Only episode of season 2 I liked was the one where Purple Man was "back". Show just wasn't the same without him.
I think Disney is forcing their hand somehow. Don't think they'd willing cancel shows like DD and Punisher with how well they've been received.
No, it's pretty much come out that Netflix doesn't want to promote the content of a soon to be competitor essentially. It was also really expensive for Netflix to produce these shows compared to shows they the produced themselves .
Finally got around to seeing Spider-verse. So, so, so good. Also had no idea Nic Cage was in it, and audibly laughed when I heard his voice the first time. Easily the best animated comic book movie I've ever seen, and could rival almost anything Pixar has done.
Yep, the cultural significance was clearly influential in getting this nomination. IW is far superior to BP.
Black Panther should win best costume design, would’ve also been happy with a best supporting actor nod.
Also, sorry if I missed conversation on this, but Spiderverse has got to be a lead into merging Fox and MCU, right?
Yeah, the fact that it has zero other nominations kind of tells the story on its best picture nomination.
Yeah, maybe it’s because it’s fresh in my mind, but I’m gonna cement it as #1 for me, too. So well done.
Yeah but Winston Duke didn't get a ton of screen time to merit best supporting actor consideration even though he carried the film.
Spiderverse was great. But Infinity War is the better movie and probably has more meaning since it’s the culmination of a decade of fan investment
Best Picture, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Production Design
Disagree with this, although it's impossible to compare because IW had a decade of build up for characters with a much more complex story to put together than BP did.
Right exactly. Which is why IW is a fantastic film...it had a decade of build up and back story. But you can’t watch IW and come away thinking it is a great film without having seen multiple prior MCU films. You don’t need to have seen a single other MCU film to enjoy Black Panther.
Sure, but my point is that we shouldn't ever put them in any comparison, then. I guess we're probably saying the same thing and I just incorrectly read the context of your first post on it. I liked BP. Not as much as some did (I think T'Challa was kind of,a weak character in the movie compared to others), but still one of the better standalone Marvel movies. I think people would nitpick a bit more at some of the movie if it weren't for the cultural significance stuff (similar to Wonder Woman), but it's also completely understandable.
Best thing about BP was Michael B. Jordan. Other than that seemed pretty average film sans cultural impact.
Coogler is going to have to make T'Challa a bit more interesting for him to carry an entire movie the way Stark, Cap, Thor, Strange, and even Ant-Man have done. If not, he better keep writing and casting great villains. I found T'Challa far more interesting in his smaller role in Civil War than his standalone movie.
I enjoyed Black Panther and respect its cultural impact, but, as I’ve said in this thread, it was an upper mid-tier standalone Marvel film for me. Certainly not one of my favorites. I don’t think anyone can objectively argue that cultural impact isn’t playing a factor in the Best Picture Oscar nomination.
This is nonsense. LOTR Return of the King literally won Best Picture as the last part of a trilogy and is one of the best films of all-time. I'm not telling you to give IW an Oscar (or BP, frankly) but it's OK to need context sometimes, that doesn't and shouldn't detract from the experience.
Who said anything about detracting from the experience? I said the difference is that BP works better as a stand-alone film. Seems obvious.
