The slab quest is off to a nice start. I don't know if I'm suppose to keep the serial numbers private or what so I mspainted that shit.
Nice, are you late 30s/early 40s? I’m 42 and a lot of those cards were the ones I desired most during my prime collecting days of my childhood. I was a huge Kirby Puckett fan and collector (mom is from twin cities), in addition to Astros stuff. I’ve been tempted to get a lot of my stuff graded, just not sure if it’s worth the cost and time right now, may pick up a few graded items on eBay first
I think I'm 43, might be 44. Darryl Strawberry was my first love. Followed M's and Astros, 'stros being my national league team back then. Still love them today but MLB fucked me over moving them into the same division, I'll never be 'stros over M's though. Young me never had the funds in the mid 80's for Puckett, Clemens, Gooden rookies. It took everything I had to obtain a Strawberry card back then.
Now that I think of it—and after reading that first sentence—I just realized that I’m not 42 yet, will be in mid-April ;) And I hear ya about lacking funds back then. My biggest moment as a collector was finally scoring an 84 fleer update Kirby Puckett which I still have today, although it seems like it’s only worth like $75 now compared to over $200 then. And yeah, I liked strawberry then, too, remember the 84 cards being hard for me to get but finally got a topps at least. I think there may have been an 83 topps traded or other update before that, as well
Purchases from the last few days. More convenient to just buy pre-graded ones than send a bunch of stuff in and wait a month or two to get them back. I'll probably send some of my own stuff in but I'm in no hurry and will likely start setting stuff aside I find upstairs that I wanted graded until I get 50 or 100 to send in at once.
Always wanted that McGwire USA card. Loved that dude. Lost a Ken Griffey Jr rookie card when his cousin was supposed to get it signed and I never got it back. Asshole
11 year old me once mailed a 1992-93 Topps Gold Shaq rookie to the Orlando Magic for an autograph. Stopped following the NBA about a year later.
Picked up more slabs today, not sure it's enough to warrant a photo. Some of them I have already, some are triples at this point. Thurman Munson 1970 Topps Rookie 7.5 (Beckett) Fuck The Yankees Barry Bonds 1986 Fleer Update Rookie 9.5 (Beckett) Tony Gwynn 1983 Topps Rookie 9 (PSA) Jose Canseco 1986 Donruss Rookie 9 (PSA) Bruce Sutter 1977 Topps Rookie 8 (PSA) Vida Blue 1970 Topps Rookie 7 (PSA) Darryl Strawberry 1983 Topps Traded Rookie 9 (PSA) Wade Boggs 1983 Fleer Rookie 9 (PSA)
I still have the 1983 Topps Traded Strawberry rookie in an album I put together in 1986 or so. It’s a time capsule.
You're killing me smalls. Dups down below, Pucketts to the right since I screwed up my first photos from the other day when I didn't realize I had 4 of them that should have been photo'd together.
I just realized I need some Big Hurt. If you guys need any graded cards off ebay I'd suggest you act now before I start loading my cart.
I'd just want Chipper plus the big 3. Dale Murphy is an incredibly easy set to get for his career as well.
Anyone tried building a 86-87 Fleer basketball set? I wanted to stay away from other sports but I use to open those packs as a kid and the look of those cards brings me so much happiness. Thinking about trying to do a PSA 9 set. Doing it in 10's seems like a waste of money. Have you guys built any graded sets? I use to open a lot of 1986 topps football but those cards are bordering 1986 topps baseball ugly.
Between all the slabs you're buying and all the boxes you've broken, you're my new favorite poster. To some other posters who are looking for good slabs with fair prices, 4sharpcorners is a reputable eBay seller with fair prices. I have no affiliation with him but have bought from him in the past and have been satisfied.
I've purchased from them recently and they sent me a spam mail, if you order from their site you get 15% off (until 3/3) plus free shipping over $150. I quickly found $300+ worth of garbage to order to take advantage of this. And when I say garbage I mean it, we're talking rookies of Jimmy Key, Mark Langston, Danny Tartabull, Vince Coleman, Alvin Davis, Dennis Martinez, Julio Franco, etc.
Here's the complete order. Bit embarrassed by the Jack Morris rookie. I now see I ended up with a 5th Donruss Puckett. There's something about that card I can't seem to resist.
I'm gonna need your guys' top 5 iconic baseball cards of the 80's. You don't have to own them, or have owned them, just the 5 cards that you feel were influential or iconic during that period. 1. 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. 2. 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly 3. 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco 4. 1985 Fleer Roger Clemens 5. 1989 Fleer Bill Ripken Hate to burn a spot on Bill but when that card came out and was discovered it was chaos.
Hmm in no particular order here were the biggies when I was younger that we all drooled over. 1. 1989 upper deck Ken Griffey Jr 2. 1980 topps Rickey Henderson 3. 1986 donruss Jose Canseco 4. 1985 topps Mark McGwire (team USA card) 5. 1987 Fleer Barry Bonds Honorable mention but technically not 80s: 1990 leaf Frank thomas.
Bought a blaster box of that new topps heritage. Got a Ohtani refractor. Pretty cool looking. Don't think I'll buy a bunch of it though
Yeah, it was definitely one of the iconic cards of the era but for my list I was thinking more about cards that were awe worthy and highly desired because of both value and the player. When I was younger we knew it was super rare and expensive but didn't care too much because it was Billy fucking Ripken.
Wanted to get your input on the card below. Seller is saying it would grade around a 5 or 6 and is a grey back. Thoughts on value? TIA.
Pretty uneventful day, got a couple slabs in the mail. Was bored enough to go upstairs and open some old wax that has been sitting around for a couple decades. Was hoping for a Fuck Face Ripken but when I finally got a Ripken in box #2 it was the black box. Garbage set, got a couple R. Johnson rookies but that's it. Slabs were: 1976 Topps Ron Guidry RC PSA 7 (yankee scum) 1986 Donruss Harold Reynolds RC PSA 10 (I know he's hated in the MLB thread but he's seriously one of the nicest guys you'll find) 1983 Topps Traded Darryl Strawberry RC PSA 10 (my 3rd or 4th of these) 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco RC BGS 9.50 (4th one of these) 1983 Fleer Ryne Sandberg RC BGS 9 (don't know why I keep buying these, always felt he was overrated) 1981 Topps Tim Raines RC (ex-Expos get no respect)
Still trying to figure out if I want to go PSA 9 or BGS 9.5 for the 86-87 Fleer set. Decided to ebay search some of the rookies in that set and the first thing I come across is this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Fleer...bdZxl:sc:USPSFirstClass!98661!US!-1:rk:3:pf:0 Is that red pen at the bottom covering up flaking along the edge and beat up bottom corners?
From guns to sports cards. Living the goddamned dream, man. Question for any of you... Do people purposely put cards at exorbitant prices up on eBay hoping someone misclicks or something? Shaq’s rookie year I made a concerted effort to buy every one of his rookie cards, special inserts, even the Hostess cupcake, McDonald’s, special brand sets they’d make back then... if it was a rookie card I got it. I even kept the redemption cards for Upper Deck. This thread got me curious and my google research tells me there’s nothing that special/valuable amongst my collection, even the branded ones I thought would be rare, but on eBay I see some crazy prices for what appear to be run of the mill Shaq rookie cards.
