My best approach to cardio has been finding machines that don't tax your joints but kick the shit out of you. Curve treadmill, concept rowing machines, they'll work the living shit out of you.

Had a nice cardio night tonight of switching between rowing and bike and some curve treadmill. Literally have the worst quad soreness of my life going in and could barely move but got a good 75 minutes in of 150 average HR.

    Also, fuck Tottenham

Might buy a concept rowing machine, can't say I want to spend the 6 grand on a curve treadmill though.

Stair master has been my go-to when scaling back on running to ease up on my joints. 30, 45, or 60 minutes doing that at a decent level has me sweating worse than any run in the middle of summer

I’m going to drop $1600 soon on the Bowflex Max Trainer M6. It’s a hybrid elliptical stepper...

Been doing Orange Theory this winter a couple times a week with the gf since there has been two feet of snow on the ground since Christmas. It's a great workout, and am really curious to see how the treadmill intervals and rowing will translate to distance running once it thaws. Did 4 miles recently on a treadmill due to time constraints, and it felt more like a 5k once finished.

Once the winter thaw begins, I have a feeling all these sprint workouts are going to have my body more ready for distance season than in past.

I know these feels. I really pushed myself on a relay race because I was running so well. Now my IT band is killing me :(

Just when I was starting to enjoy running.

I’ve had a cheap pro-form (under $700) I’ve had for the past 5 years or so. I’ve definitely gotten my money out of it and wouldn’t hesitate to get another one.

Definitely have been struck by IT band syndrome. Went for a long 20+ mile run today. First run over 8 miles since ultra last month. Partly because I had a suspicion that I might have been dealing with it. Felt great for the first 15 or so. Started to get a searing pain in my knee the rest of the way and it also started working it’s way up the side of my leg to my hip.

Was hoping I’d be in the clear but think I’ll be shutting down any big runs for the rest of the month and focus on cross training and short 3-5 milers to keep cardio levels strong. Need to be good to go by mid April or I’m going to have a shitty time in Zion.

Ice, more stretching, foam rollers, and hip strengthening exercises are going to be my best friends for the next few weeks

I’ve noticed that subbing in other cardio workouts where I can get my heart rate to hover between 135-150 bpm for 30-60 minutes has been just as effective as running 35-50 miles a week. It’s kind of nice.

Stair stepper on a “fat burner” or “calorie burner” setting for 30-60 minutes at Level 10, 12, and sometimes 14 absolutely kills me (in a good way). I swear more doing that than any other workout. One lady stopped me and said “it looks like you’re working out very hard. Are you a fire fighter?” I thought “no, just a crazy person going this hard on this thing”

Going to test out row machine and focus on getting into a schedule on the stationary bike to see how that goes.

Key thing I’ve learned: the heart doesn’t know what kind of activity you’re doing. As long as you can get the heart rate up and keep it in your aerobic training heart rate range then that’s all the matters for endurance.

I thought the stair stepper would be an issue, but surprisingly it wasn’t.

I’d test some things out and see what feels good. If you can do some of those pain free or with very minimal discomfort, then I’d do it.

Try some stretches and use a foam roller over the area before starting something too. Certainly helps loosen things up and promote blood flow

No medicines, but I do have some CBD infused hemp balm that I often put on sore muscles or joints after harder workouts. Definitely helps with inflammation and overall soreness. The company is Elixinol. Got some free samples of it through this one ultra series out here in CO. They’re actually a sponsor

Other than that I’m pretty good about on and off ice packs on the knee right now when I’m at home and keeping it elevated

just going back through here, finished the half at 1:42 last year. Missed my goal by 1:45 so hoping that doesn't happen again this year. I have a 10 mile race in 3 weeks (Cherry Blossom in DC) that I'll use to gauge marathon goal.

Last two times I went running yesterday and sometime last week I was almost hit by cars about five times. Drivers don’t fucking look right they just worry about traffic coming from their left. One asshole literally looked at me and still ran the fucking stop sign.

    Fuck you and your “sorry”

Just finished the Cherry Blossom 10 mile. Ambitious goal was 75 and I hit 74:20 according to the unofficial results so I’m very happy with it.

Can’t recommend this race enough, this is my 5th time doing it and every year it gets better.

Now time to build up a solid base and start training for a full in November.

Heading down to Zion near the end of this week. 50k is on Saturday. Looking forward to it. Hoping my body will hang in there for the whole thing. Been nursing my knee for the last 4-6 weeks. A lot less running and a lot more mixed cardio on various machines - row machine has been great lately. Feeling pretty good. Just did a 10 mile tune up run this morning. Had done a 5 mile hike with 1800 ft gain yesterday, and back to back 3 milers on Thu/Fri. Now time to shut it down for this week and rest up

Have some big hiking plans for a handful of days after race day. Should be interesting...

I’ve went down to running 1 Day a week at a snails pace (10 min mile) to nurse this planter fasciitis. Mixing in stationary bike, elliptical, swimming. Starting to worry this PF is a chronic condition that will feel better at times but may never be completely “healed”

Nice work. Sub-3:30 marathon goal? Or something more ambitious? Plenty of time for November!

btw I didn't pull sub-3:30 out of my ass, I like to reference my Hansons Marathon Method race equivalency chart, it's been pretty accurate for me:

Zion 50k complete. Tough and challenging trail. Elevation profile was completely deceptive. But still finished with a great time and had fun. Amazing views throughout

Finished in top 30 overall, top 20 overall for males, and 3rd in my age group. I think 400 runners in the 50k. I’ll chalk it up to a big win. Plus my knee held up the entire race without any blow ups.

Time for a slight break before I get destroyed next month with back-to-back weekend ultras

Me and the gf are chugging right along toward our goal of 1,000 miles for the year. We reach 300 miles on Saturday morning and are currently around 311. Barring an injury we should meet our goal around Christmas time.
