There's a story on Rivals saying he's shutting it down and signing with FSU. They haven't exactly been upfront with media though so who knows if true.
had dinner with a buddy on friday night and his gf is from monroe. her little brother is very close with sam at sun valley and he swears unc doesnt have a prayer and he's fsu all the way #insidersources
good lord that moved fast, obviously Kliff and Gene would be a home run staff, trying to temper my expectations there though
very excited about the staff he puts together. the hand-wringing over how bad of an idea this hire is seems to be ridiculously overblown. word doc this: mack will be a very good hire
I understand the Texas pov, but I also can't imagine the guy getting back into the grind if he didn't have a rejuvenated hunger to do so, staff makes or breaks it.
the ability to announce this hire so quickly is a big reason for it too. we need to get a good recruiter in place IMMEDIATELY to possibly save this class before signing day.
Bryant's still considering us, his trainer says, I'm actually more interested in him coming in now since everybody will be working with a new playbook anyway
there's a thread on ic that looks to be getting updated slowly with new names Spoiler The following coaches have been shared behind the scenes as candidates in play for Mack Brown’s staff. While speculation abounds, our intent is provide only those assistant coaches who we have confirmed are under serious consideration. Inside Carolina will be updating this potential staff list in the days/week to come as more names enter the pool. Names are listed in alphabetical order. Jay Bateman Current role: Army Defensive Coordinator Potential UNC role: Defensive Coordinator On Sept. 22, Army nearly pulled off an improbable upset of high-octane Oklahoma in Norman before falling, 28-21, in overtime. The Sooners scored touchdowns on their first three possessions before the Knights held Lincoln Riley’s offense scoreless over the final 34:25 of regulation. The man credited with slowing down the Sooners despite overmatched personnel was defensive coordinator Jay Bateman. A year after finishing third nationally in red zone defense, Bateman’s defense ranks third nationally in third down defense and 16th in scoring defense. The 41-year-old is an up-and-comer with a reputation for a cutting edge approach to defensive scheme. Bateman has North Carolina ties as well – he served as Elon’s defensive coordinator from 2006-2010. He was announced as a finalist for the Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant, on Monday. Tim Brewster Current role: Texas A&M Tight Ends Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Potential UNC role: Assistant Coach Brewster got his start as an assistant coach under Mack Brown at UNC, where he coached tight ends and special teams from 1989-1997. The Phillipsburg, N.J. native followed Brown to Texas for four years before trying his hand at the NFL ranks with the San Diego Chargers in 2002. Brewster took the Minnesota Golden Gophers head coaching job in 2007 and was let go after posting a 15-30 record in four seasons. Brewster, known for being a tireless recruiter, worked under Jimbo Fisher at Florida State from 2013-2017 and followed Fisher to College Station for the 2018 season. Gene Chizik Current role: TV Analyst Potential UNC role: Defensive Coordinator What’s old is new again. Gene Chizik earned a reputation as one of the nation’s top defensive minds during coordinator stints at Auburn (2002-04) and Texas (2005-06) and played a significant role in UNC’s run to the ACC Championship Game in 2015. Chizik resigned in February 2017 to spend more time with his family. His daughters are in college and his son is a senior in high school. He has expressed an interest to return to coaching following his son’s high school graduation. He was Mack Brown’s defensive coordinator during Texas’s 2005 national championship season and he won another one as Auburn’s head coach in 2010. Patrick Suddes Current role: Auburn Assistant AD for Football Potential UNC role: Director of Player Personnel Background: Suddes served as Alabama’s associate director for football operations from 2007-12 before joining Mack Brown’s staff at Texas as director of player personnel in 2013. He left Austin to become Arizona State’s assistant AD for recruiting in 2014 before joining Gus Malzahn’s staff at Auburn as director of player personnel in 2016. He was promoted to assistant AD for football in June 2017. Suddes began his career as a recruiting intern at LSU under Saban in 2004 and followed his head coach to the Miami Dolphins NFL organization for a stint in 2005-06. Tommy Thigpen Current role: UNC Safeties Coach Potential UNC role: Assistant Coach Tommy Thigpen, who was a three-time All-ACC linebacker at UNC under Mack Brown, will have his first opportunity to work under his former head coach. The 47-year-old began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Carl Torbush before coaching linebackers under John Bunting and Butch Davis. Add in his addition to Larry Fedora’s staff in January and he very well could become the first UNC staff member to work under five different head coaches. Thigpen also five spent five seasons at Tennessee, where he was named the 2013 National Recruiter of the Year by Rivals.com, after helping Gene Chizik lead Auburn to the 2010 national championship.
from what i've read it seems like gene and bubba have had an ongoing relationship since he left so it would be awesome if he could come back for a couple years. really interested to see what we do at oc because i can't imagine mack is bringing much to the offensive scheme these days. love the mack hire though.
Question on the ACC/B1G challenge. Is it just me or does UNC always end up with a tougher game than duke even though duke is ranked higher preseason? It seems like duke always plays an unranked team in this challenge while UNC always gets a much higher caliber opponent.
Mack Brown might work out but I think you guys missed a serious opportunity. Why not roll the dice on Satterfield? A young up and coming coach, has spent his entire life in NC, by all indications would have LOVED to coach UNC. You get that one right and you have your guy for 20+ years. What were they scared of? Losing football support lol
satterfield was my first choice for sure but the hand-wringing over mack has gotten so ridiculous that i am all in on it now just out of spite
I’m reserving judgment on Mack until I see the coordinators he hires but I’m pretty (extremely) underwhelmed right now.
