Looking at AA's comment yesterday I've resigned myself to the braves signing Kakes to a 2 year deal :twocents:

Cause we still need pitching. Both rotation and bullpen and that's gonna cost 10-15 million at the minimum. Unless some Madbum or Kluber trade falls out of the sky

We almost have to make a trade. We have too many guys. It's to the point where we can't develop them all.

    Folty
    Gausman

    Newk
    Soroka
    Touki
    Fried
    Wright
    Gohara
    Wilson

    Anderson
    Muller
    Wentz

I'm probably leaving someone out. But we don't have room for all of these guys. Even if you guys like a fried and Gohara end up in the pen. We have to trade a few of them.

Not to mention we need to move JT

Anderson, Muller, and Wentz are no where near ready and will start in AA, with gohara's lost year I could see them taking the pressure off and starting him there as well. Plus still 5-6 spots at AAA

Whatever I’m doing, I’m keeping Gohara, if for nothing more than to not trade him at his lowest value. I still think he and Ian have the highest ceilings.

Anderson is widely considered to be ready next year. He may start at AA but they are thinking he helps in September. But still, that's why those guys were listed in a separate tier.

Keeping guys in AAA may be an option for a while but eventually they need spots in the big league rotation.

Trading JT will give us some salary wiggle room. Somewhere with a big park like Seattle or San Fran would be perfect. They also happen to have Madbum and Haniger.

Fangraphs projects Markakis as .270 hitter with a high obp, 12 home runs and terrible defense. Gross. Playing Camargo in left is a better option. Kipnis would also be better than that.

I still think we trade two guys from our current rotation to free up spots or money. Can’t see anyway Teheran makes us a better team. Even if we’re eating 2/3 of his contract. That has value to a rebuilding team to eat innings.

Can we refrain from not posting/talking about DOB information? He’s proven that, somehow, in his decades of covering this great sport, that he doesn’t know anything, has no connected sources, and doesn’t understand how our front office works or plans to construct our roster.

I'd like to see Newk get another year and if can build off the positives of 2018.

Bur if he's part of a deal that gets a proven starter that we can have for a number of years, so be it.

Eventually, the Braves might figure out a solution to those trade-market woes. Anthopoulos himself said they’ve been more active on that side rather than free agency; that was before the Donaldson and McCann deals, which the team prioritized not only to quickly fill needs, but to know what resources remained.

They could wait until January, when free-agent prices dip for some players, to address their declared deficiencies. They’ve remained in contact with Nick Markakis, who went to his first All-Star game and won a gold glove and silver slugger last season.

But his play down the stretch was concerning, and it’s fair to wonder if that’s a sign of what’s to come. It’d be logical for the team to go younger there, but it’s not as though their options are plentiful if they’re trying to get value.

Michael Brantley is said to be seeking a similar deal to Carlos Santana (three years, $60 million). He might get it, but it won’t be from the Braves. A.J. Pollock will likely coax a four-or-five-year contract from somebody, and his value isn’t as high in this situation because the Braves have center field covered.

They’ll settle for a player they like on a shorter deal – such as Markakis or Andrew McCutchen – before heaving dollars beyond their comfort zone. That is, if they can’t acquire an outfielder via trade, which seems to be the preferred route at this time.

“I would just say we’re staying in contact (with Markakis),” Anthopoulos said. “But we’re not close to anything with any outfielders at all.”

The sum of their fruitless efforts likely presents doubt they’ll make a significant move - it shouldn’t. They revved up talks with Donaldson on Thanksgiving day. There are numerous players who’ve expressed desire to play in Atlanta, including Carlos Gonzalez, whose signing could make for an all-Venezuelan outfield.

At the trade deadline, the Kevin Gausman move came together just before the buzzer. Developments are swift with the Braves. What’s not close now could be agreed upon in days.

In other words, the franchise’s allure and wealth of assets should eventually prevail. They expect to deepen their outfield, reliever and bench depth – but they won’t do it spending foolishly. The Braves cannot afford dead money as a mid-market team.

So a lucrative contract for closer Craig Kimbrel and the like is completely off the table. That isn’t being cheap, as many will proclaim. It’s trying to net the best value, both in terms of dollars, years and in some cases prospects.

“We’re certainly going to make every effort to add, but we’re not close to anyone in the bullpen right now,” Anthopoulos said. “We’re having more conversations with starters than we are the bullpen. Outfield, unless the market just doesn’t emerge as we think, I’ll expect by the time spring training rolls around, we’ll have added an outfielder one way or another. I’d be surprised if we didn’t.”

I think this is a bad take. Sorry if it seems like i’m picking on you.

I agree endurance was an issue, but it’s an issue as a result of a bigger issue which is he doesn’t appear to have elite control or a 100 mph fastball like Folty to fall back on. This causes him to nibble around the strike zone too much and throw too many pitches. His outlook is much less optimistic than Folty.

New has an upper 90s fastball when he chooses to use it. He took something off of it last year in hopes of controlling it.

I'd love to deal Newk for some bullpen help if he has any value. I have a hard time believing his control will ever actually come around.

Maybe I'm overly pessimistic about him, but I'd absolutely prefer the younger guys over him in the rotation.

Bauer/Kluber, Folty, Gaus, Soroka, Touki? Any chance they shoot for multiple starters via trade?

    Soooo this is interesting..

    Club needs
Anthopoulos has actively pursued outfielders capable of adding some more pop to a lineup that already includes Ronald Acuna Jr., Freddie Freeman and Donaldson. Michael Brantley is a potential multiyear option. Andrew McCutchen, Nick Markakis and Carlos Gonzalez are potential short-term options. The trade market may eventually create an opportunity to gain another short-term target like Yasiel Puig.

Once Diaz went to the Mets, the Braves began facing the fact they may not find a legit closer, but they continue to seek late-inning options. It appears their need for a front-line starter will most likely be satisfied via trade. Marcus Stroman is an option if the Blue Jays eventually opt to deal him. Sonny Gray has also been discussed. But for now, Madison Bumgarner does not appear to be a primary option.

    Watch on MLB.com

    Whom might they trade?
Beyond their talent-rich prospect pool, the Braves have a few big league pieces that could be moved. Acuna's capability to play center field at least allows Atlanta to listen if teams are willing to provide a front-line starter in a deal that would include three-time Gold Glove Award winner Ender Inciarte. As with Inciarte, the Braves aren't actively trying to move Dansby Swanson or Ozzie Albies. But Johan Camargo's presence at least creates the option for them to be moved if necessary.

    Prospects to know
Many teams have expressed interest in Kyle Wright, who has the highest upside of the seven Braves pitchers who are listed among MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects. Mike Soroka's right shoulder and Luiz Gohara's forgettable 2018 season have altered their respective trade values, and Touki Toussaint's walk rate concerns potential suitors. But with Wright, Ian Anderson and Bryse Wilson, Atlanta has the prospect pieces needed to potentially deal from an area of strength.

    Watch on MLB.com

    Rule 5 Draft
The Braves will likely make a move on their 40-man roster to allow for the chance to be players during Thursday's Rule 5 Draft. Infielder Ray-Patrick Didder and right-hander Josh Graham are Atlanta prospects who can potentially be lost during the Major League phase of the Draft.

    Payroll summary
Braves chairman Terry McGuirk has said the club has the financial resources necessary to make at least one more significant investment this offseason. Team officials have said the payroll has increased. Specific figures have not been revealed, but it's believed Anthopoulos still has at least $30 million left to spend.
