Gracie is now 18 months and wife has been home with her the whole time. Wife was getting bored of being home and Gracie seemed to be getting bored at home so wife started looking for a job about a month ago. We originally planned on 2 years but bumped it up. She was offered the job she wanted this week and is supposed to start 4/15. We started looking at the daycare learning center places but none of the ones we want have openings. It would be until like June. I guess we should have done this backwards, found daycare and then looked for a job, but that wasnt something we really thought about. So the place on the top of our list has opening for Monday and Tuesday starting now and then full time in June. I guess we'll have to hire a nanny for the 3 days during the 2 month gap? I dont really see any other options but damn that's expensive. It would be about $1800 for the nanny and another $650 or so far the learning center for Monday and Tuesday. Anyone have a better idea?

Edit: I work from home so getting a nanny isnt as scary if we were leaving her completely with some random lady, licensed or not.

I just dont get how people do it. Like we talked to half a dozen different schools and none have room. If you go back to work after 8 weeks, it's easy. You can plan ahead. If you stay home for a while and then have to find a new job, I guess you just have to find daycare and then start the job search? If it takes 6 months to find a job, you're just eating daycare for 6 months while one of you isnt working and just chills all day?

It’s crazy with wait list for daycares. Wife is going back to work in July/August and the places we're looking can’t promise a spot. Just have to get on the waiting list. Basically it’s get in somewhere until the place we want has a spot then go there.

That's nuts. This just isnt something we though about when we decided she was going to stay home longer than the 8 weeks. Its impossible to plan around it.

We need to open a daycare.

On a daycare discussion, this just happened at our previous place before we moved across state. So glad we don’t have to deal with this. The owner sold out to another daycare. That other daycare doesn’t do 3 and under kids. So everyone that has a kid under 3 there has 1 month to find another place. Of course all the other daycares in that area have at least 3-4 month waits. Our fiends over there are furious. My wife said we better be glad we moved bc if she was dealing with that there’s no telling what she would have done with that owner.

You have to get a spot when you find out you’re prganant if you want a good daycare in a lot of places.

We put our oldest on the waiting list when we found out my wife was pregnant and still had to wait a few months.

We found some decent options through the babysitter websites (sittercity, etc). I worked from home on the days the sitter/nanny was at the house. That lasted about a year until I told my wife to quit her job. (She ended up scaling back significantly and only works enough to keep her licenses up to date now.)

There's a daycare in dallas that has a 2 year wait list. How do you even plan for that? We got into the one we wanted, but now we're looking into moving to a different part of town :killme:

My wife works as the office manager at a daycare and their wait list is like a year long right now. It’s absurd.

People get on the wait list when they start trying to have a kid. And it’s $500 to get on the wait list. The $500 doesn’t go towards anything except getting on the list.

That’s something I’m wondering. Once we get moved into the house soon we’re going to do more testing. We think it could be something with this apartment since it started after we moved here.

My wife just corrected me and said it’s $250 but that only keeps you on the waiting list for 18 months. If there still isn’t a spot open you have to pay another $250 to renew your waiting list spot for another 18 months

We drove down to Des Moines for the NCAA regional yesterday. I was with my wife, FIL and our 2 kids (4 & 10 months) so we bought 4 tickets. When we attempted to enter the arena they informed us we needed a ticket for the baby. The event was sold out so I walked around to find a scalper and everyone was sold out. The only thing I found was a $225 ticket on StubHub. Seriously! I paid $225 to get a 10-month old in to a game so that the rest of our tickets didn’t go to waste. The NCAA is terrible. Even airlines allow lap seats for kids under 2.

I have never heard of this, I don't think it cost us anything to get on a waiting list at the two daycare we've used, and these weren't cheap daycares. This almost seems illegal.

Every place we've talked to has had a $100-$150 fee to get on the waiting list. Sucks bc we'd like to get on several wait lists just kn case something opens up in the next few weeks but I'm not paying $100+ a pop to take that chance.

I know for a fact the waiting list fee at my wife’s work is not applied to anything other than the waiting list. These days that use it as a deterrent from getting on the waiting list because it’s so long. The fee used to be much lower.

