False. I only read forums like I have since the 90's. I went to BM to see if there was more information on the CC members arrest from the other day. And what's his name, Tobias? I would smash him at pinball.

There aren't many good ones left. Metal-Rules was good in the 90's, I probably haven't been back there since the 90's. MA is a popular one. Braveboard just shut down a couple weeks ago, now back up on a different server and ran independently, they still appear to be working out bugs. There's the NWN! forum and apparently it's large but I've never cared for all the nazi nonsense they seem to attract.

honestly i shied away because the album was called Where Owls Know My Name

That's an absurd album name even for me

fwiw 1914's album was Angry Metal Guy's album of the month

people in the comments had strong takes that Chapel of Disease should have gotten it, and I can't say I disagree because that's a great album. the 1914 album was good as fuck too, though

It's in my top 5 for the year. Technical death metal with tons of interesting progressive moments, and the vocalist has some Scott Kelly from Neurosis vibes (a good thing). Despite all the technical brilliance, they know how to write good songs too (see: 'A Home').

    new Sulphur Aeon is amazing.

if early 2000s-era Nile wrote progressivey songs exclusively about Cthulhu, and had the songwriting chops of Bloodbath, with just the right amount of black metal riffing sprinkled here and there.

I’d rank this album tops for them:

    1. Scythe Of Cosmic Chaos
    2. Beneath the Ocean Tide
    3. Gateway To The Anti-Sphere

I think these guys, Slugdge, and Rivers Of Nihil are the best things going in death metal right now. Fight me if you disagree.

Brian May Teases New Solo Single...to Be Released From NASA Mission Control
    By Andrew Magnotta

    December 19, 2018

Queen guitarist Brian May plans to release his first solo song in 20 years in a historic fashion.

May, who also holds a doctorate in astrophysics, will release his new song, "New Horizons," from the NASA mission control center in Greenbelt, Maryland, on New Year's Day 2019.

The song is apparently named for NASA's New Horizons probe, which is expected to reach the edge of our solar system on January 1, 2019, approximately 13 years after it was launched.

You can hear a teaser for the new track above!

Due to how busy May has been with his research, he's mostly ruled out making new music with Queen. But it seems the "New Horizons" project has reinvigorated him creatively from multiple angles.

"This project has energized me in a new way," May said through a statement. "For me, it's been an exciting challenge to bring two sides of my life together — astronomy and music. It was Alan Stern, the Project Instigator of this amazing NASA mission, who threw down the glove last May. He asked if I could come up with a theme for Ultima Thule which could be played as the probe reached this new destination."

The New Horizons probe is traveling farther than any man-made object ever has. May says it's an inspiring historic moment of which he's proud to be a part.

"To me, it epitomizes the human spirit's unceasing desire to understand the universe we inhabit," he said. "Everyone who has devoted so much energy to this mission since its launch in January 2006 will be feeling they are actually inside that small but intrepid vehicle — only about the size of a grand piano — as it pulls off another spectacular close encounter."

May's last solo release was 1998's Another World album.

I only listened to a couple hundred new albums this year, I usually do two and sometimes three times that. I got hung up on my 80's revisit and couldn't get out of that mode for a months. Nonetheless, I don't feel like I missed much this year. Next year I'll probably repeat the same process, spend more time with the old stuff. The scene feels so watered down with garbage as it's too easy for bands to put an album out. Now part of that is my fault for thinking I have to listen to every single unsigned/independent release, but some of this shit is so incredibly bad.

Agree with this. Too many bands have figured out how to put window dressing on unoriginal and uninspired content. The internet allows everyone to get exposure and push junk up the ladder.

Sometimes it feels like it takes me forever to wade through the average to find something great.

I find it suspicious that Gorement's only full length album, "The Ending Quest" from 1994 has a total of 6 reviews on Archives and every one of them is 100%. Can't help but feel like one of the review approval gatekeepers has some sort of obsession with them. The album is a 75% - 80%, all 6 reviews at 100% is nonsense. I find other unheralded 'classics' to be better, like Hazael's "Thor" for example, which only boasts of a 90% and two reviews. Maybe if I get bored I'll do a review of the Gorement and see if it gets posted.
