Trying to get my brain around blackface in VA. I think Northam should resign based on how things have unfolded. Dem rhetoric is that Mark Herring is lumped in with racists for admitting blackface when he was 19. The role of politician is different than the role of entertainer. That said, if we’re going to ignore the pervasive ignorance of blackface in years past and just claim people’s intent racist, then I think the same people should credibly call for the jobs of every tv and movie personality that has done blackface, as well as producers or execs that gave the green light. Maybe they’re racists, but at the very least they perpetuated the casual nature of blackface. Does anyone think a 19 year old in 1980s VA is more culpable than the aforementioned? I don’t.

People can easily avoid entertainers who have used blackface. People cannot avoid political representatives who have used blackface. I don’t think those are particularly analogous. I don’t have an answer for how to deal with folks like Herring. I definitely agree that Northam’s photo is significantly worse than Herring’s. That being said, I’m not sure the extent to which that matters for an elected representative. My gut reaction is that folks should have the ability to judge for themselves when they vote for such a candidate, and Herring hasn’t given them that choice at present.

So the argument wasn't the religion. The Imam was able to be in the witness area just not in the execution chamber for security reasons.
