GOTG on FX currently. Best origin film isn’t an argument. This is one of the most rewatchable movies in the entire MCU.
Spoiler regarding tessarect: I’ve got the timeline down...but didn’t it basically “melt” through the metal on the plane that Cap fights Red Skull on? How did it just sit on Fury’s desk?
It’s ok, I dunno I just didn’t like it. When compared to the other recent marvel movies like Infinity War, Ragnorak, Black Panther it’s not on the same level
It was still essentially activated after Red Skull had been teleported and producing a huge amount of energy. Someone spoil that for me if deemed necessary
Spoiler It was a much better movie, but there was definitely a Suicide Squad/Justice League feel to it in terms of "we need a good song"/"we need a joke here" moments at times. One of the things that Marvel has been much better at than DC is the editing stuff, and this one felt like they just tried too hard with the songs and the one liners over just trying to tell a good story at different points. It's not a bad movie. It's just not as good as it should have been.
I really enjoyed the performances in the movie more than the story I think Deaging was incredible and some of the visuals were really cool
Middle of the pack MCU movie. The tone was weirdly inconsistent and it makes sense that there are 5 credited screenwriters. That being said, Brie was great as was Sam Jackson. As others have said, I’m excited to see her in endgame.
Did they shoot End Game before Captain Marvel? I could see there being some disconnect there between what we saw in this and there is in End Game.
Pretty weak film for this part of the MCU continuum. Enjoyable but meh. Looking forward to seeing how she fits in to Endgame.
Spoiler Howard Stark fished it out of the ocean while looking for Cap, been in SSR/SHIELD possession ever since, Mar-Vell got involved with SHIELD project developing next gen fighters powered by the tesseract, Fury recovers if via Flerken, then enlists Dr. Selvig to work on it many decades later after Thor showed up on Earth.
Spoiler Dont think he was asking how did they get the tessaract. More of how the tessaract was able to sit on Nick Fury’s desk where as in CA:TFA it was clearly shown melting through the metal of Red Skull’s plane. As You and You stated, it was probably because it was still activated
I thought some of the more serious dialogue was forced and just didn't work. Like the cliche "you don't know me, you have no idea what I'm capable of" scene that sounded like they ripped it from Kevin Spacey's "the negotiator". Story seemed decently good, not great, but just felt like the dialogue could've been better. the flerken coughing up the tesseract, did that happen before infinity war, or afterwards? It seemed like they set that shot up to be taken either way.
how would the flerken cough up the tesseract after IW? it was already crushed during the first scene of IW.
Brie killed it - exceeded my expectations for sure. Direction and screenplay on the other hand.....thought there were a lot of things they could have done better. It was a solid film, too convoluted in certain areas but there's no way someone comes out of the theatre thinking that was a bad product and I think it's great that they're introducing the female superhero element and in my opinion more effectively from a range standpoint than wonder-woman was able to execute.
Yeah man Goose was still chilling in Fury’s old unchanged or redecorated office from the mid-90s post-Infinity War and there are multiple tesseracts That’s plausible
What do you mean by "range" compared to WW? I don't think I agree with that, but maybe I'm just misunderstanding your premise.
Like I said, I really enjoyed it. I understand the complaint Carol didn’t really have a character arc, but I don’t think all films require the same tropes when it comes to character development.
i thought the movie was fairly uneven but larson and jackson were both outstanding in it when onscreen together. it was about as good as dr strange or thor 1, though i prefer dr strange to thor 1 by a bit. i'd have to rewatch ant man to think about that one.
I realize CM isn't on Superman's level. And doesn't have all his abilities. But the end where she basically wrecked everything... that was a Superman type scene. Flying through ships, etc. I always thought the appeal of Marvel was that it was a team effort type of thing, rather than one character who could accomplish anything. Granted, Thor is headed that way it seems. And Hulk has that potential. But they just introduced an incredibly overpowered character and I imagine she'll just walk in one movie later and be a significant contributor. It just feels off to me.
Thor had to lose an eye, his hammer, his brother, best friend, half of his people for him to get "everything wrecking" tier powers. CM had to...look at a photobook and rip out a gizmo on her neck...? The payoff wasn't built up properly, not by Marvel standards, which is why I said it felt like a comic book movie from the early 2000s
To be clear, Carol Danvers isn't on Superman's level, defensively. She can still be killed. Bullets aren't going to bounce off her eyeball like they would Supes. But offensively she's close to being on par.
The amnesia plot was incredibly cookie cutter, had this movie been built around the Kree / Skrull war it would have been an infinitely better movie. Carol Danvers spending an entire movie trying to find out she's actually human (that the entire audience knew from the start) compared to what could have been Carol Danvers uncovering the Kree conspiracy about the Skrulls with Ben Mendelson being the 2nd main character? Sign me up for that second version.
I realize this is all fake super power stuff I'm nitpicking. But she flew through a damn space ship at incredible speeds and wasn't slowed down. I think she's closer to his level defensively than we think. Not talking about the comic version because i know nothing about that. Just talking about the movie itself.
It wasn't just a payoff thing, for me. As I wrote previously, we're not given any reason why she does the things she does. To compare to other origin movies... - IM1 clearly tells us who Tony was before, during and after held captive and learning about his weapons, and his motivation is clear and sets up everything he's done since. - Cap 1 clearly tells us what drove Steve before the serum, after taking it, and it sets up every choice he's made since - Thor 1 clearly tells us who Thor was, why he wasn't ready to lead, and how losing his powers and finding "humanity", on some level, changed him. It's set up everything he's done since. - Ant Man tells us he's a former con who can't work, and this is his way to becoming the hero to his daughter he wants to be. It sets up both movies. Now compare that to Captain Marvel. What do we know about what motivates or drives her? Movies can serve different purposes, but the MCU isn't just a bunch of random movies. You need stuff like that to connect to characters beyond one fun movie.
What drives CM is Jude Law telling her to "control her emotions" the entire movie and her doing a fantastic fucking job at it. I'm madder at the script and directing the more time I've spent away from watching it.
This was my thought as well. One of the things I always struggled with in the DC universe was how all-mighty Superman was/is. In the most recent movie, the small team couldn't make a dent in the big bad guy, so their best and only option was to bring Superman back to life then it becomes Superman-and-His-Gang-of-Helpers. I enjoyed Marvel because it was more than that.
This has been my thoughts exactly. Spoiler I’m thinking that since her powers come from the space stone and since Thanos wields it, that it will make him practically immune to all of her power and possibly be able to control/minimize her powers to almost nothing. This is my theory... only way I can see her not being just OP as fuck and winning everything with very little investment in her character.
There’s a new Fox/Marvel/Disney concept coming out that is going to be really interesting to most of the people ITT. Basically taking a traditionally harmless story and going dark as hell with it.
Don't think that needs a spoiler. I think she's going to be the measuring stick for Thanos' strength, the way Odin might have been. I think she gets knocked down a peg once IW4 happens.
Imo she's at Vision's strength level, both of them got their powers from an Infinity Stone. How she was able to absorb the blast energy though is just another one of the complaints I have.
she probably gets the shit kicked out of her in the early part of the movie when she tries to take on thanos solo
She’s probably a mix of vision and scarlet witch, and not sure how capable thanos will be since he appears to be injured and the gauntlet is scorched If he’s still able to use it he should be able to handle her given that her power is merely from one stone
