at all assuming I don't have a client meeting. Id love to at least look half presentable.

Hello, I know this has probably been discussed a million times before, but straight edge or safety razor for lining up your beard? I am a novice and have never used either.
If you shave at all, like your neck under your beard, youre not going to want to do that w a straight edge. At least at first. There's quite the learning curve. Im still relatively new to wet shaving. When Im shaping up my beard or stubble and I try to do more than just line up the beard, I still always cut myself w the shavette, and if I dont, its nothing that resembles a close shave on the neck. I just shave w a saftey razor then clean/line up w a straight edge
Thanks for the heads up. I was getting it just to line up the neck line. I have a steep cut in my beard and it drives me insane when I fuck up the line.
hi covid means that I have to start shaving again so I can properly wear an N95 mask but the wetshaving sphere is a little overwhelming so i figured that I would ask for advice here I still have my boars hair brush and DE razor but no products. what should I buy, and how should I incorporate those products into my routine? i have pretty dry, sensitive skin I’d shave in the morning after my shower/face wash. don’t know if that matters but i figured that I would include it
You probably just need blades and a soap or cream. It can get much more complicated but an aftershave balm or anything else that might help with agitation could compromise seal on a respirator. Then again, that’s just propaganda they give us at work. The world of soaps has gotten huge and everyone has different skin allergies. I’ve personally found a tallow based soap is less drying than more vegetarian soaps. The main advancement I’ve made for sensitive skin is occasionally skipping a day. Not super scientific, I just know when it’s a day to skip or do one pass instead of two or three passes.
As someone who’s still relatively new to wet shaving ( a little over a year) I’ve always gotten better / easier lathers w synthetic brushes than boar. The soaps I’ve had the most success w are Stirling Soaps. Easy to lather and very slick. Also use cremo as a preshave lubricant I put on before I lather up. My favorite blades are persona blues. Sharp but not too sharp where in nicking myself all the time. After a lot of trial and error and blood, thats the best combo for me and what I’d recommend to beginners.
I think badger is superior to both which goes to show we can all get to the same place with different gear. That soap and those blades are top shelf recommendations.
I only have 1 badger and it’s a pretty cheap one, which is why I left it out. Seems like you have to spend a lot to get a good one.
found some feather blades and proraso pre-shave from the last time i shaved regularly and am picking up a couple unscented soaps from stirling, thanks guys

I'm close to the same. Lost my Edwin Jagger and I replaced with a Merkur and use Barrister and Mann, but still use a cheap brush and feather blades. Used a sample of after shave one time, but never since then.
I’m the opposite. I made the newbie mistake and jumped in and bought a lot of different razors, blades, soaps and brushes. I cycled through them all too often and it slowed progress getting the technique down. Forced myself to only use the German 37 which is a pretty mild slant. Now I almost exclusively use Parker 99r which is pretty aggressive. But now typing all this - makes me want to try the Merker Futur clone again. Was the first razor i bought. Figured it would be good because it was adjustable... nope

I need some soap recommendations. I was using Vostok by Queen Charlotte back in the day until they went out of business and then switches to Funky Chunks Soap. FCS has now stopped making due to their owner having surgery. any recommendations would be great as I’m stuck for the mean time using random bars of Dr Bronner from H‑E‑B.
I’m I’m being completely honest, shaving with a safety razor sucked ass. I use the same principles I learned in this thread with a Gillette 5 and my face thanks me for it.
There's a fellow wet shaver I work with. We'll occasionally talk about it. He said he recently started rising his razor in cold water and getting much soother shaves. Ive been doing it for the past couple weeks and holy moly it works really well. No matter how careful I am, I always get a little irritation on my neck. Same process. Hot water to warm the skin, hot lather ect. Just temper the razor in cold water to rinse. Pleasantly surprised.
Also - havent ordered anything in probably close to 2 years. What soaps are people liking these days. Probably will just load up on Sterling
Trying to get back into this and can’t find my brush. For some reason I thought they were a lot more expensive. What’s the recommendation for something I don’t have to worry about the god awful badger smell for a month? Is there a “broken in” option?
I only have 1 badger brush and he’s a crappy one. I have lots of boar brushes. I still get the best lathers from synthetic. So my suggestion is go synthetic
Went with a synthetic - Simpson Chubby 2 - which arrived today. No smell and great lather with no effort. My face hasn’t been this smooth in years!
Those are good fibers. I’ve got a Duke 3 synthetic as well - the smaller size lends itself well to traveling.
