Bill to allow tax refunds to go to border wall clears Alabama Senate
    Today 8:34 PM

    • By The Associated Press

Alabamians would be able to donate part of their state income tax refunds to help build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico, according to a bill the state Senate advanced Thursday.

Senators voted 23-6 Thursday to approve the bill that would allow residents to check a box on their state income tax form and donate to We Build The Wall Inc., a nonprofit started by a veteran. According to the group's website, the organization is focused on privately building portions of a border wall with Mexico.

"I think it's a way for Alabamians to say to the president and to the nation that we think strong border security is important. We want to promote that. We want Washington to build that wall," said Republican Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, who sponsored the proposal and is considering a run for U.S. Senate in 2020.

President Donald Trump last month controversially declared a national emergency in the hopes of steering $3.6 billion more to border barriers than lawmakers have approved.

The Alabama Senate voted along party lines Thursday. The bill now moves to the Alabama House of Representatives.

Sen. Bobby Singleton, a Democrat, called the proposal a Republican "feel-good" bill.

"What about the Northern border? More people are crossing over the Northern border but you don't want to pay them any attention," Singleton said.

Alabama currently allows people to donate to about 20 groups and programs, such as cancer research and an organ donation awareness program, on their tax forms. The border wall organization would join those groups if the bill wins final passage.

    Gallery: Michael Damon Daniels Arrest

By Carol Robinson | [email protected]

A birthday celebration ended in horror for a Birmingham woman who was shot five times in the parking lot of a gas station.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, 33-year-old Jamie Davis would soon learn she had nearly been killed as part of a seemingly random series of crimes. According to police and court records, the man police say shot her, Michael Damon Daniels, went on to shoot two more people – fatally - that Sunday morning.

Daniels, a 25-year-old convicted felon, left a trail of carnage in a relatively short period of time, court records contend. So far, he has been charged with 18 violent felony crimes involving eight different victims.

Some of the crimes happened in the days leading up to March 10, but some of the most violent crimes happened in just a span of hours that day. Court records indicate Daniels does not currently have an attorney.

He is charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of Octavia Dortch, a 45-year-old mother and grandmother who was slain when she showed up to work at Arlington Rehabilitation Center and HealthCare Center on Tuscaloosa Avenue about 7 a.m. that morning. Daniels also is charged with capital murder in the shooting death less than two hours later of 28-year-old Gregory Snodgress, who had stopped to make a quick purchase at the BP service station on Montevallo Road S.W.

Police said the victims did not know each other, and police say there is no indication Daniels knew either of them. Both killings are believed to have been captured on surveillance video, as was the shooting of Davis.

Nah just dropped the article about our reps doing such a wonderful job. They must not have anything to do in the Gump.

While looking up that one, I also noticed the other article about the crime spree. First time I have seen anything about it. I thought that those type of incidents only happened in Florida.

The housing market in some of the more popular areas in Birmingham is pretty insane and not what I expected. We were one of 9 offers on a house that "went live" yesterday. Offered 12% over listing price and we still didn't get it.

Depending on the house, you could be in for a treat.

It's the second house we have made an offer on in Crestline Park. I purposefully low balled the first since it was my first time ever making an offer on a house, and I found out yesterday it went under contract for $20-30k over listing price. Like the one yesterday, first day it "went live" it had multiple offers.

I love Crestwood. Really prefer the overall style of homes over there vs Crestline Park too.

But being able to walk to Saws and Neighborhood Hops has spoiled me for life. Similar walking distance situation will be a requirement for anywhere I move in the future.

but yeah that is nice. i can walk to woodlawn, which is okay i guess, but i also don't really like feeding the blatant gentrification there.

I would be so pissed if my real estate agent told me that a potential buyer offered more than the asking price. I am fully capable of listing my house for less than it's worth. What exactly am I paying 5% of the sale price for if you don't know the market well enough to list the house for a high enough asking price?

After having lived within walking distance of a bar for the past 5 years, this is pretty much the driving force behind where I am looking for houses. I dropped the ball on one on 39th St S the other week, and I'm still kicking myself.

This is all the rage right now. It's basically that you list it at the bottom of the range for the area and create a lot of buzz and interest in the house. People get excited about it and you get flooded with offers and some people start offering more because they feel the house is worth more than it was listed for anyways. It's a marketing strategy for in demand areas.

I agree with you about it seeming to be dumb, but a buddy that's a realtor in Vestavia said it's absolutely working. So :idk:

It's a great big scam that all of the residential real estate agents are in on to maximize their returns and minimize their work. It's brilliant from their perspective, but they're the only ones who win. I'm not falling for it.
