For example a man who “feels like he is a woman” can compete as a female against other women. The IOC recently ruled in favor of this. What are your thoughts?

Poll needs a “Don’t care the Olympics suck” option. I’d have chose that one.

This might be the wrong way to look at it but I think women that have transitoned to men should be allowed to compete.

But men that have transitioned to women should not be allowed.

How big of a problem is this. How many devious people out there that would go to the trouble of changing their entire gender to try and get over on the system. It could happen but people like Charlie Kirk's mind always goes to this nefarious scenario when I suspect the reality is you're talking mostly about people that did this for legitimate health reasons. They're always trying to play up some boogeyman that isn't there like the transgender pervert in the bathroom

The Caster Semenya case was what kind of what kicked it all off with insanity, but when people learned she's (probably) intersex it wasn't as easy to put a line in the sand.

Now she's fighting a rule that says women who naturally produce higher levels of testosterone must take suppression drugs to compete. (Setting aside that the rule initiated clearly is targeting her specifically as it's only for certain running events)

Yeah, heard an NPR on this. The certain events thing came from a study of times/performance where levels of testosterone showed a statistical difference. Basically more testosterone can help in short events by 1 to 2 percent but not really in the longer ones.

It was put in place because Dutee Chand won her appeal so the IOC and IAAF had to have some sort of scientific data that said it made a difference. That was the best they could come up with.

So instead of men/women, create three divisions -- low testosterone, normal range male testosterone, and roid users?

I think the idea that people would fake it is absurd. But, it does seem more prevalent than I would have thought.

I feel socially irresponsible to support people harming themselves for my amusement. (Yes I appreciate the irony with being a football fan.) You might say they take they money, they made the choice, but creating the temptation seems irresponsible to me because of course people are gonna do it if huge amounts of money is on the line -- it's not much of a choice at that point but human nature. I don't know much about the actual health risks of steroids, HGH etc though so was just asking

Well, if I was from an area where there wasn't a lot of hope but I could make the Olympics as a female and dramatically improve the lives of myself and my family it would be a thought. When I lived in Thailand my gf had a kahtoi (ladyboy) friend. Was from a dirt poor village in Laos. Was working as prostitute near Phuket and making enough money to support her whole extended family. Was a business decision though I'm sure it was more complex then that inside her head.

It’s the same risks they take drinking alcohol, driving a car, whatever. If they want to take the risk to try and be better at their job then go for it. Just because they take them it’s not some guarantee that their going to be good.

I’ve always thought that in everything except contact sports (mma, boxing) they might be okay. In those in particular the risk to the opponent is too great.

How so? Either of those things can have negative consequences, the same with steroid use. Not a great example but still. It’s like that movie with Bradley Cooper and the smart pill.

Most athletes use them for the recovery time. You can go harder training day after day because your body recovers at a faster rate.

Right but I mean there's a certain chance in a million that you get killed in a car, or from drinking, or from steroids. I suspect that the three differ. There's some risk inherent in everything. I'm saying I'd only feel comfortable with sports legalizing steroid use if the risk to users was below a certain level.

If you told people fight a live tiger for $10 million some people would do it. If you offer two bums $10 to fistfight they might do it. That's why I don't buy the "they took the money, they are ok with the risk" thing. There's a lot of situations where it's exploitative even if the participant "willingly chose." As a fan I'm not comfortable sanctioning certain stuff with my money.

Just talking about what I personally prefer morally; I guess if sports went that direction I'd probably watch up to a point. Seems like it could become grotesque though

Anyone should be able to compete with the males. All transgendered athletes should be banned from the female category, though. Only way to keep it fair.

Unless they fall into the same testosterone range as the other female competitors due to hormone therapy. If a transgender has the same level of test as their female competitors what is the difference? And can say “the years they spent training with the higher level” which is the same as saying the female competitor could juice the whole time as long as she can pass the test level, which is what usually happens. They just time it out so they don’t pop hot.

Without knowing the first thing about it, are you able to bring your hormone levels into approved “range” relatively close to an event? Or is there testing that happens frequently leading up to the event that ensures they’ve been in a steady approved ranged during their training?

Its simply time to force men, women, and everything in between to all compete against each other. If we dont we are reinforcing the idea that all genders arent made equal and of course they are all equal.
