I’m checking in at 205 right now and can run 3 miles in 25:15 or so. My plan is to get down under 190 for my sprint-tri this August.
After one month off for the foot, the doctor said he didn't see anything in the x-rays (of course any muscle damage would be MRI territory) so I ran this morning and will run 6 tomorrow to see if I feel anything. It's highly possible my feet just weren't ready for these new running shoe in December. Feeling good after 3 mile this morning though, not even a hint. Time heals all wounds, yes?
I'd do 3 a few more times and then add 1 mile at a time. It can be really frustrating but I tend to err on the side of caution.
Yeah I think I read somewhere you shouldn’t increase your mileage by more than 20% in 1 run. You’d be increasing by 100% after battling back from an injury, not a good idea IMO. I’d do 3 for at least a week and then 4 for a week, 5 for a week....you get the idea.
4 hours today with mix of trail/pavement 23.7 miles Was hoping for 5 hours but needed to abort due to burning through all my fuel and couldn’t carry enough liquid without being bogged down. Hard to run that long on your own with no aid stations and having to carry everything you need. Definitely fighting a cold as I woke up not feeling great but pace is right where I’m hoping for the 6 hour in two weeks. Although at that pace/distance it’ll be roughly 3500-3600 ft of gain to factor in based on course. 30 miles is my absolute minimum goal. 50k distance is ideal. Anything beyond that and I’ll be thrilled.
I think I got a pinched nerve from my run last week. I might have over exerted myself but does anyone have any history with this and if so what it might have caused it? Took a couple days off and now I am good.
I’m ditching my Air Pegasus for some ASICS I’ve had for awhile that look like shoes for senior citizens but are so much better on my feet. Sucks because the Air Pegasus are fresh af
Need some advice. I'm running a relay race in two weeks. I have a 7 mile leg then roughly 4 hours later a 5 mile stretch. I didn't really think about it but that second leg is going to really hurt after my groin tightens up from the first run. Any suggestions? Any particular stretch you would recommend?
Any spring races coming up? I've got the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 8 weeks. It's my favorite race every year and I'm excited about it. Highly recommend y'all try to get up to DC and run it at least once.
I think I did my PB today or at least my PB in the last 2 years or so....3 miles in 25 minutes. Nothing like you warriors but I’m getting there.
posted this in another thread, I'm not nearly as good as you all, but figured you could offer some guesses on what's wrong and treatment.
Too much, too fast. You went over your typical run in brand new shoes after a week off. Give your feet a few days and then break it back in. The typical training standard is never adding more than 10% to previous week total.
Single leg exercises a few times a day. Work on strengthening those other foot muscles and improving balance.
I had a similar experience a couple weeks ago. Think it was a pinched nerve and it went away after staying off my feet as much as I could for a couple of days.
Kind of what I figured. I've never had that problem in previous shoes and times though. I'm a notorious person for going balls out and then stopping, then going hard again. I've done greater than 10% in a week multiple times. But I will listen to your advice. I had chalked it up to just being in work shoes at a show all week. But I also have never ran this much. And like you say, switching shoes midstream doesn't help.
Could be new shoes, could be ramping it up too quick. Might be able to look into heel cup inserts for your shoes to help alleviate pain. I had some Achilles tendinitis this past summer after a lot of aggressive and steep hiking and it started messing with my running. Bought a cheap pair like the ones below and put them in my running shoes and trail shoes and made a huge difference https://www.target.com/p/dr-scholl-...pv_vEH1vvhTYSewwcsaAu-DEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#
appreciate the reply. I didn't change type of shoes, just went from a pair with 300 miles to a fresh one. Thinking a combination of that and going to hard was the main factor. Will put more insight into shoes though, I never realized how much they mattered
I think you’ll be ok with some light stretching after finishing the first leg. Groin, quads, hamstrings, calves. Just keep hydrated in between with water and don’t eat anything crazy. Stick to salty stuff combined with the water to prevent from any sort of cramping once you start back up.
