Interesting. Special features are the bread and butter of AD, and already sell out regularly.

In Austin, they screened Ran (a retelling of King Lear in feudal/Samurai Japan, Dir by Kurosawa) in 35mm and that was nearly a sell out. Well Ran got a 4k restoration that same summer, and I requested the programming staff to screen the restored version. The programming staff replied something along the lines "we just screened that but ill see what we can do". Well turns out they did screen it and it was a ~sellout too.

I will have to think about the 7 day thing. It's possible that user is on a variation of the Season Pass with different terms/rules than they will go public with. I will admit, even with MoviePass at its heyday of nearly 0 restrictions, and multiple ADs near me, I did pay for some out of pocket tickets just for convenience.

I'm next to AH high school. You?

I carry the Cinemark version for $9.95/month and that is doing the job, tickets roll over, so "you can't lose". The program is fine, but the theater is pretty sub-optimal, said with full acknowledgement as an AD snob. The Cinemark I go to (Rave 13 or w/e) is pretty run of the mill.

Something tells me the NHR location will miss its planned April open date.

Are you going to a Times Square or Piccadilly Circus location or something? I don't even think the tickets at most LA locations cost that much, unless you're talking about a 3D/Imax screening.

Well details have leaked about Regal's subscription service. It seems pretty much identical to what AMC does for the most part, except it requires a cringe-worthy 12-month initial commitment. Prices are $18, $21, and $23 a month with surcharges for 3D, RPX, ScreenX, 4DX, VIP Tickets, and Premium Seating theaters (excluding recliners). So you're looking at having to eventually pay $216, $252, or $282 for the first year.

Subscription prices vary by theater. Sounds like each theater will only support one tier, so if you are in a location with only one Regal that does the most expensive tier then that's what you are stuck with. Only 204 theaters will support the cheapest tier, 480 for mid tier, 554 for top tier.

That will be a very hard pass from me. I've got Amazon Prime, Netflix, and sometimes Hulu at home. I'll just watch shit on there before I commit over $200 a year just towards movie tickets for myself when most of the stuff coming out these days is shit.

I see, on average, less than 24 movies a year in a theater so the math doesn't work out. This will actually be the 4th consecutive week I've looked at what's showing at my local Regal and have found nothing I wanted to see.

Would be more expensive for me to do the subscription than just pay for a ticket.

Honestly seeing 24 new releases a year seems like a huge chore considering I’m not into super hero movies.

Agreed. At a $216 a year commitment, I'd feel morally obligated to force myself to go see movies that I only have a very minor or les interest in seeing just so I can say I got my money's worth, as $18 a month is approximately the cost of two tickets at my location. If I could only get the $21 or $23 a month options I'd have to go see three. And I'll be damned if I am going to the theater to watch another terrible and generic action/horror movie or a children's/superhero movie.

I have no problem with that. I like the Toy Story movies. I don't really consider children's movies to be the type that is better when viewed in a theater instead of at home. And since I'm basically paying a premium to see it in a theater, that's what I want in addition to a quality movie.

Explain to me how anything is better at home than in a theater with a screen 50 times larger, better audio, movie popcorn, fountain soda, etc.?

Just a few things off the top of my head...

The comforts of home > theater.

Sure, the size of the screen is bigger and the audio is better, but I am pretty pleased with the picture and audio quality that my Samsung TV provides.

I can use subtitles/captions at home.

I don't get ripped a new asshole just to get a small beverage and a little bit of food. Hell, a small popcorn at my Regal is $6.79 alone before tax, a small bottled water is $5. I can get an actual meal at a solid restaurant like Jersey Mike's, Jimmy John's, McAlister's Deli, or many quality local establishments, and etc. for less than that, and that is including the price of gluten-free bread!

I have my entire kitchen available for my in-movie dining experience, as well as being able to do whatever delivery or takeout I want since just about everyone either delivers or has signed up with one of the food delivery service apps these days, as opposed to being limited to whatever is at the theater, and my local theaters are just your standard concessions. May cost a bit more in the end to get it delivered, but I will certainly get a heck of a lot more for my money.

I have access to my own bathroom instead of a public bathroom.

I can pause the movie to go get more food or beverage, to use the bathroom, to check a text or whatever I want on my phone/computer so I don't miss anything. I can rewind if I want to see something again.

I don't have to deal with other people fucking up my viewing experience at home.

“Both Regal and AMC—two large cinema chains in the United States—say that their popcorn is considered gluten-free. Cinemark, another large movie theater chain, states that its popcorn without the buttery topping is gluten-free, and that its popcorn salt contains both dairy and soy. Cineplex states that its plain popcorn is gluten-free.”
