DirecTV was turned off at Midnight last night. First morning with Nvidia Shield and YTTV. Was able to watch local news this morning and the ondemand for Mickey's Playhouse is great for the little one.

Man every article I read, cable companies are bleeding subscribers.

they wouldn't be if their prices were somewhat reasonable. you can't keep charging people $100 for just basic packages.

Depends on the usage. Is she fine with using a laptop or a mobile device as the remote? Will be entirely dependent on the app supporting a Chromecast as well, which is hit and miss. At least with a Roku or Fire Stick you know all the major apps and 99% of network apps will work with them.

I'm ready to dump fios. can you guys give a quick rundown on what you think best set up is? We watch a lot of sports, mostly college football/basketball/nfl. I'd like to still get local news, do those HD antennas work ok?

EDIT- I have an xbox one s, can that handle all the streaming stuff?

I have Fios internet still after cancelling Fios tv. I love the fiber internet. I went to YouTube tv and I couldn’t be happier.

re: streaming device I think Roku is the best period but perfect for kids by having a dedicated netflix button on their remote. Honestly kids, olds, anyone who struggles with technology the roku makes it so easy. Not only the dedicated remote buttons but can use your phone as a remote if you can't find it/don't feel like moving from your spot on the couch. Also, as long as the remote isn't dead it has a remote finder that plays a sound and the remotes sync to TVs now to power on/off and control volume. They are the GOAT streaming devices.

Roku is my preferred as well. Wish I could do stuff like Kodi on it though. Only reason why I'm keeping my Fire TV at this point.

    First use this tool.

    https://www.justwatch.com/

Then dependent upon your results, Check your xbone for app. If no app, roku unless you want to pirate on a fire device.

Edit: yes HD antennas work, there are tools online to show you what you can get at your location. Obviously going to be dependent on elevation, surrounding landscape, etc.....

Roku stick, YouTube TV... HD Antennas do work, can help if internet were to go down or to throw on an extra TV. Youtube TV has locals.

Yes your Xbox can handle all of the apps but you need cable logins or subscriptions to Netflix and whatever else.

I also see use for both a chromecast along with a Roku or Fire Stick. Sometimes you might have a friend over that is going to stream something. They are only like 30 bucks.

With Google Home/Google Assistant, the Chromecast connectivity cannot be beat ("OK Google watch XYZ"). I like Android TV, but the implementation on my Sony TV is not ideal, they seemingly put in poor processors, for multiple years in a row. Nvidia Shield is regarded at the best Android TV box. Also best app ecosystem.

With that said, Roku interface is simplest and seems like most people I interact with prefer this.

Apple TV 4k has the best processor which means its very quick/pretty as far as interface and going between apps. Single Sign On is also clutch. ATV4K also supports Dolby Vision and HDR which go along way to future proof that box. It's $180 which is no small amount compared to some of the Roku options being <$50.

The last integration I'm personally waiting on is for the Xbox One to support Google Assistant.

I come home and currently say "Hey Cortana, wake up" + "OK Google watch ESPN2"...Pretty soon will just be "OK Google watch ESPN2".

No remotes, no input changing, no apps, etc.

Nvidia Shield in the living room. Love it. Lets me watch Youtube TV, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Chromecast on every other tv. Updating the Chromecast in the bedroom bc its the original one and doesn't work the best with Youtube TV.

OTT services like YTTV are gonna rapidly expedite delivery of 4k, HDR and higher frame rates to the home. Everyone wins. By upgrading to the newest chromecast, you'll get 1080p60, when your old one couldn't do that.

LG and it does not. Alexa connects to Harmony, so any Alexa device will work. I could have a 20 year old tube TV and it would work as long as Harmony works with my TV.

For the record, Harmony also works with Google Assistant, but the process sucks dick compared to Alexa.

Recently switched to Comcast Xfinity and DirecTV Now via Roku.

Stupid Xfinity has a 1TB data cap, which is a problem in a house with multiple people and multiple TVs. We're blowing past 1024GB. Have heard that DTV consumes (much) more data than YouTube TV. Anyone experience this or know that this is true? In the meantime, we're running 720 instead of 1080 and 4k.

Also, DTV's interface absolutely sucks. Changing channels is a huge chore. Among other issues (like lagging, audio running behind at times, guide is slow to populate, etc.), it's really stupid that channels don't have numbers.

But again, the main issue is data usage. Paying an overage of $10 (max of $200) for every 50GB past 1TB ain't going to fly.

So, a couple months ago I decided to cut the cable. Figured Netflix, Prime video and PSVue or YT tv was updated do just fine. Well, I called Direct tv to cancel and they gave me the usual “please stay” bs. I told him, man, unless you can make it free, I’m canceling. Well, he came back and was like “alright hear me out. If you go to just one main box, no genies, and move to the lowest tier, and I apply this 12 mon. discount, your bill will be a $5 credit for 12 months. Sound good?”

    Deal

Now, the lowest tier of Direct is terrible, but it gives me my local channels. We haven’t needed to even get YTTVor PSVue. Any sports I need are streamed through the smart tv via things like r/soccerstreams or r/cfbstreams

Basically only paying for Netflix (and Prime video but I don’t even think about that since it’s just a benefit of Prime) and getting a $5 credit for basic Direct tv.

    Cut the fucking cord, people

So I joined a different streaming service, Vader. It works on my cell phone via data, but I get the same issues as MyStreams if it’s on WiFi. Neither work with Kodi right now.