Can just be as simple as standing on one leg for a bit or hopping around on one leg. Single leg dead lifts without shoes are good too. A few more can be found here. https://www.instagram.com/joegambin...tm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=11k49je07mt6j I'm finding out first hand that poor foot strength and limited ankle mobility really cause a lot of issues.
That sounds like a great scenic run. Speaking of scenic, I just pulled the trigger on the Keys 50 mile ultra in May. They do 50k, 50m, or 100m. The 50m portion is from Marathon, FL all the way down to Key West. Should be awesome since it’s all along the water and crossing over the causeways. Doing it with a buddy of mine who lives in FL and we’ve been talking about running an ultra together. I’ll be coming from Colorado so I’m thrilled to be running a flat course at zero elevation. Trying to get him to return the favor and do a trail 50k with 6300 ft of gain in Steamboat in August. He’ll probably do it but I don’t think he has yet to comprehend how much the altitude will fuck with him.
Waiting on the official results to be posted by the race director, but finished up a 6 hour ultra yesterday. Longest amount of time I’ve spent running for one time in my life. Had a great time and seemed to come away pretty unscathed. Right knee and left achilles a bit sore today but legs and feet are in great shape. Think I calculated 29.11 miles for myself based on the loops I did. Goal was 30 miles at minimum but still really pleased considering the conditions. Hats off to the folks who did the 15 and 30 hour options. The course was in the foothills near Colorado Springs. The morning started off upper 20s, low 30s with a ton of wind. Probably gusting up to 30-35 mph at times. I’d open my truck door and it’d get blown shut in my face pre-race. The people doing the 15 and 30 hour were camping near the start and the race director said it was howling from midnight until the start. He sent an email at 330 in the morning saying shit is in disarray but we’re still running. Wind so strong it blew over a steel framed canopy they had set up and sent it flying into the back of the Uhaul rental van rear window and shattering it. There were also many mountain lion jokes after the guy in Fort Collins choked out that cat earlier in the week. Despite there being a known lion den close to the trails we were running, there were no mountain lion sightings. They probably got blown off the mountain. The wind died down quite a bit an hour or two into the start. Mostly overcast day topping out in the mid 40s for the high so all the permafrost in the ground started melting about halfway through for me. 1 of the 2 loops I was running turned to complete shit. So much mud. And most of the mud was on uphill sections so you had no choice but to trudge through. The Mother Nature facture there definitely cost me some miles but everyone was facing it and this race series is pretty much about adversity so you get what you sign up for. My nutrition and hydration were a million times better than the 27k I did in December (same race series). Started cramping up around 4 hours in but hit the salt tablets hard and went straight for salty snacks at the aid station. Was able to get balanced and finish it out ok. Very curious to see how everyone did simply because it was less than ideal running conditions all weekend. The race director said to the group at the start of the 6 hour “I’ll be honest, most of you aren’t going to hit 50k. You’ll find out why real soon.” All that being said, I’ll be doubling the running time to 12 hours in May for another event with this same race series. I am prepared to get wrecked.
A balance pad is great for those wanting to work on stabilizer muscles. Trying to do some yoga poses on one of those is quite humbling.
Officially 6th out of 46 finishers in the 6-hour. My calculations were correct - 29.11 miles. Pretty stoked about it. Think I'll be gunning for a sub 5:30:00 time for the Zion 50K in April. Might be good enough to get a top 25-30 finish
Ran my first half last summer. Think I'm going to jump into a full this year. I really need to do something besides the I don't know I guess I'll go out and run today program. Hal Higdon? Race is still 6 months away so I'm trying to figure out which program is best to get ready for that. Thinking I'll do the 10k program to get ready for a 10k I'm running in 7 weeks and then jump into the Hal Higdon marathon program afterward. Is that stupid or smart or neither
My Garmin Forerunner 235's battery just started dying quickly all of a sudden It went from lasting a week with running 3 times a week to being on 25% in 36 hours without an activity
Turns out it was defective the entire time I owned it and Garmin is replacing it. I also ran my first relay race today. Was a lot of fun and it's amazing how great my pace was I guess from the adrenaline. However, I made a wrong turn and ended up running 1.5 miles more than I needed to :/
Yeah, but it was embarrassing. I was just so pumped from my pace and I had just passed two people and was on top of the world. Luckily it was a one-day event to gear up for the big two-day relay next month.
