Could be. That’s probably the better scenario. But he’s from Florida.

Also it sounds like whatever the problem was is still a problem.

By the way when I said it seems like Dexter Williams I meant it feels like he’s going to be one of the 2 or 3 most explosive players on the team for his entire career and be underutilized because he isn’t a boy scout.

I got ya, just took it another notch. My honest opinion is that he will be a standout this year.

I made the reference because of stepherson. But Austin will be fine I hope

i think that's where the concern regarding the torn acl comes into play. i think maybe Robdog_5 mentioned that when he was discussing him a few weeks ago (or perhaps i read it elsewhere).

some of the latest clips of him practicing with his QB coach shows the knee looks good and he made 1 throw rolling to his right and slings i perfectly downfield for what looks like 30 or 40 yards that his WR caught in stride - incredibly impressive for a kid his age

he looks like the best combination of Wimbush (athleticism assuming he comes back all the way which he should) and Book (accuracy and decision making) and his throwing motion looks so easy and fluid

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — When Tyler Buchner arrived at Notre Dame last summer he carried the drain of cross-country travel with him. A soon-to-be high school sophomore showed for Notre Dame’s Elite Skills Camp after visiting Alabama and Georgia, plus a summer lacrosse tournament, plus a few Ivy League visits. The order of those trips didn’t matter, just that the aspiring quarterback had logged them.

“The last stop was Notre Dame. If I got to Notre Dame, a school I was really interested in, I needed to do well,” Buchner said. “And it was one of those days where I was really feeling it.”

So a quarterback who was committed to Michigan’s lacrosse program and who’d thrown 37 total passes his freshman season at the Bishop’s School in La Jolla, Calif., started working out for offensive coordinator Chip Long and quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees. Even with temperatures into the 90s and a dearth of capable receivers available, Notre Dame couldn’t quite believe what it was seeing.

First, Buchner clocked a 4.63 in the 40-yard dash. Then he threw the routes of Long’s offense, most of the passes going to sophomore prospect Lorenzo Styles Jr., whose father played at Ohio State and in the NFL. Buchner’s arm ran Styles into the ground, the sprinter’s background pushed to its limit. Buchner wanted to throw every pass the coaches wanted to see. That meant Styles had to catch them, go route after go route after go route.

“He was slinging it a little bit,” Styles said. “He throws a really nice ball.”

Long offered Buchner and Styles as they walked off the field. The receiver was a prospect Notre Dame wanted. The quarterback was a prospect Notre Dame believed it needed. And on Friday afternoon, more than eight months and two additional Notre Dame visits later, Buchner went public with a commitment he’d already made privately, giving Long and Rees their first commitment in the 2021 class.

Notre Dame was not alone in running down Buchner the past year, with offers in from Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, USC and UCLA. The Bruins offered Buchner before his freshman year at Bishop’s, convinced by one summer camp without a snap of varsity tape as confirmation. In recruiting, a game of evaluating potential over ability, Buchner satisfied the former so thoroughly that the latter could be assumed. That’s why there’s been a consensus on the 6-foot-2, 203-pound quarterback since his freshman season, one Notre Dame confirmed last summer more than it discovered anything new.

“I sort of knew going into Notre Dame last summer that I’d thrown well the previous week, I was going down a good stretch that month, working out all the time,” Buchner said. “I had confidence going into it. No matter what, I’m confident in what I’m doing. It was no surprise to me.”

Yes, talent is part of this story as Notre Dame made an early move at a position that historically moves early. The Irish have opened the past four classes with a quarterback, going back to freshman Phil Jurkovec. And yet, Buchner’s faith in himself may be as significant as any raw skill, an example of environment mixing with attitude and ability in the right proportions.

Buchner enrolled at the Bishop’s School in the sixth grade, a transplant from the upscale Chicago suburbs with designs on playing college lacrosse, in part because his parents didn’t let him play hockey. With a dad who played football at Colgate and a mom who graduated from Yale, academic marks were assumed. With an older sister headed to UCLA to play beach volleyball and former Irish All-American Shane Walton on staff at Bishop’s, athletic success was not foreign either.

All this helped make Buchner’s recruiting profile almost independent from his lack of actual football experience. At worst, he was a prospect with a high floor, the right personality with the right skills and the right transcripts.

“Ultimately, these coaches didn’t need to see film, they got to see it for themselves,” said Joel Allen, head coach at Bishop’s. “You meet him, shake his hand, look him in the eye, he’s got a 4.0 at one of the top schools in the country. You add all that together with the physical ability, nothing is ever a for sure thing, but this isn’t a risk, this is a kid that’s got his head on straight, who has all the athletic ability. It’s all there.

“They got 90 kids on scholarship, this one doesn’t seem like a stretch.”

Even after Buchner lasted just four plays of his sophomore season, the sentiment still holds.

Tyler Buchner wasn’t going to punt because that’s not what top quarterbacks do on opening drives of the season. Bishop’s was about to go three-and-out, Buchner’s contribution to the pass game a busted screen. But no, he wasn’t going to give up on the first possession of a season he’d been waiting on for almost a year.

As a freshman, Buchner slotted behind senior quarterback Jeffrey Jackson, who set city records for completion percentage while hitting 41 touchdown passes against just three interceptions, good enough to get him to the University of Chicago. Buchner started one game in relief, an exercise in patience as much as beating Cover Four. He led the team in yards per carry and finished second in yards per catch, pitching in at safety, too.

Now, with the quarterback job finally his, Buchner didn’t want to let the feeling go. Doubling as Bishop’s punter on 4th-and-12, Buchner didn’t.

“I got the snap and just watched their guys turn, so I said, ‘Screw it, I’m running this,’ ” Buchner said. “I only had the punt returner to beat, tried to juke him out and then it happened. I knew something was wrong.”

