Pagano, Joseph and Wilks are the 3 names that come up the most. I would be fine with any of the three. All strong DC's.
I think we get too caught up in that. We actually ran almost 80% of our defense out of a 3-5-3 last year. The bottom line is that a good DC (or any coach) will adapt his scheme to the talent - not force the talent into a scheme.
Wilks is a very solid and respected coach. He was the assistant Head Coach in Carolina in 2015 & 2016 as the DB coach...that says a lot about what Rivera thought of him. As the DC in 2017, the Panthers D finished: - 11th in points per game with 20.4 PPG - 15th (tied) in yards per play with 5.3 YPP - 16th in TO with 21 - 8th in least amount of penalties - #7 total defense allowing 317.1 YPG - #3 rushing defense allowing 88.1 RYPG - #18 pass defense allowing 229.1 PYPG One thing that makes this all very impressive is that this was after the off-season that the idiot Panthers’ GM let their best DB, Josh Norman go for nothing. They were forced to start rookie Bradberry & 2nd year CB Worley...both were awful. They also let both starting DE’s go (again, because the GM is a cheap idiot) and didn’t have much to work with there; and Kuechly missed time with another concussion. Wilks is a really strong hire. From both an organizational and player standpoint. I’m really hoping this gets finalized.
Great post QCT. Im much happier with Wilks signing over Vance Joseph. The guy I really wanted to land was Kris Richard, but wilks was a close second. Can't wait to see what Wilks staff looks like. Also the OC position is gonna be fascinating.
One last thing. Rumor is that browns are waiting on announcing Freddie until coordinators are finalized. Also, rumor that a few contracts might be announced at the same time... Makes me wonder if the contracts are for one or more of the following Randall Perriman Greg Robinson Boddy Calhoun Higgins
Yes. As much as I really do love how Robinson and Perrinam performed, given their history I would like to see just a little more first.
This hasn’t been mentioned yet either. I’m not very familiar with him, but a wet newspaper would be an upgrade over Amos.
guy who (allegedly) said we should put all gay people on an island and "nuke it until it glows." had a big spat with chris kluwe a few years back
eh, not quite. but there's at least one documented case of him spouting homophobic remarks, and considering everything that's happened to Kluwe since, I'm not sure why he'd lie (and continue to lie) about it.
and for the record, i really like the kitchens hire, and i'm excited about wilks. i don't quite understand their rationale behind this hire
Greg Joseph was an odd signing to begin with. Missed 4 xp and was 15/21 on fgs his senior year. Shit his career at fau he was 57/82.
Those are two fantastic hires along with Wilks for a 3rd. Monken had the TB passing game at 3rd in the NFL last season. Can’t wait to see what he and Freddie scheme up for Baker. Campen was the longest tenured Packers coach and is extremely well respected around the league. I consider this a HR hire. Wilks’ DB’s led the NFL in INT’s while he was the DB coach in CAR; then he did a masterful job with young, inexperienced DB’s as the DC. His base is a 4-3 (not that it matters) and he likes to blitz and play a lot of zone in the back end. Love all three hires. Freddie is really building a nice staff. A real nice staff.
FA’s I’d love to see them target (all are relatively young still) DT: Sheldon Richardson DE: Trey Flowers/Frank Clark LB: Dee Ford/Jordan Hicks/CJ Mosley CB: Tyrann Mathieu/Ronald Darby/Bradley Roby OT: Daryl Williams/Ja’waun James/Donovan Smith WR: Ty Williams/Adam Humphries K: Jason Myers
Most likely not, unless Baltimore decides his price is too high. I don’t expect that to be the case though. At the least I’d expect them to franchise him. My dream scenario is signing Dee at LB and Clark at DE.
i disagree. we desperately need help at LB. Kirksey can't stay healthy. Avery isn't good enough in coverage. Joe is coming up on last year of his deal. i think we target 2-3 lbs this offseason, at least for depth, and imo one elite starter.
Aren't we at the point where we can start not just being happy with a position or a player, but look at upgrading? Our LB core might be pretty good right now, but what would adding Ford make it even better? What are the glaring weaknesses that we need to address this off season? And can we address that (or those) while also upgrading positions?
