I just noticed that if you zoom in on the first picture it shows he converted his garage into a (probably) illegal room. So he responded to a legal notice with a nice photo of that.

Would a storage closet be a “living area?”

Who knows, but in Florida if you're going to use it for anything other than a garage you have to (at minimum) raise the sub floor.. you know how the rains are here.

Just amazing that he responds to a legal notice complaining about lack of parking space with a picture showing his garage is unusable

I’m only asking because he may be allowed to build a wall (MAGA!) in the garage in effort for more storage. Anyway, these ppl are idiots, but no cars on the street overnight is a tad nazi’esque. Keep us updated.

My city requires a 1 car garage for every residence. It helps with reducing on street parking...

That seems reasonable. This is a gated community I’m guessing though. There is nothing going on. Cars on the street?? Oh the horror.

my neighbor is a truck driver who just bought his own rig and went into business for himself, so at night he parks his truck in the middle of our cul de sac. Nobody complains because he's a good guy and we know he's just starting out but it makes me smile to think of how apoplectic an HOA would get over that.

I'll get one when I get home if it's still light out. We do have a larger than normal cul de sac (oval rather than circle; I know it's .08 miles around because my OCD mind can't accept my runs ending on anything but a tenth of a mile so I usually do a couple of laps at the end) so it's not a problem but I know how petty HOA's can be.

They’re going to parking permits in my neighborhood. The 2 or 3 bedroom apartments and condos nearby park their vehicles on the street. My neighbors use garbage cans to save parking spots in front of their homes.

First and foremost, fuck an HOA, they are the worst. Second, can't imagine what I would do with all my shit if I didn't have a basement and needed to use my garage to store everything.

Cars being parked on the street is something I can't wrap my head around people caring about beyond it being a way for them to control their neighbors in some small petty way

People will get mad because they can't back out of their driveway at 60 mph when there's a car parked on the other side. They'll get steamed because 20% of their lane is momentarily occupied by a van that is not of their fancy. They'll get mad if garbage gets caught by the tires when it rains and winds up in their yard instead.

Only time I've ever cared is when I'd finally have time on a weekend to mow the yard and my next-door neighbor's entire church congregation would park in front of my house. Finally, one day, I just took a big sigh, wondered WWJD, and then mowed it anyway, keeping the cars to my left (and the chute to my right.) This only went on for a month or so.

I hadn't thought about it obstructing storm drains. That actually makes some sense, although it seems pretty minor. Maybe that's just because it rains enough here that it doesn't really matter.

My wife stopped working for medical reasons in November, and since then has put all of her effort into redecorating our house and getting rid of stuff we don't need. It's amazing how easy it is to get rid of things because people will buy anything. She posts the most random shit on OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace and the offers come pouring in. She counted a cash a few weeks ago and she's made more than $2k so far. She posted a cheap plastic broom she kept in her classroom for $7 and within an hour someone had come by to pick it up. In the evenings/weekends people are constantly coming by to pick things up.

Cliffs: sell your junk. People want it.

I have a 3 car garage, currently in the 3rd: riding lawn more, traeger grill/smoker, regular grill, snow blower, patio furniture, various lawn tools. Granted in Florida a lot of that stuff doesn't need to be stored in the garage I imagine, but when you start adding it all up, there is a lot of stuff that is stored in the garage, and I didnt even get into the outside toys for the kids.

Exactly the same here. We had accumulated all this junk like people do and started getting rid of it a couple years ago. My wife made so much money on junk. We remodeled our basement and took away all but two tiny areas for stuff. People fill up the space they have so we made less space. It’s amazing and freeing.

I also do these things. If it’s organized appropriately and things that aren’t necessary to keep are sold, you can still fit cars in there. I have a 3 car garage and have always been able to figure out how to fit 3 cars in there and I have a giant chest freezer in there. There’s no good excuse to turn a garage into a storage shed.

you'd be surprised. We had some empty wine bottles as part of the decorations on top of our kitchen cabinets for years, and before tossing them in the recycling bin she posted them. Some lady gave us $5 for them.

If it's something tiny my wife just puts it out on the porch and tells the person to leave money under the mat. Doesn't give them the address until they give a pickup time. We've never had anyone stiff us and, if they did, who gives a shit because it's $5. And nobody ever knows when we're home or not.

Usually the in-person interaction is 10 seconds. Nobody wants to chit chat they just hand you money, you hand them thing, and then you close the door. Usually the only hassle is people trying to negotiate but that's it. And for me it's a bit of an annoyance since she doesn't have a Facebook acct she uses mine to post stuff, so I'll be in meetings and the notifications start going crazy on my iPad about candlesticks or whatever.

And donate to goodwill. Even faster, and you can do it in bulk.

A buddy of mine shared the "30 day challenge" with me. You can start with a 7 day challenge or a 14 day challenge.

Day 0: Set aside a big box or basket (you could use your laundry bin, too)
Day 1: identify one thing you could live w/o, and put in the bin. This is something you will sell, donate or throwaway.
Day 2: do the same, but instead 2 things
    ....
Day 30: the same, but for 30 (!!) yes, 30 things.

It is quite liberating and ultimately peaceful.

My dad is a hoarder, and when I told him about it, He quickly responded that he would qualify for the "365 day challenge"

Also, another helpful thing for me, not explicitly because I will buy, but is to unsubscribe from eCommerce sites and turn off notifications for any app that pushes notifications randomly.

I use slickdeals.net app but in Android, I can mute the app so my phone doesn't vibrate or make a sound. /lifehack

Deuce and I know a girl that makes candles in old wine bottles. He gave her a shit ton of them from his wedding and asked that she make one into one of her candles for him to commemorate it. She did, but charged him full retail for it. I laugh out loud every time I think of it because it was such an unbelievably shameless move.

I always thought it would be great to have an inside storage room in a house. Like an out of the way room that is air conditioned and just like any other room, but just to store stuff. When I built a house a few years ago, I had that added to the design (with a closet so it qualifies as a bedroom for resale). It’s the greatest thing ever. No more shit piled in closets, easy access and designed with that in mind with built in storage shelves, drawers, bins, etc.

we have a two car garage. We use half the garage to store things and my wife parks on the other side. I park my car in the driveway behind the side that is occupied with shit. works well for us.

we have some things we have to keep in the garage, and unfortunately we have agreed to store some furniture for her dad as he goes through a divorce.

I do the same thing, minus the last part. But what ultimately led to this is my truck wont' fit in the garage, so shit began to pile up and before you knew it, the whole side of the garage was a new storage space. Mostly kids bikes, my large walk-behind mower, coolers, etc. Next house, my truck will fit in the garage, not having this happen again (who am I kidding though).

Why have a garage, a place that is specifically constructed to hold vehicles, if you fill it with shit and don't put your cars there? I don't mean a little stuff in the garage. I mean like storage space type filling a garage where you can't even park one vehicle. If you do that shit you're a hoarder and need to reexamine your life.
