I've done one other safari, in Pilanesburg South Africa, and it was great. That said, nothing compares to the Serengeti. That shit was dope -- saw so many animals and our guide was excellent -- he knew the park seemingly better than the other drivers as some of our best viewings happened when no other safari jeeps were anywhere around. He also had no problem going off road to get super close to the animals.

Couple of the pics I took:
    LionsSerengeti.jpg
    LeopardSerengeti.jpg
    LionsDrinkingSerengeti.jpg
    GiraffeSerengeti.jpg

ETA: We used Simba Adventures. We did 3 nights, and visited Tarangire, the Serengeti, and Ngorrogorro Crater. We literally camped with animals just outside our tent. In the Serengeti that shit was in tents (zinnng), as I heard what I thought sounded like a lion just outside my tent as well as hyenas raiding our campsite all night. At Ngorrogorro we camped on the ridge, and when I went out to use the restroom in the middle of the night zebras were sleeping just outside the tents and then an elephant was eating in the tree just outside the camping bathroom building. It was pretty surreal.

How do those animals react when you get that close? Being a national park, do they sort of get used to the jeeps and people?

Looked at us. Decided we weren’t a threat and then walked around or went back to resting. The only time I got a little uneasy (while in the Jeep) was when a big male elephant started walking right at us. Got so close I could touch him. It was unsettling because he could have easily flipped the Jeep if he thought us a threat.

Heading to Jambiani today, which is a beach on the island of Zanzibar. We were planning on leaving from Stone Town, and flying to Lamu, Kenya but that proved impossible without losing one of the last 3 days.

Heading to The Rock Zanzibar tomorrow for dinner. Also planning on giving kite surfing a try, and I really want to try and catch a bone fish

This is the place we picked for Jambiani.

based on all my research south african safaris are dumb expensive even if you do it the budget way, its just expensive to get there to start and most places aren't cheap

going to do one in a year or two

Yea thats the conclusion I’ve come to as well. Seems like I’d be spending 7–10k in Africa at least including flights.

Where as South America I feel like it’s easier to move around a little bit and I can visit more places for 3-5k

Flight from Atlanta to Nairobi was like $660 (on Delta with a layover in Amsterdam. Found this deal on secretflying.com). After that it’s abt as expensive as you make it. It’s not excessively cheap, but still cheaper than the US. Comparably, Brazil is way more expensive, but Bolivia probably cheaper, and it’s probably about the same as Peru. The bungalow I’m in on the beach right now is something like $60 per night, and the giant beers they sell you are like $3.

Safari’s ain’t cheap. We did 3 nights and it was pretty expensive — I think it was just under $1000 per person after tip and all taxes. That included entry to parks, meals, and pretty much everything else. In hindsight, I’d 100% do it again, and thought it was very much worth it.

I was more thinking activities I’d want to do in Africa would be more expensive not really living costs. But 1000 for 3 nights is cheaper than I thought.

What beach did you head to? Who did you do your safari through?

In at Blue Reef lodge on Jambiani in Zanzibar. It’s amazing so far. We hung out with some South Africans and Polish vacationers during sunset last night. This place has kind of a hostel atmosphere in the sense that it’s easy to meet people.

We used Simba Adventures. They are amazing. Highly recommend. https://simbaadventures.com/

It’s also worth noting that we took the bus from Nairobi to Arusha for $30 per person, and then the Tanzania visa is $100 for US Citizens ($50 for all other countries — that really grinded my gears).

Traveling gents, is the chase sapphire still considered among the best cards for accruing travel rewards do I need to check the credit thread/look at others?

I was thinking of taking a trip something between Christmas and NYE, or including, and figured it may be good to apply for another card.
