Highest paid RT or Nickel happens every year no matter what because the cap is going up $10-15M every year the last 3-5 years. That's how it's supposed to work on the open market.

Nickel is a starting position now and they've begun to get paid like it. He's been really damn good

The Wagner signing blew up the position and was like $2-3 million more per season than the previous high at that time. Salaries get blown up all the time but the point is that it usually tends to happen at higher profile positions.

I don't think the league views the difference between LT and RT nearly as drastic as it once was, and I think Wagner's contract was more a sign of that than anything.

I don't doubt that and I'm sure they see nickel corners as starters now too. But I question if Quinn is really a guy that's just ahead of the curve on this or do good/experienced GMs know better than to make big jumps like that outside of elite/impact players and positions. Looked it up and last year Bobby McCain signed the highest nickel deal at 4/$27million so he just blew up that position as well.

The "largest ever" thing depends on how you look at it (and how much the guarantees are). Tavon Young of the Ravens recently signed an extension of 3/$25.5M as a slot CB. So, in that sense, we outbid that by about $0.5M per year.

$6.25M a year ties him with Tyler Kroft for the 15th highest yearly salary for an NFL tight end. Immediately below Doyle, Ebron and Vance McDonald.

It's basically the exact same contract every tight end has gotten this offseason. They're all getting 6-6.25 a year

So it's a 4 year deal unless he's amazing and forces an extension before year 5 or terrible and gets cut after 3 years.

That's $20M still available for FA, less Zenner and whatever for Coleman. They could be as much as $11.5M, but probably more like $6M.

We have worked these deals to leave us a lot of cap space still this offseason, are we going to re-work some deals or could we be after another big name FA? I would love another CB so we don't have to see Teez on the field ever again, I would love Darby on this team (as long as he is healthy)

We need to extend Glasgow but it seems like we are giving ourselves room to be active in trades and FA if necessary.

So they're set on offensive for starters with Aboushi. Need a #2 RB, unless they think that's Zenner. Ridding is the 3rd down back unless they cut him for cap space and sign a #2 back. Roberts and a draft pick can be the rest of the TE group. Probably can draft or sign a fine WR4. Trading out of 8 for extra picks is a good move now, if anybody wants to play ball.

Looking at who is left, I hope we use that cap money on Darby. Although I am not sure who all is available in the trade market at the moment.

    Lions get No. 5, 70 for No. 8, 43

    Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
Out of left field? Perhaps, but the Lions did meet with Haskins at the combine, then spent free agency throwing gobs of money at players like Trey Flowers, Justin Coleman and Jesse James. It sure seems like they're laying the foundation to make a run, and the blueprint in the current NFL is to do it with a rookie-deal QB. I'd expect Matthew Stafford to remain the starter in 2019 then hit the trade block the next offseason.

The blueprint for winning in the NFL is to do it with a QB on a rookie deal, apparently. So the plan would be to trade a 2 to move up to draft Haskins, sit him for a year while paying Stafford a $30M cap hit, then trade Stafford next year when he has less value and it would still cost us $10M in dead cap $$. That way, Haskins can play under a rookie deal for maybe couple years, at which point our best case scenario is we would then need to pay him $30M a year.

If we're going to try to win with a QB on a rookie deal, just trade Stafford now and actually get the cap relief during that rookie contract. Don't keep him around for a year and put yourself in a weird situation moving forward while not saving any money.

local guys are speculating that Coleman will play on the outside because that's where he played under Patricia in NE. Also said they are more likely holding on to that cash to acquire someone via trade versus signing anyone else.

Given his injury history, Eric Berry would be the perfect to be part of a safety rotation and bridge the gap to when Walker is completely ready to take over.

Bored at work so doing some mock draft simulations. I did a trade back to pick up a couple 3s, and I wanted to see what it could be if I took a OL in round 1. What would people think about this? I could see us liking all these guys, and I can also see us taking a QB in rounds 3-5.

Round 1 Pick 16 (CAR): Williams, Jonah, OT/OG, Alabama
Round 2 Pick 11: Love, Julian, CB, Notre Dame
Round 3 Pick 13 (CAR): Winovich, Chase, DE, Michigan
Round 3 Pick 24: Sanders, Miles, RB, Penn State
Round 3 Pick 36 (CAR): Oliver, Josh, TE, San Jose State
Round 4 Pick 9: Jackson, Tyree, QB, Buffalo
Round 5 Pick 8: Meyers, Jakobi, WR, North Carolina State

I know the MSU and OSU fans in our Lions base hate Winovich, but if they're still looking for an edge rusher on day 2 I think he would likely be their guy. Everything about him is pretty much exactly what the NE system looks for at the position (rush LB where Okwara is currently), both in terms of his tape and his testing numbers.

I don't have any great desire to see the Lions draft Chase, but I think he'll be an able contributor who other fan bases hate, so that's something.

I like the idea of taking a guard if they trade down, especially if that guard might turn out to be a good RT.

Brown had an original round tender. Since he was an UDFA we wouldn’t owe any compensation if the Rams don’t match.
