All aboard the train of love... We’re going full steam ahead...choo choo! The caboose is filled with broken hearts and The conductor...is...a kiss!
last year's remix went a long way towards making that one at least tolerable. I don't know if there's any salvaging of this year's. I miss the original Ken Marino version.
Started listening to Monstruo, from the same guy who does Sword and Scale. The first story about The Butcher (especially part two) is fucked up. It’s interesting enough and I’ll probably keep listening for now, but Mike Boudet comes across as so self-indulgent and smarmy that it’s sometimes hard to listen to him.
I couldn't possibly recommend Revolutions more if you enjoy history. A lot of the seasons didn't interest me much at first either but you will learn so much from them and Mike is such a great story teller that it's easy to listen to him talk about anything. Never planned on learning all about Simon Bolivar and the history of Venzuela/Columbia/etc. but I'm glad I did. Monstruo is pretty meh so far. I've listened to all of The Butcher and The Ripper. Seems like it exists solely to let Mike and his partner indulge in their wordy, pretentious edgelord ways. They seem more interested in shocking and offending people on social media than trying to tell a good story. "The Ripper" isn't even novel (and impossible to take serious) if you've listened to Timesuck at all.
I ended up getting Audibles from Amazon the app for audio books and you get one free book. I got The Story of World War II by Donald Miller. I've listed to hours and hours of it. Pretty good.
Anybody listened to Finding Drago? It took me a while to start because I didn’t think the premise sounded all that interesting but it’s really well done. Basically these two comedians from Australia who are big movie buffs read something online about an Ivan Drago unauthorized spin off novel and all this weird stuff about the author. It just gets weirder from there. It’s investigative in nature but feels like a comedy podcast when you listen to it.
I randomly came across “The Drop Out.” It follows the chick from the Theranos fraud. Just absolutely amazing how she perpetrated it. She was on every top entrepreneur list in the country and had some of the wealthiest most prestigious advisors riding with her. Only about three episodes in but enjoying them so far. All with a product that hardly worked and when it did it wasn’t accurate. On a side note I may be the asshole but changing from a vial of blood to a drop isn’t that world changing. Now if they could have dropped the cost that would have been world changing but they really focused on how much less blood was needed. It sucks but it is just inconvient, not life altering.
I found this podcast where these two dudes talk about every episode of Star Trek ever. There are 726 and they are like halfway through. It's... beautiful http://www.missionlogpodcast.com/archive/
Can't remember if someone mentioned it in here but Backstory is pretty good if you like history stuff. Some of the topics are a big meh but some are interesting. The one about the Spanish Flu was good. 50-100 million people died worldwide from it
Didn’t see it mentioned but Gimlet got bought by Spotify for over $200 million. It’s cool to see them succeed after listening to Startup. Hope they hold off on putting all their podcasts exclusively on Spotify
Happy for Gimlet, but really hope they don't pull from other services. I love Pocketcasts. I use Spotify for music, but I want it to be just that.
This has been an interesting podcast. Ive been so interested in this story. Ive read the book on it ect. It's dumb to argue it now because it's all fake, but their claim was the one drop of blood would change the world because it would be cheaper, wouldnt need a professional to draw the blood, the test to run it would be less expensive, shorter turn around time ect. Basically it sounded too good to be true... and it was.
Marco Arment (creator of Overcast, host of the podcast ATP, programmer who got filthy rich off Tumblr, investor in Gimlet) says it’ll probably just be their new stuff becomes Spotify only.
I don’t think segmentation of the podcast industry is good for the medium, but I guess we’re all about to find out.
That was his point, and followed it up by that Apple is by far the largest single podcast app and they have shown no signs of this, so for now it should remain open as a rule. There’s plenty of little private podcast outfits and the medium is growing.
Listening to true crime podcast called Cold, it’s about a creepy ass Mormon dude who likely killed his wife. It’s really unsettling because it has audio diaries from the guy who comes across like an inception creep to the max.
I really like a lot of the stuff Gimlet does. I also really need someone else to listen to Finding Drago
It's not really. The creator is really, really good. Hes a legit journalist. Like yeah he has opinions on people he hates and hes waaaaay more well read than I'll ever be. I can say he thinks trump and his cadre are idiots, but...
Can’t recommend it enough. I have blitzed through it after those in this thread recommended it. It’s amazing really. He has a lot of episodes for only being out under a year with most stretching to be two parters.
Funny when you listen to the early ones (think it was cosby?) Where hes like "we're doing an uncharacteristic two parter this time, they wont all be like this"
Not sure who recommended The Jeselnik and Rosenthal Vanity Project, but it's turned into one of my favorite weekly pods. Makes me audibly laugh multiple times per episode.
I loved it, I’m hesitant to recommend it to too many people because it’s so weird. But I thought it was perfectly done and such a great ending and hilarious story. They did such a good job of telling it too. I want to be a Noy scholar now.
I heard it was great so I downloaded it but it sat in my app for like a month just because it didn’t seem that interesting.
Anyone else find themselves rewinding a podcast often? So many times I’m driving and and just daydreaming and realize I have no idea what’s going on anymore. Much like reading a book
Cold was very good, it’ll make your blood boil at points, and is incredibly creepy because of some of the characters involved and how fucked up they are but it was a very thorough true crime podcast. Highly recommend.
