The diagnostic test person (my wife was the one who went) said this would likely be the case and honestly I'm worried that if we had done it sooner she wouldn't be behind on some of her language skills. I'm hoping we won't have to wait a long time to schedule the procedure.

The procedure is not a serious deal, I can't imagine you'd have to wait longer than a month to get in. I wouldn't lose sleep over it having impacted development, kids are very resilient and will make up any lost ground quickly, barring any other underlying issues, IMO.

Thanks guys, could have definitely been worse (my wife's nephew had to have freaking heart surgery at six months), but of course anytime anesthesia is used I'm a bit nervous as my wife had to have two major surgeries to insert rods into her back and had a lot of trouble breathing afterwards. She had the same problem too when she had to go under for a c-section and was in ICU to monitor her oxygen level for several hours.

5 year old had a touch of flu recently and the doc said his tubes are actually still in place, been there for like 3 years now
Apparently they usually fall out after a year or something

We ended up with tubes for JC Jr. at 12 months. His ears were a constant struggle. I do think it impacted his hearing and speech because the day after he got tubes he never stopped talking and hasn’t since. He still doesn’t speak many words but he understands most everything and babbles to no end. It was a godsend on the health front and the bonus seems to be that it significantly improved his speech and hearing.

My son had tubes for ear infections at 1 year as well. We're hoping to do it with our daughter too because she has had 3 in the last 1.5 months. The whole thing took less than 20 minutes and from my understanding most of the time is spent on the computer and checking to ensure it is the right kid. The actual procedure is like 30 seconds or less. We could tell he could hear a lot better after the fluid drained away and he certainly had fewer ear infections. I have a niece that they waited too long to do it on and she was behind verbally and having balance issues. The balance fixed quickly but she is taking speech therapy classes now. She should be fine eventually but my opinion is do it as soon as you can in these situations.

Tubes are easy. my son got them at 14 months. My wife and I walked him back to the room where he would have it done and then went to the waiting room to get a coffee. My cup didn't even get half full before my pager went off saying the procedure was over and it was time to meet with the Dr. Best thing we did for him as he was miserable from all of the ear infections he had. No hearing issues though.

2 year old evidently didn’t have enough food on her stomach when I gave her medicine this morning. Wife called that she was turning around at daycare bc she threw up on herself in the car. First time I’ve had to cleanup the car seat from puke. Would much rather her throw up on me than in the car seat. So many little places I was finding that I missed. I’m sure puke is still in there.

We get to go home yesterday , but it's not all good news, because of the amount of episodes on the right side of her brain she has 1.3 cm of scarring that is localized and from what they can tell not spreading. The location is very rare it is usually where adults get a tumor nor infants. It isn't a matter of if but when she will have to have surgery to get it removed. Basically an episode no matter how long or severity while on the meds pushes up the date. Yeah.... but I'm glad we aren't doing a wait and see approach because it is basically a time bomb that eventually would cause problems. So the choices are meds for her for life or surgery that might insure she is seizure free for life. Looking like the summer will be the surgery date. received_550648672097412.jpeg

    Story time...

Last night Mrs. lechnerd says it would be a good idea to let all the kids sleep with us. I try to win one battle and argue the baby should sleep in her crib. She agrees but the other 3 kids (ages 7, 3 and 2) all sleep with us.

Letting the kids sleep with us always starts out good. Lots of snuggling and good feelings but it rapidly deteriorates into chaos. The 2 and 3 year old are out of their routine and so they're not falling asleep. I myself can't fall asleep either so I have the bright idea to start watching the movie Collateral. Have to finish that movie once I start it so I'm up for another 2 hours. I finally fall asleep super late. Throughout the night its constant kicking, the covers are a disaster, the kids toenails are like razor blades so I'm getting sliced and diced but then the worst moment hits. I feel moisture on my hand, I touch my face while still in a daze and rapidly realize I've smeared urine all over my face. I immediately start feeling my kids to see who peed. It was my 3 year old who has been out of diapers for over 6 months. She is soaked in urine, as is my 2 year old to a lesser degree (she was holding him), and our sheets are soaked too (luckily we have a mattress protector). So we're up at 5 am on a Sunday giving everyone baths and changing our clothes and sheets and nobody can fall back asleep. Wonderful.

Not a radiologist but looks like the temporal lobe/hippocampus.

Toughest part for me is the location, not accessible at all, I think a biopsy would be very tricky if not out of the question.

Surgery is likely her course as you suggested. I think they do a procedure with the acronym LITT in a scenario like this. I would do TONS of research on the surgeon before I settled. I don't think there are a lot of brain surgeons who specialize in this specific area and the number of pediatric surgeons that specialize in that area has to be even smaller. You may have already done this but ask the surgeon how many of this specific type of surgery they have done, success rate, recent failures and why, look up malpractice on the state's medical board, etc. There's not a lot of differentiation between docs at my level but when you get to this ultra-niche pediatric scenarios the differences between docs would astound you.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of factors in your control with regards to your daughter's situation but choosing the surgeon is the biggest decision you control.

Good luck, hope everything works out for you guys.

Pretty much the neurologists are just dangling this in front of the surgeons seeing who will jump at this. From what they've told us that her case and this surgery in this location is very rare in infants. The 3rd month appt is going to be very important.

Sounds like a walk in the park compared to my two boys (5 this week and 2.5) who love punching me in the balls. I’ve got to permanently be ready because they walk by and do a cup check. The older one got me good this afternoon.

Did the whole family thing today to celebrate my brother's adoption. Pulled my daughter(5) out of school and my son(2) out of daycare to join in the festivities. We all went to my other brothers for breakfast and then to an American Ninja Warrior style gym that had an area for kids and let them burn off a bunch of energy. My son started to cough a bit and by the end he developed a 102 degree fever. My wife took him in to our pediatrician and he has influenza. Fucking great.

Forgot to mention before she even left I brought him upstairs. I had him in one arm laptop in the other as I'm working from home. I've never done it and am extremely paranoid about it but of course this time I leave the gate at the top stairs open. I put him and my laptop down, don't even remember what I did, but I turned around and he's about 3 feet from the open gate just standing there. He didn't move and I got to him in what felt like a split second. Felt like I was having a heart attack and just sat there reflecting on what a fucking idiot I was but so thankful nothing happened. Wife wasn't too comforted leaving after that.

Potty training the 2yr old. She’s sitting on her potty, gets this scared look on her face, gets up and sprints to their princess table they eat at. She then grabs the edge, sticks her butt out, and sprays crap about 2 feet away. She then freaks out and steps in as she walks all over the carpet. About an hour later the 5 yr old is drinking her protein shake and not paying attention. She spills all of it on herself, the plush kids chair that has to be thrown away now, and the carpet in their bedroom. Needless to say this has been one of those nights that a stiff drink is in order.

Update on solo weekend, been pretty great

I’ve discovered I’m the far superior parent. Better naps, got him drinking milk, sleeping in later.
Watched him pee on the rug right in front of me that was neat.

But really been an awesome few days. Made me realize I’ve had my wife take the brunt of baby duty and overlooked this time, trying not to regret my lack of involvement. Last night putting him to bed was probably the most connected I’ve ever felt to him. Rocking and shushing him he looked at me, damn near poked me in the eye touching my face, and then gave me a huge hug. Shed a tear for the first time in awhile.
