Dave just wrote a blog on the whole ordeal. Basically said hand up we fucked up. Shouldn’t have kept contacting her after it was clear she wanted no part in working things out and said the $50 gift card was beyond dumb.
I hate twitter and all of the people that think they’re Twitter famous to start with but any time I see some asshole start something like ‘wow. thread’ I know it’s going to be dumb as fuck and make me hate them for thinking they are important and whoever or whatever wronged them is the end of the world. No arguing whoever at barstool initiated the dms and the lol $50 in merch offer is a dumbass but who cares about some stupid vid getting reposted without credit on twitter.
Little brain: barstool looks like shit over this controversy Big brain: 1.5 days of content and counting
There’s been a large angry mob after fuck jerry recently for doing nearly the same thing. I think it’s safe to say some people care.
So she made a video. Barstool posted it and didn’t credit her and she got mad? Welcome to the internet. This is the lamest barstool controversy yet.
Reading Dave’s article, it’s not even that they didn’t give credit. Someone sent them the video and claimed it as their own and allowed barstool to use it. So basically they just credited the wrong person
It was an original video. She had a right to be irritated about it and they did a terrible job negotiating. That said, paying for a copyright infringement is kind of how it works.
I get her specific gripe, they messed up but in like a very corporate moron way. Spare me the “can you believe Barstool did THIS to me”. Let’s turn this around if she had just responded to one of their initial very polite apologetic emails like an adult and said, no the video is mine, please take it down. Then all of the follow up never happens. I’m sure she definitely didn’t intend to draw a ton of attention to herself by letting a situation boil over by her own unwillingness to turn the stove top off...
KFC sounds like an idiot on today’s rundown. Especially in comparison to BC and Feits having the right take on the matter. Him saying badgering someone with offers of money and an apology isn’t harassment. Sure, it isn’t malicious. But the mistake was not just leaving her alone. And it was just creepy.
Guess I worded that poorly. Agree people care but I don’t. These ‘content creators’ and ‘influencers’ are all stealing content from each other all the time.
What did Barstool do to steal her video? What caused all this hoopla? I mean she didn't write that song. She "stole" it. I'm confused and ignorant.
They didn't give credit to her by tagging her account which is standard practice the last year or so. Plus they tagged the chicks account in the post making it seem like they were giving credit to that account, which they weren't trying to do but didn't help.
You still have to credit somebody else's work. The girls from the 2007 video might have a claim against her, and so might Three 6 Mafia. But, Barstool absolutely 100% does not. The prior video doesn't have anything to do with anything from their perspective.
Per Big Cat while they get 1,000 of tips and suggestions of funny videos their policy has been to credit and have a process for verification which wasnt followed. Regardless of who they thought owned the video they did not credit anyone in the video and tagged chicks. The fallout was from the way it was handled after the fact
I searched it on Youtube, they did a calibration around the time the video came out so I don't think they have any issue with her.
For as such a knob that schefter comes off as on tv, he’s been enjoyable and personable in his pmt appearances.
Dave reviewed the place around the corner from me today and said my neighborhood ‘was not as trashy as I thought it’d be’
It’s absolutely, 100% how it should be too. I worked in online media, we implemented a policy to credit the work. You have fair use laws that give a person certain amount of leeway, but it’s incredibly complicated and you run the risk of opening yourself up to a lot of potential problems by not crediting. Fair-use also allows a certain amount of time to use videos/music/etc. but it can get to the point of stealing if you don’t make edits from the original. Long story short, our asshole CEO didn’t actually care about news but just wanted to make money and he overode our entire policy and said ‘we will stop crediting everything.’ This pissed off our newsroom, and me specifically, because I managed this portion of our video editing. He told me he was CEO and to pound sand, so I handed him my resignation letter and grabbed my stuff and left. 3 others followed me that day and 1/2 the newsroom within 2 months. He no longer is CEO and the company is basically non-existent at this point 3.5 years later. The way Barstool handles a lot of this is garbage and they hope their lawyers and money can cover up for potential problems. If they don’t start vetting shit tighter, eventually somebody with bigger pockets could cause issues they believe they are immune to. I guarantee, without knowing shit about their day-to-day operations, this is why they started crediting in the first place.
And the person, from that point, was lazy and shows the verification process wasn’t very stringent. It’s simple, they fucked up, and the people that attacked the chick are hilariously wrong. She doesn’t have to give them anything from that point forward. She was probably pretty fucking accurate about their twitter violations piling up. (Not that I believe Twitter will actually do much of anything, they are there to make money and Barstool brings numbers)
https://www.barstoolsports.com/boston/barstool-pizza-review-krispy-pizza-jersey-citynj Conducted my own internal review just now. Bread is definitely doughey and not crispy, but the crust is extremely crispy. 7.3
The $50 gift card offer was the most transactional lawyer trying to be a litigator moment I’ve ever seen. I’m confident this isn’t the only time they’ve fucked up like this.
The annoying part of any “controversy” is how we always get 5 articles and a tweet from nearly every employee about how great barstool is. Wish they’d just ignore deadspin and let Dave handle it
This is a terrible take. Water boiling over because you leave the stove on is a reasonable expectation. Being harassed because you don't reply to someone is not.
Dave is absolutely part of the problem. Full disclosure, I think he is a dipshit, but he obviously is a smart dude that realized a place and a market area. He also isn’t somebody that understands law. He has money now (they got away with it early because they were small) but with that money means running a tighter ship. It’s the conondrum so many hate that Barstool has to ask, how will they approach it? Sticking your middle-fingers to the air will work for some time, it won’t work forever and your kidding yourself if you believe it will.
The internet is going to implode if a day ever comes where Dave and barstool have to apologize for something really serious.
