I owe a lot of my musical tastes to my parents, we've had threads about that before. Steely Dan was definitely in that grouping. My dad had rigged up two 6x9 kenwoods in their own boxes in his Dodge Ramcharger, and so he would blast music with my and my brother in the back seat. Several Steely Dan cassettes in the carrying case. Don't remember what song it was, but there was one SD song that my mom thought had a line that was inappropriate for our tender ears. Think that made me like SD more, because I definitely snuck around and got the cassettes when I could and would listen through trying to figure out what she thought was so offensive. I never did find it, or notice it really if I did, I think it said bitch or something. Silly mom.
My fav SD tune, if not mentioned is the title track on Aja. For me, it pretty much covers all of their elements in a simple song thats extremely intricate performed by a hodge-podge of legends. Its the one album you should hear. Until I was 16 I always thought they were called Steve and Dan.
It’s pretty cool, my dad’s love of Steely Dan and similar formed my love of hip hop and now my love of hip hop and similar has formed my dad’s love of hip hop etc. really a cool thing.
Used to blast cigs in the fraternity house and jam to steely dan late night after the bars in college. Good times
Boone, you’re a legendary shitposter but when you’re right you’re right and you deserves recognition for such a salient point. Even when I know McDonald is about to chime in, I’m still taken by how perfect his vocals are. I’ve Got the News is a good example but he’s phenomenal on Bad Sneakers.
Not on Aja, but Hey Nineteen’s lyrics go “the Cuervo Gold. The fine Colombian...”. As a teen listening to my parent’s music, i always assumed they were talking about tequila and blow. Also FM (No static) talks about “give her the funked up music”. Always thought that sounded like “fucked up”
No man fuck you, they were truly capable artists who transcended their earlier albums like Throwing Copper and were just beginning to show their true potential on Secret Samadhi.
Were they even really Steeley Dan at this point though? They lost something the day they lost Jeff Baxter.
Did you guys know that Steely Dan is named after a dildo? My dad told me this during Thanksgiving dinner
They were (are still in person even after Becker passed) so damn good. Probably bust out SD and Traffic tonight on the turntable while I watch CFB. Great day to be had.
I apologize for being short with you, Boom. I don’t listen to Howard Stern. Having said that, Aja is absolutely one of the best albums ever made so Gary is correct.
I have now learned the origin of that term and no longer feel like an old guy trying to be cool by using it.
I did but I never put the dots together. Hell I'm old enough that I have only recently learned that "this song slaps" is a saying.
