He said in an interview on the Athletic just prior to the game that if Fox had stayed, he’d be at UGA. Seems like a weird thing to say as a current UK player if it weren’t true. On the other hand, I’d never sell Fox short on underachieving.
Y'all agree with these? Spoiler Georgia's instant-impact 2019 signees Almost all of Georgia's 2019 recruiting class has already signed and more than half of them are on campus already. The Bulldogs have inked 22 players so far and could add as many as three or four more early next month on the traditional National Signing Day. A total of 14 players have made the transition from signees to new Bulldogs. They've already started classes at UGA and began working out with the team. Provided they're healthy, they'll also get the chance to participate in spring practice and appear at G-Day, getting a head start on the rest of the class. We already know that three signees will be limited for the next few months. Four-star tight end Ryland Goede and four-star linebacker Rian Davis are coming off ACL surgery in the fall while four-star linebacker Trezmen Marshall had shoulder surgery at the end of his senior high school season. Still, that leaves 11 early enrollees and eight other signees who are healthy and will have a chance to help UGA this season. The Bulldogs bring back a ton of talent but there are also plenty of players in this class talented enough to make an impact in their first year. Scroll down to see which 2019 signees will make their mark in their first season on campus. OLB JERMAINE JOHNSON 247Sports Composite: No. 1 overall JUCO, No. 1 JUCO weak-side defensive end, No. 1 in Minnesota First-year impact: We've already gotten a look at Johnson on the hoof and he certainly looks the part. Johnson is such a talented pass rusher that he's going to be tough to keep off the field. He has the length to shed blocks on the edge while possessing the explosiveness to blow right by offensive tackles in pass protection. Seeing a junior college prospect play one year and then jump to the NFL is fairly rare, but Johnson's skillset makes that a possibility. OLB NOLAN SMITH 247Sports Composite: No. 1 overall, No. 1 weak-side defensive end, No. 1 in Florida First-year impact: When it comes to his on-field attributes, Smith is in the same boat as Johnson. He's not as big or physically mature but he has speed to burn off the edge. He also shows the ability to convert from speed to power as a pass rusher and has the instincts needed to wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. Smith is also the kind of player who can contribute on special teams and play in space if he's asked. Enrolling early will help him become more comfortable in the defense. WR DOMINICK BLAYLOCK 247Sports Composite: No. 34 overall, No. 5 wide receiver, No. 7 in Georgia First-year impact: Blaylock's spot on this list is partly due to the Bulldogs losing two receivers early to the NFL Draft, but he's also really talented. Crafty route runners who have a strong feel for the position are often tough to keep off the field and that's the case with Blaylock. His quickness gives him the ability to separate quickly and he has the football speed to run after the catch. He's also a strong runner in traffic and has shown that he can break tackles and pick up extra yardage. CB DJ DANIEL 247Sports Composite: No. 6 overall JUCO, No. 2 JUCO cornerback, No. 1 JUCO in Georgia First-year impact: When Bulldog fans get a chance to see Daniel in person, they'll immediately notice his freakish length and giant hands. Those are attributes are what every defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator in America wants. He's also a big cornerback at 6-feet tall and runs really well. Daniel has some experienced guys in front of him but he's talented enough to overtake them for a starting job or potentially find a role on third down at STAR or MONEY. WR MAKIYA TONGUE 247Sports Composite: No. 208 overall, No. 8 athlete, No. 12 in Louisiana First-year impact: Once again, we point to Georgia's loss of Mecole Hardman Jr. and Riley Ridley to the NFL Draft. Kirby Smart and James Coley have shown that they like big, physical receivers and being able to block on the perimeter is a must. Tongue has the size and physicality to do that but he also has a professional pedigree. Georgia fans have seen that at work with J.R. Reed and Tongue could really benefit from the same situation. DL TRAVON WALKER 247Sports Composite: No. 11 in Georgia, No. 1 defensive tackle, No. 5 in Georgia First-year impact: Walker hasn't spent a ton of time on the defensive line at this point in his development but his raw tools are off the charts. He has the length of a defensive end, the frame of a defensive tackle, and the athleticism of a stand-up edge rushers. He's a blank canvas for defensive line coach Tray Scott and his work ethic gives him a chance to develop quickly and become a part of Georgia's defense early on. He may be more of a sub-package option right away but he'll eventually develop into a well-rounded force up front. OL CLAY WEBB 247Sports Composite: No. 23 overall, No. 1 center, No. 1 in Alabama First-year impact: Webb is one of a few players who got the headstart of all headstarts back in December. He got to practice with the team for several bowl workouts and has already strapped on the pads for the Bulldogs. Georgia is deep on the interior offensive line but Webb has the raw talent to overcome any of those more experienced players. Whether he's playing guard or center, he'll, at the very least, push those in front of him. ILB NAKOBE DEAN 247Sports Composite: No. 16 overall, No. 2 inside linebacker, No. 1 in Mississippi First-year impact: It's hard not to fall in love with Dean's speed and instincts on film. He diagnoses plays quickly, covers a ton of ground, and arrives at the football with a nasty attitude. Monty Rice, Tae Crowder, Channing Tindall, and Quay Walker are Georgia's top four at this spot but Dean is talented enough to crack that rotation. If he doesn't expect him to be a standout special teamer much like Roquan Smith was in his freshman season. QB STETSON BENNETT IV 247Sports Composite: No. 153 overall JUCO, No. 8 JUCO quarterback, No. 29 JUCO in Georgia First-year impact: Some Bulldog fans weren't very excited about adding Bennett during the Early Signing Period, but that feeling wasn't shared by the UGA coaching staff. They watched him torch the first-team defense during practice in 2017 and tried to give him a scholarship to keep him from leaving the program. Now he's back and is the favorite to be the Bulldogs' No. 2 quarterback. He probably won't get as much work on the scout team but he's a snap away from being the guy. DB LEWIS CINE 247Sports Composite: No. 58 overall, No. 3 safety, No. 8 in Texas First-year impact: Cine's versatility is what puts him on this list over Tyrique Stevenson. We see him as a guy who can play all three positions in the secondary -- safety, cornerback or STAR. The Bulldogs are the thinnest at safety and he can earn a spot in the two-deep right away. He could also pitch in at either the STAR or MONEY positions on third down. Cine is a sure tackler in space who also flashes the ability to deliver bone-jarring hits in the back half.