Just ordered a pair of Altra Escalante 1.5s. Hoping to use them on some shorter tempo runs and then use them for the Keys 50 miler in May. Bought the Altra Timp 1.5s for trails and absolutely loved them for the ultra I did a few weeks back. Although right now trying to force myself to take a one week break from runs. My knee was flaring up last week so I’ve been fighting the urge and just doing a mix of stationary bike, incline treadmill, and stairmaster in the gym for cardio to take some heat off my knees. I think it’s just wear and tear/fatigue from the last 2-3 months of going pretty hard and nothing more serious (I hope)
Anyone have any IT band recommendations? My relay race the other weekend has my right IT band acting up. Any suggestions besides foam rolling?
Today was first time in a while that my legs/glutes felt up to running in some time besides the curve treadmill. After I lifted for 90 minutes or so, decided to see how long I could last at 10 mph. Made it to 7 tenths of a mile before I threw in the towel, heart rate was only in the 180s. Lifting and swimming are my current priorities but gonna try and fit in a few days a week of running.
allothersnsused if you're looking for running shoes, this is the thread for you. But biggest piece of advice is go to a local shop, run on a treadmill, and have them fit you. Don't go off random users on the internet who have never seen you walk, run, or know what your body type is.
Oh, I have running shoes that I've been fitted for and that work great (ASICS Gel Nimbus). But they're ugly as sin and what I was looking for in another thread were shoes I could wear when traveling both casually and to run in that wouldn't be awful for 3-4 miles a day or two once a month. When I've been traveling recently, I've had to pack a pair of casual shoes, a pair of dress shoes, and a pair of running shoes and it just gets to be too much for a carry on (obviously I wear one of them, but it still gets to be too much room in the suitcase with 2 pairs of shoes). I want something that I can run in occasionally that looks more like a lifestyle shoe.
Took about a week off from running to give my knees some rest. Mixed in some other cross training instead. Yesterday was my first run back at it and breaking in these Altras. Felt so fucking good. Super light and fast. Got 4.5 miles on them yesterday and going to mix them into my runs over the next month. Hopefully they’ll be just as comfortable and awesome over longer distances
Ahh got it, my mistake. I hope I didn't sound too condescending or anything, I've just seen people recommend some horrible shoes (like Air Max 1s) for running in different threads. If you've been fitted for the Nimbus, the Ghost 11 are super similar and have some toned town colorways that you could run in and wear around. https://www.brooksrunning.com/en_us/brooks-running-shoes-ghost-11-mens/110288.html Spoiler '
My body falls so far out of shape by taking a week or so off. My running schedule has been thrown off because I now play soccer on Sunday and Tuesday nights. Same concept, I just struggle a bit to run around the pitch Tuesday night and then be up for a run the following morning. Gotta devise a new approach.
Guys I’m so down in the dumps about my running life. Made huge gains over the winter, running 3 miles on the treadmill in under 25 minutes, running 3 in under 26 outside. The last 2 weeks my planter fasciitis has been killing me. It’s so bad I only put in 9 miles this week and I’m probably shutting it down for the week. I think planter fasciitis knows when you’re making gains and start to feel like a real runner and then it checks your ego.
The plan is to hit the bike at the gym and look into a Max Trainer M6 with my wife’s bonus in a few weeks. Try to keep my fitness up and my cardio up so I don’t lose all of my gains.
And do you guys consistently get 300-500 miles out of a pair of shoes? I’m right at 300 on my hoka gaviota’s and they maybe some of my foot issues.
I’m at 330 miles at have no meaningful wear on the soles. My last pair I stopped using at 375 because I was approaching a marathon and didn’t want to worry about running with them at 450 or so.