Do you live in Alabama as well? Do they just have too few daycares to serve Birmingham or something? Even in the metro-Atlanta area where a wait list could be over a year I don't think we had to pay a fee anywhere.

No wait list fees here and I was upset when my wife wanted to change daycares last year and the cost went up from $500 to $600 a month

Daughters car just won the pinewood car derby today that our friends host. Pretty proud. She had the children’s division locked up and the guy that won the adult literally brings a briefcase with his cars and stuff. I did a few last second tweaks before the last heat and she blew his car away.

We were very fortunate and still are to have both sets of grandparents in our life to be able to help bridge the gap with day care.

I would tell dblplay1212 to look at your local church for a temporary bridge. Most churches are either free or very affordable and normally don't have waiting list.

Also have you thought about public, private or charter schools for your kid? We decided on private school and they started at pre-school level so lucky for us we were only forced to use a daycare for one year before he enrolled at the private school.

Looking back I would've avoided using the high end day care for that year in favor of the less expensive church day care as I found the high end day care to be a bunch of bullshit at age 2.

Yea we're already talking about schools. We're buying a new house later this year and that'll play a big role. We lost 2 spare rooms when one became a nursery and one became a home office so we want some more space. Stay in Duval County and pay $1500+ a month for private school or move to St John's County and do public bc they have the best schools in the state. Duval has Charter but they are kind of hit or miss. There's a newer area here called Nocatee that has their own schools and they are the best of the best here. Of course housing is a bit more there but the savings on school more than offset the $100k price bump.

Love the nocatee area. Got a couple dentist I work with there. If my territory was more north we would have moved to either nocatee or St. John’s area.

Yea it's an awesome concept. Instead of a golf course, they built the entire area around families with kids.

For those not familiar, Nocatee is a huge development here. Idk how many square miles it is but it has probably 20 neighborhoods so far and thousands of homes. Each little cluster of neighborhoods have their own pool and clubhouse but then the main town center area has 2 massive pool areas that are Disney level. It's insane. All of the neighborhoods are connected with golf cart paths and most people get around via golf cart. The grocery store has golf cart parking. Living in Nocatee gets you access to all of them. It's an awesome place to raise a kid so I'm pretty sure that's what we're going to do.

This is one of the big ones.

ok that isn't far off what the rates in this area are... my Barber pays about 16k for a full year and 5 full days of daycare.

we pay 14k a year but it runs with the school year so he's off a few months...

Yea I think its $1300 or so per month for the "learning center." Thats not bad. Probably overkill for an 18 month old but I dont want her somewhere for a year and then move her so we'll just do that now, I guess. But paying $650 for 2 days and $1800 for the other 3 days sucks, even if just for 2 months. The nannys we've looked at are about $16 an hour and we'll need them for about 9 hours a day.

Only issue I saw was a lot of kids use them to go to the town center or to friends houses so you have to be aware of that. But yea the concept is awesome. When I first moved here, living on a golf course is what everyone wanted bc they had the big clubhouse and amenities. Nocatee came in and put the amenities to level 10 and just got rid of the golf course. They have their own schools too so they really just built the entire place around families with kids.

No way my wife would do that. She wouldn't even entertain the idea. If we go the many route, we'll use a service like this that verifies all the licenses and shit like that.

    https://twinkletoesnanny.com/jacksonville/

Wife is even paranoid about that, but luckily I'll be home. Still looking at a daycare that has room for 2 months but that service will be a last resort. Gracie has this weird anxiety about being home without my wife here. She goes to my moms every Saturday with no issue. Her and I run errands all the time with no issue. But if we are all at home and wife leaves, she loses her shit. She'll sit at the door and cry the entire time. I guess bc she's just not used to being here with her. Obviously I cant have that when i work from home so i really dont like the nanny at home idea but we'll have to do that if we cant find a daycare.

The town center one is always packed. They just opened the 2nd one so it should be a little better but still. Each neighborhood had their own mini version that's much less crowded though.
