I didn't realize you could hunt them. Are they not protected? In florida Panthers are ultra rare so I may just be associating them erroneously

Depends on state. I hear CA won’t allow hunting them despite record #s and lots of pets going missing.

In Texas they are considered non game species and are open hunt. They just ask that you report any sightings or kills to your local game warden.

I don’t think I would ever kill one unless it was killing cattle. Or in self defense obvi

Went for my last time this year. Saw squat, but my buddy I brought killed a doe. Had about 150 yard drag through cutdown, which was exciting. Time for tree stand season!

I'm done for the year. My dad may go tomorrow or Tuesday. We've noticed one of our metal ladder stands has started to break apart so we're going to build something new in the offseason.

We have a bigger more established population than the state likes to admit. A politician attempted to get mountain lion hunting banned here recently. Did not work. We have very limited hunting and they are managed as big game.

The big cat seasons are regulated heavily in the rockies. This was Colorado where you have to check every morning to see if the quota has been met and the season is open or closed. Similar in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, etc.

Rinella had a fascinating discussion about mountain lions on his most recent episode on Rogan.

Talked about their management state to state, the stigma of hunting a creature like that, a lot of discussion about the taste of their meat. It was really interesting and of course Rinella is very educated on the subject.

I've only ever seen 4 in my life but I think they are the coolest animal in North America.

Just found out a hunt I was invited to next fall is archery only. Anyone got a recommendation on a good crossbow under 1k?

Unless you have some kind of physical ailment that will keep you from drawing a bow, just buy a bow. It's a lot more rewarding. Ever since I got back into bow hunting (thanks Bo Pelinis), shooting my bow is probably my favorite, and definitely my most practiced, hobby.

My boss uses a Matthews and it gets the job done. Think he spent about a grand on it. Only thing I’d check is to see if has a release mechanism for when it’s cocked. Saves you from having to shoot it in a bag to store it.

Edit: Didn’t want to be the guy to say “Don’t buy a cross bow and get a bow”, but do that if you can. Only reason boss uses a crossbow is we can’t get to full draw in our stand. Much more of a rifle blind.

Buddy picked up a Hoyt Powermax before our hunt in September. Seemed nice and you could outfit it with nice accessories for less than a grand. I shoot Mathews but Hoyt is one of the best bow manufacturers.

Which brings up a good thing to point out is draw length requirements. If you are tall with super long arms or short with super short arms your options will change. Regular sized dudes should be able to shoot whatever but definitely get fitted at an archery place.

Randy Bobandy let us know if you ever want accessory recs. It can be pretty overwhelming for first timers.

Killed 15 gadwalls Sunday morning. The one group of mallards we saw began working and a rifle shot happened and off they went.

I still have my Diamond from a few years ago. It gets whatever gear I take off my Mathews to replace with new shit. At this point it’s my practice bow but always feels like a worn in baseball glove when I pick it up

Most states have laws against sights/optics that extend any kind of light/beam. It uses a laser rangefinder, so it falls in that category. I looked into getting one when I first saw it, but they mention that only like a half dozen states have legalized it.

Garmin also has a version that throws up a digital pin. You shoot the range and a single point pops up at the correct spot also accounting for elevation change. It is pretty cool to see in action but takes some of the fair chase aspect out of it. I wouldn’t knock anyone that uses it but I wouldn’t use it personally.

Now I would have loved to have had it last weekend when I shot under a really nice 8.

Also I second looking at mission bows as a starting point. For about $500 you can be hunting. Go ahead and get setup now. The more time you have to practice with it the better off you will be.

Boy shoots left handed and it is an absolute bitch to find a youth/small frame bow for lefties. Basically was that or the Hoyt Fireshot. He loves archery so I'm going to get him involved in classes. I never did any of this until like 5 years ago so it's neat to see him pick it up early.
