Now that the Saudis have nuclear secrets, they are probably going to get their Uranium from Russia, given that Hillary approved the sale of 20% of the US uranium supply in the Uranium One deal. Both sides (Probably an actual discussion I’ll have visiting family this Easter if this blows up)
Gonna say this here because ignorance and race are always tangentially related to politics. Was listening to one of the leading hip hop stations in the metro area this AM, and they had a question about men treating women differently depending on if their hair is short, straight, had a weave etc. Mostly black men and women calling in with diff takes and preferences. One black woman called in saying she dates white dudes, and her bf prefers her hair straight. Even before she mentioned his preference there were disapproving or disagreeing noises. And then “that’s what happens when you date out of your vibe” commentary, in spite of other black men calling and saying they prefer hair a certain way. Honestly, I found their reactions pretty off putting because they sounded so douchie and ignorant. All I could think of was how fucking ignorant I’d find it if white hosts on another program began making innuendos about dating outside of your race if you’re white and dating a person of color. I’ve dated ethnic women before and have dealt with very few ignorant comments, but it only really takes one or two to make you feel humanity is full of shit heads. The station is pretty woke and encourages political participation, so it’s disappointing their AM hosts speaking so flippantly about racial tropes.
Far too often these Internal Ombudsman dont really call Balls + Strikes and just occupy the slot before the Sunday Shows promoting the Network
For what its worth in an interview on TYT today Sanders said if he won the nomination he'd be looking for a younger female to be his VP. Maybe Stacey Abrams?
Yes. I think that’d be a very good choice. I think there will be a male/female ticket regardless of who wins the nom.
people really dont understand income taxes, plus basically everyone pays income tax wealth tax is the easiest way to target the rich specifically
It’s a lot harder for the government than taxing a transaction, it’s asking for avoidance techniques, it is inefficient and imposes transaction costs that wouldn’t otherwise be incurred, and it will face a constitutional challenge on day 1 that’s at least close to a toss-up with this Supreme Court
No they’re talking about taxing someone at the end of the year based on their net worth. It would be in addition to income taxes
Thank you Also it would be much easier to create a negative narrative about this tax as one that’s punitive because you’re repeatedly taxing the same income, liquidity issues it could cause, etc Just use the mechanism we already have and raise the rates
I mean sure I was thinking the disagreement was from a philosophical standpoint. The tax avoidance portion from accountant input seems oversold if IRS is well funded and reporting standards continue to raise. Not to mention I give zero shits about people making the argument that "the rich will find a way out", especially from a centrist perspective. Constitutional challenge sure, can't decide to dodge a right wing court just trying to undercut progressive ideals ooooorrr that leads you to realize it's a partisan sham branch and work accordingly, especially when the constitutionality seems largely solid except in partisan forms. I assume transaction costs is regarding forcing liquidity, which, worlds smallest violin.
Why should the super rich have their wealth be largely exempt from wealth taxes that are functionally imposed on everyone who lives like the majority in property taxes? Also, team both.
Wow thanks Alaska. I’m sure those caravans are going to be pissed they can’t walk all the way to Anchorage.
If you can get $100 from a billionaire one way at a cost of $25 to the government or $100 from that same billionaire at a cost of $50, why on earth would you choose the second option?
It's philosophical, stagnant wealth much like stagnant property should be taxed to promote positive usage or liquidation for someone else to do so.
It will cost a lot more money for the IRS to tax wealth (and enforce that tax) than it would for them to tax and enforce income or capital gains or any other transfer of money
It's also about targeting the concentration of wealth. Any variation of an income tax is small potatoes for people like the Waltons I still favor the policy of taking their heads or 90% of their net worth but I guess we are trying to be civil
Do it all. I don't like giving positive incentive for the obfuscation tactics regarding wealth in this country that we've allowed to be propagated largely through the impetus of the wealthy.
This is where our normative disagreement kicks in. I think it’s the purpose of government to provide for the welfare of all of its people, not to punish people for being rich. By all means, tax the rich more to support programs for the rest of the country, but do it efficiently.
I disagree that it's punishment, many of the countries we should be striving to be have similar taxes. It also allows for appropriate taxation for the wealthy who have small taxable income under the current structure. Until the rate of growth and capital accumulation even out this is required to stem the tide of inequality. The growth produced from the negative reinforcement on wealth stagnation would likely be significant (if we were republicans we'd claim it'd be extraordinary). The fear of avoidance is also lessened due to, we're the US and can track your money everywhere, modern reporting and tech capabilities also make me a little hesitant to write off that it'll be incredibly expensive to track when the wealthy are actively trying to commit fraud.
Warren claimned to me more native than she was...oh God no Harris was tough on crime as a Prosecutor...the nerve Booker was once tied to big Pharma...fuck him Klobuchar was mean to her staffers...welp, she's out Gillibrand ate chicken with a fork...what's wrong with her? Bernie has been criticized for not beinb sympathetic to women and other races...a man can change. Thank God this board is so tough on white, male privilege.
I feel like it's only idiots and trolls writing off Warren for the native thing I haven't even seen the stuff about Klobuchar and Gillibrand beyond that the chicken thing happened
And merely characterizing Harris as "tough on crime" is a little disingenuous, no? She used her power to harass the parents of children who were missing school, among other things
I think they partly don't understand the tax system and think they'll have to pay higher taxes on their entire salary, and partly because they see somebody with a bajillion dollars and think they should give some of that up.
