Next year could actually be wide open for team title right? PSU doesn’t have a defending champ returning and Joseph and hall I wouldn’t say are favorites coming back. A lot of talent but should be interesting
It would have been a major or a fall if the team title wasn't wrapped up and he wasnt 10 seconds away from winning an NCAA title.
A lot is going to depend on olympic redshirts. Eierman was the first to drop. I'd say Hall is a prime candidate.
Random thought: Does Micic qualify for an Olympic Redshirt? He'd seem like a good bet to take one, but are non-Americans allowed to take them? I don't even know the rules.
Bo was definitely more conservative than I expected. I guess he figured he was going to win regardless was not taking any silly chances like he did his freshman year.
Other than Hall, who would they redshirt? Who even has a redshirt to burn besides the incoming true freshmen? Just RBY basically? Or does Nick Lee still have one?
GGCD is right 125 Teske - too small 133 RBY no need to rs him 141 Lee 149 Verk 157? Good question 165 Cenzo 174 Manville 184 Shak 197 Conel HWT Cassar
2019-2020: 125: Teske 133: RBY 141: N Lee 149: Verkleeren 157: Berge 165: Cenzo 174: Manville 184: Hall/Brooks/Starocci 197: Conel 285: Cassar You're telling me that team can't win a national title? Better than "Ahia State's" team: 125: Heinselman 133: Pletcher (AA) 141: Kinner 149: Sasso/Hayes (AA) 157: Hayes/Sasso 165: Romero/Kharchla 174: E Smith 184: Hoffman 197: Moore (Contender) 285: Singletary OSU is looking at 2 All Americans and one title contender next year. If PSU brings their full squad they have 6 title contenders. Don't know who the best teams will be behind PSU, maybe Iowa and OKST, but Ohio State's run of three consecutive second place finishes is likely coming to an end.
I know we don’t get along but I’m being fair, it was a nice run but that’s not a natty team. No way hall goes 184, he’s out of his league at 174 except duals.
I've posted this 100 times, but I'd be surprised if Hall wrestles another match at 174 in college. He needs to get to 189.5 by 2020. He cuts to 174. 184 is the weakest weight in college next year and afaik rasheed's eligibility runs out this year. 184 is the logical place for him.
Shaks still up for a 6th year - although I’m not sure if I want him back. JMO mark’s small enough for 174. Best thing is we have Beard and probably the best HWT in all of wrestling. I’d trade you Berge for Hayes (with eligibility) today.
Mark is small enough for 174. He can make that weight. However, the international weight classes are 74kg (163 lbs), 79kg (174 lbs), and 86 kg (189.5 lbs). Hall should be at 79kg for WTT in May of this year, but 79kg is a non-olympic weight class in 2020. If he has any olympic aspirations, he must either go down to 163 pounds or up to 189.5 pounds. He has stated that there's no way he's ever cutting to 163 again, leaving 189.5 as his only option if he wants to wrestle in Tokyo.
Good for Foster. I'm a UNI grad and it's nice to see them do well. Their head coach, Schwab, lives down the street from me. Super guy. This is just the beginning for UNI hopefully.
My buddy dated Schwabs wife when they were in college at VT. She was in the softball team. We called her softball chick, naturally. Anyway. Small world!
Askren picked a fight with IMar last night, IMar was firing back at him, IMar ended up getting owned and deleting tweets. Now this morning Bo Nickal is on twitter challenging Askren to a match. Yiiiiiiiiiikes.
hot take: Bo should move to Milwaukee and train with Askren. If he wants to go into MMA, I can't think of a better guy to train with.
Teasdale back to Iowa. I have been wondering if Spencer would consider an olympic redshirt, but was a bit dubious based upon how everything went down last year (not to mention the Ramos-Dennis fiasco). This news has me thinking once again that it's possible. Hopefully the Iowa coaches do the right thing this year.
Is this years Beat the Streets going to be matches pitting the National team against this years NCAA champs?
It's supposed to be world team vs ncaa champs, yes, but I don't know how they'd arrange that before they knew who the ncaa champs were. They'd have to agree, no? Also I'm pretty sure it's scheduled the same weekend as WTT currently. Half the NCAA champs are going to be wrestling in the WTT. I believe in years past it's been a week or two after WTT.
The 1949 fencing title was our last team natty. We’ve won individual nattys (in fencing) since then (including one in women’s epee in 2003). Then Schiano canceled the fencing team in 2006.
This is notable because it was not certain that J'den was going to accept his Final X birth at 92kg (for winning a medal at 2018 worlds). 92kg is not an Olympic weight class so at some point J'den will have to move up to 97kg to challenge Snyder or down to 86kg to challenge Taylor. There were rumblings that maybe he'd decline his Final X invitation to spend a full year at his new weight class getting acclimated. FWIW, rumor is that he's heading down to 86.
I don't think Cox could beat Snyder up at that weight. His only chance is having a strength advantage over Taylor and winning the toss-ups. Though, as Taylor improves year by year and gets stronger and stronger, it will be a lot harder than in years past to beat Taylor. Taylor seems locked in. Will be interesting. As for Red shirts next year for PSU, still up in the air. Looks like Hall for sure. But RBY, LEE, Verk, Cenzo in addition to Hall have them available. Cassar and Shak seeking a 6th year. Cassar's is a gimmie, Shak, who knows but would be surprised if he didn't get the 6th year. Manville could take a red shirt as well. Many don't think a healthy Conel could even beat Beard right now. Beard has been looking pretty good but of course, he could still red shirt next year as well. Hall will most likely take the year and come back as an 184lber but there is some juggling with Starocci and Brooks.
Cox has obviously presented a unique challenge for Taylor, but last year's David Taylor wasn't getting beat by anyone. I'm just annoyed at how many world class Americans will necessarily have to miss out on the Olympics. At least 2 of Dake, Burroughs, Taylor, and Cox will miss out in this scenario and that's not even counting Dieringer who's been a top 3-5 guy at 79kg the last year or so(his weirdly dominant losses to Zahid nothwithstanding). Our depth in that 74-86 Olympic range is Russian-esque right now