I don’t remember it being a package deal situation but I could be wrong. From what I remember Kentucky didn’t start recruiting him heavily until after he decommitted. It was pretty much over once they came calling. Sounds like something he’d say to save face but who knows. Hard for me to believe any kid could be that committed to Mark Fox.
I’d be surprised if Tongue, Webb, and Cine make instant impacts. I think there’s too much depth in front of them.
I don't really see it with Daniel personally. I doubt he ever plays. Maybe I'm wrong. Stetson being in there is stupid. Did Rusty write that? It's frightening that he's prob our 2nd string QB.
Stole this from 247, but would you be happy with this class? sign 7 top 100 kids: 3 17 18 21 32 36 66 then 3 more between 100-200: 135 144 155 then 1 between 200-300: 219 then 1 between 300-400: 313 then 1 between 400-500: 479 then 10 outside the top 500: 657 695 698 741 838 876 932 a juco unranked unranked Spoiler This years all sec first team when they were coming out of high school.
I’m hesitant to forecast any non-skill position players as instant impact types. I’d say the only instant impact guys we had from a heralded 2018 class were OL due to injuries and maybe Jordan Davis. (To me, that speaks to the quality of our program rather than a knock against those players).
Rowe wrote it. I didn't mean to delete the author. Agreed on Stetson, but I'm guessing that's solely bc if Fromm goes down it's Stetson time.
Stetson kinda has to be in there. He'll be playing in at least half of the games we play and is 1 play away from being the guy
I cant really disagree with anything Rowe said other than his reason for Cine being on there over Stevenson. Stevenson is just as versatile imo
I have a feeling Johnson starts game one and Travon will probably get a ton of snaps too just based on the lack of depth at DT.
Cox played immediately and Anderson came on strong as the season went along. We don't have much of a proven commodity on the edge. Mays played a lot early on due to Thomas and Cleveland getting hurt.
I wouldn’t really call Cox or Anderson impact players this year, but we may be splitting hairs at this point.
Also, I’m probably not going to do the recruiting write ups anymore. To the extent that they were ever allegedly funny, last year’s were a slog and pretty bad. I’m going to leave evaluations to the also totally unqualified website writers.
George Campbell was a stud recruit that got hurt and hasn't done shit. I'd take a shot on him with his size.
It was a bit time consuming, but last year was not enjoyable at all for me. When 95% of the players are 4 or 5 stars who are all world, it’s hard to find that many synonyms for amazing. It’s way more fun when I can thoroughly shit on some merely good player and when I have no basis for knowing the good ones from the mediocre ones.
My niece is a freshman at your dumb school and is looking at apartments for when she moves off campus next year. She sent me a link to a complex named Athens Ridge. Looks nice for a college complex. Pros? Cons?
That place is alright. The units are pretty spacious. The pool is nice and all, but it's pretty far from campus. They run a bus to campus (which runs at night as well for going downtown) but it can be a pain getting to campus. Also, they are notoriously bad about repairs and things like that. I would tell her to look into Towne Club, River Mill, Waterford Place for places that are walking distance to campus and downtown which makes your life a lot easier. The downtown high rises (Standard, GA Heights, The Mark etc.) are fun but not worth the money imo. If she likes to party she might like living in a loft downtown.
Cotton Exchange Lofts downtown. They were brand new when I was a senior (2007-2008). I wish I had lived there all three years.
one thing that killed me about living downtown was the late night/early morning noise. bars open til 3am, leaf blower at 4am, garbage trucks at 6am etc.
