We give a bonus. It's not an extra month of salary though. Also do a christmas party at a nice restaurant that is pretty expensive.
got offered the city courts public defender job. I do no criminal defense but it is $1,000 a month and they are saying it might raise to $1500 a month. It's like 4:30-7:30 every Wed night. If I was richer I probably wouldn't do it but couldn't turn down the cash.
Already pay $1,000 to findlaw for SEO/website plus god knows how much for their directory shit and we ask them yesterday why we are getting basically no online leads for MVAs and they tell us because we aren't subscribing to their social media and other packages. I bet we are paying these people like $3k+ a month. No end in site to this bs.
Starting in January I’m going to be paying 7k a month for SEO and pay per click. Committed to 6 months Really hope I’m not flushing 40k+ down the shitter
I sent bacon and sausagw sampler packs from kiolbassa to like 75 people last year and it was a pretty big hit https://kiolbassa.com/product/shop-sausage-bacon-sampler/
I have no idea what my firm does for their offices admins. I was considering doing a little extra for my own assistant and paralegal and was seeking ideas above and beyond what they get from the firm.
I gave my associate $1,000 and admins $500 in cash the Wednesday before thanksgiving for Black Friday My associate and her husband like to go to top golf and I’ve given her $200 gift cards a few times this year
PPC is such a crap shoot. Even with modern analytics you really can't tell whether you are getting cases from it. Between all our online stuff I think we're paying around 7k a month as well. It isn't really doing that well either. Word of mouth and referrals from other attorneys been outperforming it lately.
they have different dockets. so they had review hearing dockets, speeding ticket dockets, and a few other dockets. they have a trial docket near the end and a prelim docket near the end. it all starts at 4:30. So you really get there and meet with the court staff get the affidavits and paperwork for the prelims review it talk to the detectives see how much you can get bond down if you waive prelim, talk to the judge see if they need you to cover any misdemeanor stuff or if they need anything. grab ass and sit around a bunch from what i can tell.
sounds fun, def worth it. Kind of amazing how different criminal court is State by State or even county by county. You would think the basic format (due process procedure) would all be identical.
If an insurance company denies liability on a UM claim at first but then makes an offer later after an attorney calls them out on it and threatens to sue them, does that mitigate or eliminate the bad faith? I'm guessing no.
Have any of y’all spent money on radio advertising? Considering buying an expensive URL and phone number and spending 30-40k a month
yah I did it for a while. Did nowhere close that that volume but generally wasn't that impressed with it. I think it's basically branding and not anything that makes people directly call you.
Think I will get more bang for buck on radio now Could probably saturate morning show on a decent sized station for that
I think that is a big mistake. Most of the big advertisers have said that TV is what makes the phone ring. Billboards and radio are just about branding. We put up 4 billboards at my old firm and it didn't make a big difference either. I think with billboards you have to saturate the market.
Have heard billboards don’t work unless you’re already doing other advertising I think if tou spend 500-1000 on anything it probably won’t work. Takes more $$ than that If I spend 30k a month on radio and get 4 cases it pays for itself
OK, I'm a fucking idiot but I need some advice. I got scammed on some concert tickets yesterday. I know buying off craiglist is a risk, and that I shouldn't have paid through Venmo and that the money is gone at this point. Basically I paid the dude and he never emailed me the tickets like he said he would. Is there anyway to do anything to scare or inconvenience this guy? Venmo basically told me to get lost. I was hoping they could verify if there had been other complaints about the individual and at the very least they could suspend his venmo account. I can tell he has done this to 3 other people this week. The guy has his facebook connected so I was able to find him there, know about where he lives (different state than me) Can I file a police report? I know that the money ($350) is gone. Just pissed and don't want to lay down if I have any reasonable recourse.
I’m just some idiot but I would call the police in his location and file a report. You could also file a small claims action against him but that would probably be more of a hassle than it’s worth. If all else fails you can fuck with his life and/or send him a bucket of shit from shitsenders.com
And one of my admins put in her notice last night. Guess that’s one extra fruitcake for the McKigney household!
Nope and agreed. And she had already requested and was granted paid leave for the entire week of Christmas. Her last day is going to be 12/21. Pretty honorable of her, I guess, but also kind of screwing herself.
Exactly. And there is no way the job she is taking pays her what my firm does or provides better benefits. Really curious decision on her part.
was referred a comp /3rd party case last friday had to go to hospital and sign her up. pedestrian that got ran over on the job. compound fracture of left leg, tibia and fibia fracture right leg, thoracic fracture. one of the bigger cases in the last few months for me.
at the last minute the city decided to have our countys public defender office do the city public defender gig from here on out. i had been up at the court and introduced to everyone as the next public defender. kinda sucked. kinda doesnt suck because i dont have to be up there every wed night for 4 hours.
have a pretty interesting case where a tractor trailer was disabled on the shoulder of highway and called a roadside assistance company to help it. said assistance parked in the right lane of a state highway at night to get up next to the TT. My client crashed into the roadside assistance F250. The police report completely left the TT company off the police report and had the wrong phone number for the TT driver. Finally tracked all them down (driver and trucking company) today and filed motion to sub them in for john does and amend complaint. There is some scary law on that. There are cases in MS where the court found plaintiff lawyer didn't act with due diligence in hunting down the unknown defendants and thus wouldn't allow the sub/amendment and the statute ran. Hoping that doesn't happen to me here.
I'm still in a phase where making 12k more a year makes a difference. I could use another $1000 a month. But I'm happy to focus on my practice/firm and just get richer doing that instead of spending time doing criminal law which i dont even practice.
There was a trial in our building this week where the defendant pistol whipped a cop, then pointed his gun at the cop before the officers partner shot the defendant in the leg. The Judge presiding over the case had a sign that said "Stay Woke" on the door to his courtroom, wore a Black Lives Matter pin during the trial, and pulled this photo off his wall and held it while he read the jury instructions to the jury. I swear we deal with more crazy shit in Wayne County than anywhere else.
Did you know the judge who is the subject of the other thread? The one who sentenced the woman to 93 days in the county jail for laughing during a sentencing?
Yes, have had cases in front of her and she used to work in our office. Sadly she probably isn't even one of the worst judges in our building
Do those fall under negligent entrustment? Guess "it depends." It's been a breath of fresh air in WA and OR that once agency is admitted, all negligent entrustment claims are improper---like 49 other states EXCEPT Alabama. MS dismisses those claims on an admission of agency, correct?
