Have you seen newer phones, none of those can fit in a normal size pocket. One of the many reasons I refuse to get a new one. You fuckers want to watch tv on the goddamn thing.

Not since the 90's. I use something called AIMP, ran through a Yamaha receiver to my Definitive Technology speakers. Oh, and an extra 12" Yamaha sub.

I've always had issues getting into Sabbath and Priest. Maiden isn't exactly high on my list either. Coming into the metal scene in 1984 I missed the boat on those, 9 year old me was much more infatuated with Sister & Crue.

Sabbath was never an issue for me. Their music is timeless, or at least the riffs are.

There are some people who say that in order for a band to be "metal," you have to be able to trace a direct line from Sabbath to them. I cant say I disagree really, but I haven't put it to the test all that much

As for Priest, something like Sad Wings of Destiny holds up because it's a great album, but beyond that it's more about listening for their influence. For as much as it's not cool to like Metallica or whatever, their first 3/4 albums still rip today

Maiden was never a band that I could get into but I respect. I've been listening to them more lately because I like those big guitar harmonies

my thing with Maiden always was (and is): I don't care about the vocals. They're good and nice, but it's the big dual guitar leads

I'm not sure if this will make it better, but apparently the writing went this way: Tony Iommi wrote the riffs, Ozzy wrote the melodies, Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics

Rumor is new Mgla is coming out next year.

    M. and Darkside are also in Kriegsmachine, who just put out a rather excellent record a month or so back. Think they wanted to finish that and are now working on Mgla material.

Yeah, for example, there are some bands with records that I will always go back and listen to now and again, but the band lost me later in their catalog.

Opeth is the most obvious example. Despite my love for the first 5-6 albums, are they really still in my top five? Isis is one of my favorites historically, but they aren’t a band anymore. Still in the top five? I know you can make the same argument for Bolt Thrower but they just get more spins. Not an exact science.

With the exception of Bolt Thrower and Drudkh, I’ve really dug into those bands in my list recently (during the last 5ish years), and they still put out albums that interest me.

Zero chance of me making a useful Top 5

    Most influential for me: Metallica

My favorite (going on 10 years): Opeth

Bands inbetween that have heavily influenced my interests and listening habits: At the Gates, Death, Children of Bodom, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Darkthrone, Black Sabbath, Vektor/Black Fast, Arcturus, Revocation, Pallbearer/Khemmis, Gojira.

I envy a little bit the people who can legit make a top 5 like that... :idk: my taste is just more "mainstream," to the extent that "mainstream" exists when we're talking about black metal, etc

I like that way of thinking about it. There are definitely acts that laid the foundation for the kind of music I listen to now (Metallica, Opeth, In Flames, At The Gates, Emperor, Hatebreed, Isis, Nile, Carcass).

Then, as time has elapsed, those bands have been replaced with other acts that I’ve gone through heavy listening “phases” with.
