My thoughts exactly. Mescalito is one of my favorite albums all time so it’s disappointing most of his work after that just isn’t that good.
junky star had a couple of good songs, as did fear and saturday night. but neither approaches mescalito, which was one of the best albums of that decade IMO. didn't really like roadhouse sun at all, and tomorrowland was a complete trainwreck from my point of view.
You're not wrong. His whole dynamic has always fascinated me because he's rotating band members a lot and toying with new sounds on each record, when the truth is he's best with just an acoustic guitar and a harmonica. Add some mandolin and fiddle if you want, but a lot of his heavy, "rock" tracks are forced and just plain bad.
Wow I didn’t know that thread existed. Going to Turnpike next Friday and Steamboat in January. Red dirt is the best.
Saw turnpike last night. Either Felker was fucked up or he just always looks and acts fucked up from long term alcohol abuse
Sounded good. My first time seeing them so don’t have much to compare to but it was a solid show. They only played for like an hour and 15 min which was a little bit of a letdown but they rolled right through the set. Probably because Felker wouldn’t be able to stand up much longer
Started listening to Cody Johnson not too long ago. Really like a lot of his stuff, but this song really gets me.
love cody johnson fucking Evan felker, between the booze and not keeping his dick in his pants, is going to inevitably cause the breakup of one of the best groups out there.
surprised it hasnt happened yet. When he got clean last year they were great and they started to blow up. It looks like it was short lived and he'll be the demise of the group
Don't sound too bad. Hopefully they get him back on his feet. Would be a travesty to lose a band like turnpike. Fucking Miranda Lambert.
yeah the problem was he found a drinking buddy cause she drinks just as much as him and tossed him to the side once she was done with him
Bingham is coming to Phoenix in March, very torn whether I want to go. I would gladly pay $40 to hear him play Mescalito in its entirety. I'm afraid it's going to be almost all new shit though.
For any vinyl collectors. I have little faith the album is going to be good but I’m a sucker for colored vinyl and it being limited to 750 copies figured might as well snag one.
Haven’t listened to it yet, but Bingham is on a podcast called WellRed Comedy. They’re hilarious so I think it’ll be a good episode
I doubt it'll be a bad show. Plus, sometimes the new shit sounds better live. I've been to a lot of shows where I wasn't crazy about the newest stuff from a band but wound up loving it after the show. Worth a shot.
I've said it ITT many times but I will not spend any more money on Turnpike shows. Their Chicago shows have all been a disaster. Starts off great, gets sloppy, and ends with Evan not knowing the lyrics for the last 2-3 songs.
The one time I saw them live they were great. The second time got cancelled a week before the show. About sums it up
Saw them twice in Nebraska last year. Absolutely phenomenal shows. Fuck Miranda Lambert. I hope they can get Evan felker back on a good path because they are probably my favorite band. Gonna suck if we never get another turnpike album
They're scheduled for their first performance at the Houston Rodeo this year, would be a shame if they tank it, even worse if they cancel late. Of the concerts at the rodeo this year I'm probably more disappointed I can't make it back for Kacey Musgraves on opening night
Pretty crazy to see her progression from singing backup on some Josh Abbott tracks to touring the world. Never heard of that other group but sounds like a comfortable pairing for them to perform together
Had some weird flashbacks and knew I heard of Cody Johnson from this thread. TMB was always streets ahead. My company has a suite at the Rodeo and in my role I get some info about who uses it and what nights...pissed me off to no end last year when I saw it was unused for both Aaron Watson and Cody Johnson
They need to stop scheduling new tour stops until Felker can get some help. They're really fucking over a fanbase that's been overly patient with them through a series of last minute cancellations and sets ruined by Felker being drunk.
It did. Saving Country Music said they talked to a few folks there who said it was a really good show.
Went down a Mike McClure rabbit hole and found this. Anybody heard of Dylan Stewart? This song is awesome and he's got such a cool voice.
Smh. The video linked in here, Turnpike comes on about the 1hr and 6 minutes mark. It's a real tough/sad watch.