Buchner had torn his left ACL after a 40-yard sprint downfield. A quarterback with a limitless future was now living in a dead-end present, depending on how he wanted to see things. So Buchner hired himself as a volunteer assistant, playing catch off his right leg in pregame and watching games from the sidelines. Eventually he moved up to the coaches’ box, got on a headset and started calling plays. Around the season’s fourth game, Buchner called “Token Sky,” a fake RPO that turned the tight end loose over the middle against Cover Two. It was Buchner’s first touchdown of the year. He just wasn’t on the field for it.

“I learned about myself as a person, and it was almost a blessing,” Buchner said. “One of the physical therapists told me that gifts come in funny packages, so I guess you could see this as a gift.”

Buchner has been back throwing for months, working with private quarterbacks coach Danny Hernandez of Team Dime out of Orange County. Hernandez runs some of his drills at STARS in Anaheim, where former Notre Dame center Sam Mustipher is training for the NFL Draft.

Hernandez gets it, that Buchner has barely played high school football and is coming back from a torn ACL. He understands the questions. But he also watched Notre Dame, USC, Alabama and Georgia breathlessly run down Buchner last spring. When Alabama visited last May and planned to offer in person, Hernandez phoned a friendly contact at Georgia. And then the Bulldogs rushed to beat the Tide to that verbal offer.

“You’re recruiting off of a potential,” Hernandez said. “It’s kind of how it works. There’s a lot of things that happen in recruiting that people don’t like.”

And really, if Nick Saban, Brian Kelly and Kirby Smart believe Buchner is one of the nation’s best quarterback prospects, who’s to argue?

Buchner and Hernandez have worked together for almost two years, dating back to when UCLA offered before Buchner had ever practiced in high school. Coach and quarterback meet weekly, review film, tweak mechanics and push forward. Near the top of Hernandez’s drill work is throwing off platform, passes the coach calls “real life throws” in game situations. For an example, think Ian Book’s touchdown pass to Chase Claypool just before halftime against Stanford last September. Book was flushed right, cut left and then threw across his body to Claypool in the end zone.

Buchner was in the stands that night on an unofficial visit. Maybe it’s just a coincidence that Book played lacrosse in high school and grew up in California, too.

“There are throws Tyler is able to make now, maybe doing it more off his right leg than other guys because he had to, where he really thrives,” Hernandez said. “He’s learning things right away and applying them right away. Very coachable. And then you see his lower half, man, I tell him he’s built like a linebacker.”

If this all seems like a lot for a teenager to process, accepting a scholarship to Notre Dame after starting two high school games at quarterback and suffering a season-ending injury in one of them, it is. The day-to-day of Tyler Buchner is not normal, being talented enough to earn scholarships in two college sports before playing either of them in high school. That Buchner has not turned into the latest robo-quarterback prospect from Southern California may be due to the environment in which he’s done it, at a school where athletic success is cheered, just not at the expense of other varieties.

To explain how Buchner remains a person more than a prospect, Allen talks about a trip back to Notre Dame with Walton, the pair now a decade into working together at Bishop’s. Allen walked campus with the former All-American and Thorpe Finalist who came to Notre Dame to play soccer before walking onto the football team. The reverence was intoxicating, even with Allen old enough to drink it responsibly.

“We could have gotten away with anything walking around Notre Dame,” Allen said. “The praise for that guy was so cool. And that can be really good, but it can be really damaging to a 15-year old or 16-year old kid that thinks he walks on water. Tyler doesn’t have that.

“If he doesn’t wear a tie on Tuesdays, he gets called out like everybody else.”

That will continue during Buchner’s final two seasons, even as the conversation about him shifts from untapped potential to five-star promise. And Buchner is ready for that, maybe even eager for it. He talks regularly with Walton about Notre Dame and what he’ll get into here. And he understands the double takes that come with being the future face of the Irish despite barely playing for the Knights.

“I think about that sometimes. If people are skeptical, I completely understand,” Buchner said. “But if you can play, you can play. There’s not much else to it. Recruiting nowadays, film is not as important. I think a lot of coaches, all they need is to see you throw in person, then they can tell how good of a quarterback you are.”

On that point, everyone agrees. Buchner is excellent.

Notre Dame saw the same thing last summer that Alabama and Georgia saw last spring and that UCLA saw almost two years ago. It’s why 247 Sports already rates Buchner as the nation’s No. 2 pro-style quarterback and No. 49 overall prospect. It’s why Rivals will almost certainly do the same later this spring.

Four plays and a torn ACL didn’t stop Buchner’s story one series into his sophomore season, it just changed it. Notre Dame didn’t have a second thought pushing forward from that moment, hosting Buchner for the Stanford game last season and for Junior Day this winter. Buchner broke down film with Long and Rees on that visit.

“I visited a ton of schools, and a lot of schools have nice facilities, nice campuses, good academics and really good football,” Buchner said. “Everyone I talked to at Notre Dame really thinks the place is special. The people are genuinely good people. You’re surrounded by a lot of great people, and that’s what separated Notre Dame from the rest.

“I don’t think there’s another place in the country where you can play that high level of football with that high level of exposure and come out of it with a great degree.”

For all the analysis on Buchner’s game from recruiting analysts and recruiting departments, the simplest take goes back to that blistering summer camp when the quarterback grabbed hold of Notre Dame’s attention and never let go. After that camp Buchner and Styles, the receiver who now holds offers from Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan, started to keep in touch. They text a couple times a month, including Buchner giving him a heads up that this commitment to Notre Dame was coming. Buchner figured Styles might want to know. He did.

“Hopefully I get to work with him again,” Styles said. “He’s a great quarterback.”

Soon, everybody else will get to see for themselves.
