Gonna read a Sanderson. Tell me where to start. Don't even have to tell me why, just name the best book to start with. TIA.

Best book to start with imo is Mistborn: The Final Empire. If you like that trilogy then you can graduate to The Stormlight Archive and the rest of the Cosmere.

Fargin' Icehole Mistborn series is a great place to start. Stormlight Archive is his best work but it’s a big commitment and currently unfinished. Warbreaker and Elantris are really good stand alones.

How old are your kids again? He has children’s books (Alcatraz series, first book Alcatraz vs The Evil Librarians). And YA books. The Reckoners series, Skyward series and The Rithmatist.

I'd start with Mistborn, at least the first 3 books (Can't comment on the rest, haven't read those). If you like those, you'll also love Stormlight Archive, which has much more meat to it. I'm nearing the end of Oathbreaker, and it feelsbadman.

Did you ever read Oathbringer? If so, from your spoiler
Nighblood isn't a shard blade it's an awakened sword (given life by breath as you mention). It's in Oathbringer as the sword Szeth calls Sword-nimi

Finished Warbreaker, loved it. I want more of Vasher’s story. What should I read now? Have also completed all of the Mistborn trilogy and Stormlight Archive. Have Alloy of Law and Emperor’s Soul on my kindle at the moment.

Emperor’s Soul is my favorite novella ever. Go ahead and enjoy it. Then go on to the Wax and Wayne Mistborn books (Alloy of Law)

    Warbreaker and Stormlight spoilerish

You’ll have to wait for more Stormlight to read more about Vasher (hopefully you caught that Kaladin and Adolin’s swordmaster Zahel is Vasher.) Sanderson is planning a Warbreaker sequel called Nightblood but it’s a long ways off.

Also Brandon is the best. His world nay Universe building. His hidden clues, the way all his books are interconnected. The sheer consistency he has with regards to publishing consistently great novels and novellas. His annual updates with exactly where he is in all of his projects and what is on the horizon.

    He is the best

Just did Skyward about a week ago with a free audible trial. It was ok to good, 7.5/10. Think it’s better than the Reckoners and Elantris but inferior to everything else, imo. Kept me interested enough to read the sequel.

Emperor’s Soul tho. Good lord what amazing writing that is.

Have Warbreaker in my audiobook queue, otherwise I’ve read everything Sanderson has written except the Librarians series

Restarted the Stormlight Archives... I'm almost through with book 1, and it's kind of awesome listening again. Have a feeling this will keep me pretty tied up for a while.

That's only book 1, I've got 12 hours left on it. I'm also planning on listening to the next 2, and mayyyybe Edgedancer in between books 2 and 3. I still haven't listened to book 3, so I figured why not got a full fledged refresher on the story.

I already bought it, so why not? I tried to listen when I was so far removed from his cosmere that it didn't grab my attention like his stuff usually does, so I think being more engulfed will help quite a bit.

I finished Elantris, liked it more overall than Warbreaker. Although philosophically speaking, Warbreaker is ahead of it by a good margin. I think I just liked the pacing of Elantris more.

I just started Emperor's Soul. Once that's done will pry read the Elantris short story and then move to Wax and Wayne.

Just finished The Hero of Ages. Really liked all 3. I gave an audible "Hell yeah" at this paragraph

We create things to watch them grow, Ruin , she said. To take pleasure in seeing that which we love become more than it was before. You said that you were invincible — that all things break apart. All things are Ruined. But there are things that fight against you — and the ironic part is, you can’t even understand those things. Love. Life. Growth . The life of a person is more than the chaos of its passing. Emotion, Ruin. This is your defeat .

Stormlight Archive if you want to read his best. Warning, though: they’re long as hell and the series is incomplete.

Wax and Wayne if you want to keep up with Mistborn. They’re different, though.

I don’t know which standalones you’ve read but there’s Warbreaker, Elantris, etc. They’re all connected in the Cosmere.

+1 for Stormlight Archive. Sheer scope of the story/world is huge, but it's still a character driven story. If you liked the world building of Mistborn, you'll love Stormlight Archive (which just takes it to another level). Not sure if you're into audiobooks, but each one is in the 40-50 hour range, just to give you an idea, and read by the same narrator as Mistborn.

About 22 hours in the the 55 hour beast Oathbreaker. Really like SA so far. Didn't realize it's suppose to be 10 books in total. Kinda regret starting it. I know he's working other stuff too but I don't see him ever finishing this. Im jaded with GRRM and Scott Lynch being recent reads. Plus as I get older I cant remember all the stuff that happens in previous books especially with a few years in between each :feelsbadman:

Just seems like he has so much stuff going on at the moment. Just thinking out loud, going by past publishing dates, 1 SA book every 3 or 4 years will put the ending around 2038-ish. Thats not even considering if any of his stuff makes it to TV or theaters, where he'll be some sort of advisor.

Better than we’re getting from any other author, and his side projects largely tie in to the same universe and are quality reads (unlike zero side projects from Rothfuss and Lynch and bullshit side projects from Martin that he isn’t even the author of)

I don’t blame anyone for holding off though. One of my friends reads a ton of fantasy (and all other Sanderson works) and is waiting until the first five are done to read those, since the first five are somewhat self contained with a large timeline jump before book 6.

Finished The Emperor’s Soul last week, damn it was good. A pretty perfect story in all aspects. I just have the Wax and Wayne series and then I’ve read the majority of the main Cosmere books. I may take a break from Sanderson though and read the first Malazan novel.

Wrapping up Words of Radiance. I really want to go straight into Oathbringer as I really didn’t care for or find interest in Lift’s story. How much will I miss if I “read” Oathbringer before Edgedancer?
