The bassist in my band went out west for like 6 months, so I haven't been gigging at all. In that time, I've decided to learn the most impossible guitar solos that I love, regardless of how long they take for me to get there, or whether I'm capable. It's been awesome.

So far, I learned a ridiculous 2 minute blistering solo of a prog metal band, a Marty Friedman solo from Megadeth, and currently working on a Zakk Wylde solo from his Ozzy days. I get obsessed when I can't do something on guitar, so that drives me forward.

I had a Marshall half stack that was like $1,500. JCM900 head and a 1960A cab.

I'd love to have either a Suhr modern or classic or an 70s/80s era Les Paul Custom. There's also an awesome guitar company called Dunable that makes amazing guitars. Give me an Orange cabinet and an old JCM 800 head or a Laney.

Paul Simon songs (other than Call Me Al, Graceland, or Slip Slidin Away) are always interesting on acoustic. 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, Kodachrome, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, etc., are all cool progressions and give you a lot of room to make them your own.

I've never had an amp that had a separate amp/cab/speaker. Always combo. Someday I've got to get a Marshall just to see how it sounds.

I don't have the patience to do that. I need to learn so new songs though. I did sit in my spare room for like 15 minutes last weekend messing around with the PRS and strat through my amp. It was fun.

I loved it, but to get the full sound, I had to play it obscenely loud. Just not worth it unless you’re playing packed clubs.

Performed at an open mic last night :blessed:

A modest accomplishment but first time I've played "out" in a few years. Only got one song bc I did the thing where you show up and don't sign up right away bc you want to "feel it out" and get a couple drinks in you :/

The star of the show was a bass player who performed a 6 minute original built entirely around the line "I don't like the way that booty taste." Or was it "I don't mind the way that booty taste"?

They were supposed to play more songs but the original open mic night we went to (hosted by the guy with the booty taste song) got canceled after they were all set up and playing because the owner forgot they had the place rented out for an entire sorority. So we broke the shit down and everyone moved a couple miles down the street.

Me and a buddy have been practicing for a few weeks. Eventually want to play a wider variety of covers and do originals but to start out we learned a bunch of Beatles songs. We were gonna do "For No One" and "I Am The Walrus" last night but when we got cut to one song we did "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away." My friend was all disappointed we only played one song and felt like we did meh but he doesn't understand what a success it is for two people in their mid 30s to actually stick to practicing something and get out there and do it. He's hooked now though and we're thinking about doing it again next week

Guys I'm in a band! We've practiced twice and we have a gig! :chatzy:

Still doing my acoustic duo project too. Been 6 years since I was in a live music project, 10+ years since I was in a band playing guitar. Now I'm in 2! :cheesy:

electronic how many guitarists are in your band? The last time I did classic rock covers we were just a trio. This time it's five piece with two guitars and I'm "lead." Sometimes I'm not sure wtf to play bc the other guy's already handling the strumming or the recognizable part of the song and I don't want to just double him and muddy it up?

I am the only guitarist, but we have a keyboard player who is amazing and harmonizes the guitar or plays rhythm for a lot of songs. When she’s playing a strong rhythm part and I don’t just want to have a wall of sound, I’ll play a lot of invtered triads to give those parts interesting accents. Then we’re not playing in the same frequency and gives those parts room to breathe.

Doesn’t work on every song, obviously, but that’s a great option to spice it up. When you kick back into playing dual choruses or whatever after backing off a bit, it really gives those parts an added crunch.

The other thing I do in those circumstances is dial my gain way back. You’ll get a lot of natural distortion just from playing at a loud volume.

Finally, finding somebody who knows all about sound frequencies in the mix is worth his or her weight in gold. I haven’t found one of those people, and I know next to nothing about it.

Another thing I'm kinda struggling with -- I grew up with "classic rock" my whole life, but I'm a 90s guy who learned how to play with palm muting and such. You ever find yourself playing a Beatles song or something and going "hmmmm, maybe I shouldn't play like James Hetfield"?

I struggle mightily with making things 10x heavier than they should be. It’s an absolute gaping weakness of mine. I played a couple shows with a little country singer girl’s band to try and rid myself of it. Was not successful. Wouldn’t recommend.

We aren't playing country though, we're playing rock. So hopefully we can meet in the middle

Do yall ever leave your strings on for months if not years? The strings on my guitars right now are at least a year old probably older.

I’m sure they sound and feel like shit unless they’re Elixirs. I’m an Elixir guy now. Changing strings is a pain in the ass, why not pay more upfront to deal with it less. They really do “work” as far as sounding new much longer than normal strings

If I’m not gigging, I don’t change them unless they’re awful.

The Ernie Ball paradigm strings have been a game changer for me. I love those on my electrics. $15 per pack, but I won’t use anything else moving forward.

got some people telling me to start doing the open mic night at a cool little wine bar by my apartment. might do it sometime soon thanks to TC inspiration.

also love new strings so much. probably change mine every 2-3 months depending on how much i'm playing and how they look/feel.

honestly would depend on how many songs they're letting people play and what kinda mood i was in/crowd looked like they were into. some places do 3 songs if you want.

off the top of my head...
Amos Lee - keep it loose keep it tight
    Under the bridge
    John mayer - sucker

if i was feelin good about the percent chances of being able to sing it that night without horribly missing any high notes... Man in the Mirror
And if it was a fun atmosphere, probably do something like "hold on we're goin home"

do have a couple of semi-work in progress originals I'd need to figure out an ending for one that is pretty damn good

I’ve played music most of my life. I can’t read sheet music. I never have. I just play by ear and always have. I think I hold my own though. I’m trying to get the band back together, blues brothers style, my buds seem down. When we record something I’ll post. It will probably belong in the heavy music thread. I’m excited though. I haven’t been excited about writing music in a while.

Are tube amps louder at the same wattage as solid state amps? I notice looking at similar sized amps in the store, the tube one will be like 15W and the solid state will be like 40. This is with the same size cabinet/speaker

I want to get a new amp. Only ever owned one which was a 50W Marshall "Valvestate" combo. Want to spend around $500 but I'd go up to 700-800 maybe. Not sure what to get. Want something that isn't overkill so I don't have to carry something heavy I don't need. Would like something with some built in effects/amp modeling. Favorite brands are Marshall/Fender but I'm not as familiar with the performance of Orange, Vox, etc. I am the lead guitar player with a standard five piece band. Post suggestions if you have any

I use a Boss Katana as a practice amp and it sounds good enough for what it is. I don't know much about modeling or built in effects though, just wanted something to play that was quieter than my tube amps.

There's a huge thread on the gear page and I know guys do gig with them if you want to find out more.

It pushes your tubes harder. Creates a natural light crunch on a clean channel. Tightens up your distortion channel. Watch a few YouTube channels about it and you'll see the difference.

You can use an attenuator, but there’s really no good answer to that dilemma.
