While I'm not so keen on watches smaller than 40mm, I'm quite the sucker for pilot-style watches with simple faces and large Arabic numerals. Such a clean design that will always look good whether it's business or casual.

Seiko has a major quality control issue with this tier of their watch line. I had to send mine back twice, before they got it right

I saw this beauty on r/watchexchange and then saw asking price of $16,500. Then I went to Watch Finder and saw it was the 2nd cheapest of about 25 different A.Lange and Sohne watches on their site.

I do have a 1967 Seamster that's gonna cost me about $250 to repair and clean, but it's in great condition otherwise and all original parts. I think I could sell for about $750, but the guy who's going to repair says I should keep it since any other newish Omega or similar brand will cost a min $2500.

There are some really nice looking Baume et Mercier watches in the $1000 price range that I may seriously look at too.

I was really debating on 6R vs 4R movement. The QC issue, pushed me to the 6R movement after thinking about it during delivery.

Laco makes some nice pilots at a good price. I have their Type B at 42mm. Unfortunately, there is a little scratch in the mineral. If you pick one up, I hope you find that their bands have gotten better. The stitching is just meh, and the leather isn't exactly plush. I'd personally go with Steinhart over Laco at that price point.

Just tried one on, big mistake.

This is the one, love the fit of the 36mm and classic simplicity of the datejust.

I won’t be buying the exact one I tried on, but it was good to find out I was close on my pricing estimates.

Truly iconic, love them. Too much hype around the “hulk” submariners though. Just keep it classic with the black.

I just can’t wear a watch of that caliber in my day to day. Since it’ll be a special occasion watch, figured I’d go classic and understated.

Black is the way I plan on going, I look at the submariner as being a more of a everyday watch, lower tier of the Rolex brand. I might even wear it scuba diving... no fear here. I’ve been wearing my Apple Watch a lot more lately, put the old Omega on the watch winder...

I’ve read too many articles about how poorly they hold their value. They may have a good product but I’ll never touch them.

That said, if you really like one of their watches, who cares what your resale is?

Yeah that's true. My problem seems like you go from 800-900 to 3k and there isn't much in between. I want a speedmaster but really can't justify that price.

Its the base model, lol. If I had cash like that I would probably wear it, but this would be strictly as an investment or quick sale. And I could at least wear it once and front hard on the watch instagram community.

Yes. I have a moonphase Master's Collection. It was maybe $2500-3K if I remember correctly and I bought it primarily because I thought it looked cool. It's been a decent watch, I don't wear it as much as I thought I would, but I feel like it holds its own in that bottom luxury price point. For the sub-$1,000 it's OK, but I'm not a big quartz fan.

Anyone have experience buying from eLady or other Japanese sellers? Im not worried about fakes since Reddit and Omega forums have vouched for them. They're watches look really nice, but my main concern is the polish. Most people on those forums say the do great work and the polish isn't noticeable but didn't know if any of you had bought anything.

You can get some really great prices and no tax, shipping or duty. I'm thinking of getting a Speedmaster Date at about $1250 and seeing if I can gradually work my up to my Grail Omega - either Moonwatch, 57, or Seamaster Aqua Terra.

I went to their boutique on Bond St. in London and just leered at this tourbillon like I was at a peep show.

There was also a gorgeous moonphase at about £80K that seemed reasonable, all things considered. I love their more classic look over the Richard Mille monstrosities at that six figure price point.

Versatile diver, 1 watch that looks nice enough to pull off in most situations. I’m not getting a submariner but something a step below. I have Apple Watch and Fitbit I wear a lot. Something that people recognize as a nice to decent watch from 10 feet away but doesn’t cost 5-10k.

How about an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean? A beautiful well recognized diver with a great Caliber 8800 movement with a 55+ hour power reserve. It can be worn in stainless steel or dressed up on a leather band. The one I used to own I often wore it with a rubber band for comfort. Its not a chronometer so a little more practical for daily wear and allows it to be dressed up. The 39.5mm face is the perfect daily watch size imo. They can be had for about 3k if you look hard enough, probably less preowned.

Couple thoughts incoming, really just need to pick something that you like and not worry too much about about what others think of it (and go Longines if you love one of their watches... take advantage of their depreciation and buy it pre-owned.):

    1. Hamilton X-Patrol (slightly larger, like a 42mm)
    2. +1 for Tiger Tiger Woods Y'all suggesting the Omega Seamaster. So many good versions of that watch (Cosmic, De Ville, Geneve, Constellation...)
    3. Marathon GSAR Diver (lesser known but fantastic quality military diver.)

Speaking of amazing wedding gifts, I don’t mean to brag, but...

Me: hey babe, what’s the $38 charge at Costco?
Babe: Uh... shopping? Just label it shopping.

Love the seamaster. Probably just need to save up for that. It's funny I was watching a video from some jeweler on the Longines I wanted. Guy was saying it's fine for the price, but you should probably just get a submariner cause it's better. Not really acknowledging the 10k price bump at all.
