I need recommendations on the best off the typical tourist path restaurants in metro Detroit. Good for a Saturday night, preferably an area where you could kill an hour before and after dinner at a boozer. Polish is Hamtramck, MexicanTown?? What do you guys think?
Away from suburban tourists? Matys Any Asian food in Madison Heights Pupuseria salvadoreno Asian Corned Beef Sterling's BBQ Scotty Simpsons The Jamaican Pot Sonny's Hamburgers I love all of the above but you may not want to hang out drinking around them. If you meant away from actual tourists from out of town...that's not really an issue in Detroit yet. The most touristy places I guess are Coneys and pizza and we still like that shit.
I am a suburban tourist so lookin for something a little different than Greektown, Appartus Room, Prime & Proper, Bucharest etc.
Have you been to West Village before? If not, that's a good idea. Try Marrow or Craft Work Eastern Market - Catching dinner at Kung Food Kitchen (or their dumpling making class if you like to cook) is always a great experience. Gather is worth a stop as well and has a fancy beer bar upstairs now. Southwest it depends on what you want. Takoi and Flowers of Vietnam are always pretty fun. Obviously tons of Mexican. El barzon for nicer. If you want to dine in Hamtramck get on the revolver mailing list and find a pop up that tickles your pickle. Some old classics are also out there including Baker's keyboard lounge for live music and soul food, Giovanni's, Dakota Inn, la dolce Vita, etc.
Are you talking metro Detroit as Detroit or near Detroit proper, or will you be in the suburbs? Palette in Milford is great, with a solid bar and music, but that's a long, long way from the city.
Downtown Plymouth is exactly what you are looking for. 10 or so restaurant/bars with a quarter mile distance. Small downtown, but always bustling. 25 min west of downtown Detroit. Barrio is one of the best Mexican restaurants in all of metro Detroit.
Oh, I know. I laughed. I just thought telling you your coat was gonna need a coat was also funny. In any event, I've lived in this shit my whole life and a -30 wind chill isn't something I'm going outside during.
The funny part is our brew tour of Detroit (i assume a bus tour with beer on board) is supposed to be Wednesday. Being from the south, it'll be kinda cool to experience it for a week. I fully admit there's zero chance I could live in that weather though. I'm just not built for it.
There's definitely a reason people from here spend the winter in the South. I'd much prefer it was going to be 60 and sunny on Wednesday.
Wife was complaining that it'll be 50 in Alabama this week when she visits. I gave her an eat shit glare.
So all of my feed is graphics and charts telling me we're all about to die this week. Schools and GV's campus were called hours ago and a bunch of local businesses as well.
I work at a Healthcare office in West MI. Several others have closed. Our managers refused (we are an OP PT clinic) and we are up to 56 cancels so far today. Boy, they showed us!
Glad I came in to sit here watching the snow out the window. The decision makers will wait until the roads are completely fucked and then "close the office early" at 430pm, sending the support staff out into the tail end of the storm.
They've honestly done a great job. Residential areas/side streets are fucked in places but all the main roads I've been on have been fine, much prefer this to the ice we had a couple weeks ago.
Ended with about 90 total cancellations when I left. It’s a large clinic (20ish clinicians normally) and no one saw more than 3 people all day. BUT WE DIDNT CLOSE!
My buddy is a dentist in GR and our flight from our Florida golf trip cancelled Sunday to come back. We ended up paying a lot for a one way on a different airline to get back Sunday knowing we would probably be stuck until Thursday if we didnt. Any day he misses with owning his own practice eats right into his own bottom line. Spoiler He ended up closing anyway because he knew no one would show up.
Everything is closed here for today and tomorrow, my office told us all just to work from home. Gonna be -18 tonight, before wind chill.
My office wouldn't close for global thermonuclear war. They'd make everybody come in and then close at 4pm.
