And we’re going to have a QB on a rookie contract. We’ve drafted so bad, we can’t give up the people we have drafted well. X is going to be one of the best corners in the league, Anythi g you draft with that first isn’t likely to be as good as he is. Flores with the patriots has been a heavy man team too, so I would think Howard is a huge asset, and one of the few we have
because by the time we are good again (3-4 years) he will almost be 30 and how many corners do you see still be Pro Bowlers by the time 30 hits? Not very many. Plus he wants to be the highest paid CB in the league which is silly for a sorry roster to have the highest paid CB. This also gives us an extra 1st round pick (allegedly) and with our horrendous drafting in the past decade we need as many chances as possible to "hit" on our high draft picks. You don't really "build around" a cornerback. Look at mostly ALL of the best run organizations and what they do drafting. Patriots have multiple high round picks every year. Browns are now good again because of their endless supply of high picks. Chiefs as well, etc.....
I really like X and don't want to trade him but a 1st round offer for a rebuilding team who needs as many top picks as possible seems too tempting
Yea, I'm on the trade Howard bandwagon. He's really fucking good, but like has already been said, CBs are like RBs, they hit 30 and decline quickly. Look at Richard Sherman. Both just hit 30 and are nowhere near as feared as they were a couple years ago. If you can get a first in the 10-19 range, you jump on it.
Please don't trade Howard. I am sick and tired of letting the few draft picks we actually strike gold on walk or trade them. Seems to always happen- Landry, Vernon, Ajayi, Vontae Davis, shit even L. Miller and Clay even though it was a good move to let those guys go considering what they got. We have to spend the money on somebody, why not a top flight player at a premium position? He's only 26, he's got 3-5 years of great football in him before a decline, and that's probably the term of the contract. I've just always been of the belief that you retain your most talented players, especially at premium position, and especially if he's come up through your system and you drafted him. We always seem to let our most talented draft picks leave because we don't want to pay market price, and then turn around and give that money to far shittier players from other teams that are allowed to leave for a reason. You got to spend the money on someone, I'm totally OK on spending it on somebody like X. We will fuck up any draft picks we get for him or whatever cast off we bring in to replace him. We have time and again let our talent walk or traded them, how bout we try to retain and build on the talent we have for once? Pay the people who deserve to be paid... we can save money by cutting the MULTIPLE players that don't deserve it over the next year or two.
And of all the player I've named, imo maybe only Vernon deserved to be paid as much or more, based on his play, than X. Dude is a stud. I feel like having a lockdown corner is one of the hardest and most valuable positions to acquire (the other two QB and elite pass rusher), and we have one in his prime, and we're gonna let him go? Man hell naw
This is all hypothetical we don’t even know how Flores wants to manage the roster It would be lazy to just assume he wants it way belichick does and is against paying big contracts
When we were supposedly "going for it"? Sure, keep him. But he has already said he wants to be the highest paid corner in the league. You really want to have the highest paid CB in the league when we could get a 1st round pick and improve the team for the future faster than to keep him on a 3-13 team but still have a good CB? I understand what you mean but now that we are actually doing a full rebuild, this is the fastest way to do that. Not keep a highly paid CB
Yes I would rather have an All-Pro CB than a first round draft pick. Even two first round draft picks. Because a bird in hand is worth two in the bush to me, and I like I said I have zero confidence we could draft a player, or even two, that would come close to the player that X is. Like I said, we have to spend the money on somebody and I'm totally fine doing it with someone like him. After next season we really won't be in that bad shape money wise, and we can save the money in other ways by cutting players that we've wasted money on that are far worse than him. Again, I just want to keep and build on the foundation players that we actually have for once.
But we won't be any good next year or in 2020. Dont you notice how valuable multiple top draft picks are to all these good franchises? They treat them like gold. So again, we wont be good till hes just about 30 which doesnt bode well for a CB who needs his speed, and we also need a ton of chances to "hit" on as many top young draft picks/players as possible
We don't know when we will be good or how long the rebuild will take. If we get a good QB it could be much quicker. Yes, some organizations do well with multiple first rounders. Some are like the Browns, we have had firsts forever and they still did shit. Finally had some movement this year after getting a QB. Just because you add some picks doesn't mean you are going to get a great player, especially if you're the Dolphins. I just think if you're Flores, you pick out the few players we have on our roster as your core and you build around them, especially the young guys- Minkah, Tunsil, X, Drake, and personally I would choose James but that's debatable. Get what you can for the other players but I don't know how you can say we get better, either in the short term or the long term, by getting rid of those kind of guys. Even for a first rounder. I have zero problem spending money on the players that are worth it, that's not what gets us in trouble. I understand what you're saying and it makes some sense but like I said we've tried the "don't pay our own big bucks" model for the last decade and it doesn't work. Yes the best teams covet draft picks but they also don't let their best young building blocks get away.
It’s entirely likely a first we get for Howard is never good at all, let alone as good as Howard. Front load that contract, build around him, and still have 2-3 years on the back end of his deal where he is playing at a high level and we are competitive. Our QB is going to be on a rookie deal the entire length of this contract for Howard so who cares about the money anyways? Reshad Jones, tannehill, wake, and many other big contracts are going to come off the books. Who cares about how much he wants right now?
Loser blood saying our picks will always suck since our last decade has sucked. It won't be this bad forever. Eventually we will get it right, and why not get as many picks as possible to have the most chances Keeping a highly paid CB on a 3-13 team is not the way to start the rebuild imo. You trade guys a year too early than a year too late. Look at the Patriots, they traded Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins when they were in their prime (and still are) and got premium picks and still win super bowls. Cmon fellas
It’s not even saying that the pick will suck, it’s that Howard is the caliber of player that it is unlikely you are going to get someone who is going to end up top 5 at their position. I’m not saying his value is Kalil Mack’s, but a 26 year old ascending player that’s as good as he is shouldn’t walk out the door for just a first. The probability so is so low we could could get a similar player, regardless of draft history
Why the hell would we cut Amendola? Base Salary is $5,950,000 and has a cap hit of $6 million. We have to pay 6 million no matter if hes on the team or not unless we are just tanking, in that case im all for it
Was he? Kolton Miller, Conley, Karl Joseph were his last 3 1st rounders and aren’t all 3 disappointments so far? He did have cooper, Mack in back to back years
I would look more to the last 3 first rounders and not the Mack pick, everybody knew he was an all-pro in the making
Meh. I figure Flores will have substantial input on the defense anyway so DC isn’t that big of an issue for me.
Tough because he is still only 26 and at a premium position but fuck I don't think he is worth nearly that much and is only average
I bet he will get about 9-9.5 per year. Sucks to have to pay that, but that's the market and imo it's better than the alternative. If we had a better, more settled line I'd be more OK with moving on but with how terrible it is, I think you have to keep him.
Give James 9-9.5 mil a year but trade Howard because he’s going to want $15mil... fuck outta here with that
