I saw James Blake at Terminal 5 on Monday.

Really good show but people were hanging out behind the bar downstairs just talking instead of watching. If you want to go to a bar and chat maybe don’t come to the show.

I am really old. My almost 17 year old daughter went to see Kooks and Barns Courtney last night at Terminal 5 in NYC with friends. At least we share similar taste in music.

I hate it. One of the worst venues in NY, but if a band I like is only playing there I will go.

It's also a place I am a little scared of if anything were to happen like a fire or a terrorist event as it is really hard to get out of and it holds a lot of people.

Fortunately Brooklyn Steel has really drawn a lot more of the bigger acts since it opened. I still prefer the 400-1000 person venues much better.

I love Mercury Lounge because of how intimate it is. You mostly get bands with one or two albums here. I've seen some pretty fun bands there...Drums, Wu Lyf, Fanfarlo, Jr Jr, and Foxygen. Bowery and Music Hall of Williamsburg are intimate on a different scale (3 solid albums usually) but the perfect venues for bands who have a name for themselves but aren't the biggest out there. The problem though is since Brooklyn Steel came to town, they are bringing in a lot of the bands that would have played at Bowery and MHW. I enjoy going to shows at Forrest Hills and the Propsect Park Bandshell in the Summer, because they have a mini festival feel to them. They also have great food. Then there are venues like Brooklyn Bowl that if they get a good band are great to go to, because the food is excellent and the floor area to watch is surprisingly good. There are other small venues similar to Mercury Lounge like the Knitting Factory in Williamsburg that could be fun.

In general the Bowery Presents owns the NY area so they can get whatever acts they want in the sub stadium capacity shows and put them where they want. Most of there venues are solid. T5 is definitely the worst.

If you are in NY, this is the best place to find out who is playing where...

I only went there once and I recall it being super cool how it was a gallery also. I think I saw DiiV and Cloud Nothings, but I recall being right in front of the stage. It closed in 2014.

Yeah I saw where they are on Singlelock now.

I believe that SLR are putting out good music but there seems to be a waiting list for releasing the albums once they get recorded.

I've gotten to know quite a few of the artists through my friends. Some have actually started recording new stuff before the previous albums were even released. I believe that it's a marketing money issue.

I've been busy lately and haven't talked with any of those folks in a while. I know that The Pollies released their new album through Bandcamp. Probably because of the issues that I posted above.

Reminds me of one of my top 5 artists: Nina Nastasia.

I can think of few singers whose discography is better despite being criminally under-recognized. Achingly beautiful Gothic Americana. It's no wonder that when asked in a Reddit AMA to list the favorite albums that he's produced, the very artist that Steve Albini (Nirvana, Magnolia Electric Co, Joanna Newsom, Pixies, and countless others) listed was Nastasia. The Blackened Air will forever be one of my "island albums."

This song is so good. I love that they are taking a new approach by adding female voices. Seeing them again in June.

The new album will also feature several guest vocalists, including Gail Ann Dorsey, Sharon Van Etten, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Lisa Hannigan, Mina Tindle and more. Lead singer Matt Berninger comments on this saying "Yes, there are a lot of women singing on this, but it wasn't because, 'Oh, let's have more women's voices... It was more, 'Let's have more of a fabric of people's identities.' It would have been better to have had other male singers, but my ego wouldn't let that happen."
