Didn't think the game was actually gonna happen so didn't even look. Hear a lot of thunder outside, so wonder how much will actually get played.

I'm hoping the downtown stadium talk comes to fruition. Kauffman is just a PITA to get to from the west side of the city anymore if you're not on the south 435 loop. Even then, weeknight games are awful drives. I'd love to have a centrally located park and (now I'm really, really dreaming here) some form of public transportation to get there.

Just waaaaay too much negativity on this page for my taste. I came here to celebrate my first place Royals.

Already have a couple gofundme campaigns drawn up for statues for both Nedder and legendary GM Dayton Moore. I may try to include uncle Hud in there as well.

The River Market site is my favorite, I-70 will need some work though before that happens.

Another site I've heard kicked around is where Berkeley Park is but the view from the ballpark across the river would be just the downtown airport, so it wouldn't be much of an upgrade over Denny's and the highway.

and there it is, the usual response.

I don't think it would be any worse than it is now. People would come from all directions of the city rather than just predominantly one, there would be infinitely more points of ingress/egress to the area, and traffic would arrive at more staggered times than it does now. Plus I'm sure infrastructure and streetcar upgrades would be included. It would be fine. Other cities bigger than KC have made it work.

God forbid we give people a place to get a meal and a beer before a game. Taco Bell and a 40 in the car kinda sucks.

I used to never think a downtown park would be feasible but I actually think it could be possible. The parking would probably be the biggest hurdle but there are possibilities of some pretty large off-site parking in the West Bottoms. Mass transit would be necessary though because it's about a 30 minute walk from there to either River Market or P&L

I personally think a Crossroads spot would be awesome. The original plans for TSC was a multipurpose stadium where Kauffman Center is now. Somewhere around there would be sweet. Maybe once the Star gets put out of its misery they can bulldoze their building and put it there.

The urban planning ideal would be to put it at 18th and Vine next to the NLBM but that area is kind of isolated from the rest of downtown.

So, part of our World Cup bid was a guaranteed new airport and guaranteed public transport system from the airport, to downtown, throughout downtown, to arrowhead. Dave Ficklin was key in organizing the 94 WC. He was the key to COPA Centenario in the US. He’s a great asset for KC. If we do a downtown stadium the public transport will 100% be a pre-req. Move Kauffman downtown. Give Arrowhead the parking plus roof plus Super Bowl plus WC. Everyone wins.

    Some choice quotes:

THEN WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU HIRE HIM IF HE'S NOT READY YOU FUCKING IMBECILE

    entire article:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Before the 2018 season, Baseball America, the perceived standard of prospect rankings, said the Royals had the second-worst farm system in all of baseball. If that was true, said Dayton Moore, the club’s general manager, he wanted to see the 28 systems ahead of them.

Moore did not intend to be snarky, and he didn’t intend to impugn the rankings. He just had a greater admiration for his team’s prospects (and their potential) than the industry at large. One year later, his view has largely proven accurate.

In 2018, the Royals had zero prospects ranked in the top 100 at Baseball America. Twelve months later, the club had five different players ranked in various top-100 lists, including Baseball America (RHP Brady Singer), ESPN (OF Khalil Lee and LHP Daniel Lynch) and Baseball Prospectus (OF Seuly Matias and catcher MJ Melendez). There’s a swelling optimism in the organization around a collection of prospects that will begin this season at high-A Wilmington and Double-A Northwest Arkansas. There’s hope that the group could provide the foundation for a system that compares favorably to the club’s collection of talent in 2011, which, at the time, was tabbed by Baseball America as the best system ever.

“I think this time next year,” Moore says, “people will write a lot of different things about our farm system. It’s a good group.”

Three Royals prospects, one spring home: Introducing Brady...
They have different backgrounds and personalities, but the three young pitchers have formed a bond they hope will stretch to the majors.

Moore is not one to put too much stock into rankings, of course. He likes to point out that Baseball America did not include Salvador Perez, Kelvin Herrera or Yordano Ventura when identifying the top Royals prospects in the 2011 class. The projections cannot be perfect.

The club remains optimistic about first baseman Nick Pratto, a first-round pick in 2017, and Melendez, selected in the second round that year. It has high hopes for Lee, who finished last season at Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and a collection of pitchers that will start the season at Wilmington. Yet Moore seeks to a take a humanist approach to player development.

“It’s developing players mentally and developing players spiritually,” Moore said. “Play the game — mental health, spiritual health. It’s been that way from the beginning of time. So if you go back to the philosophers of the day: body, mind and soul. Body, mind and soul.

“That’s how you get a well-rounded human being. That’s how you win baseball games. That’s how you have a healthy, thriving culture.”

The Royals are seeking to foster that culture by grouping many of their top prospects together at Wilmington. The team will be comprised largely of players that helped win a South Atlantic League championship at low-A Lexington in 2018. In an attempt to ride the momentum, the organization also promoted Lexington manager Scott Thorman, a former major leaguer with the Braves, to the manager position in Wilmington.

On most days, the lineup could feature Pratto, who draws high marks for his leadership and intangibles, and Matias, who clubbed 31 homers in 94 games last season. Melendez will split the catching duties with Sebastian Rivero. The rotation will lean heavily on last year’s deep draft class.

“We’re always going to develop players,” Moore said. “There’s no doubt in my mind we’ll develop players. We developed players in Atlanta and we developed players here, and the reason we’re always going to develop players — it’s not because we’re smarter than anybody, not because we work harder than anybody else — but you care deeply, simple kindness and concern for your players.

“You encourage them, you believe in them, you stay with them. I like our depth right now.”

The depth is improved to the point that Pratto, ranked as the Royals’ top prospect last year by Baseball America, is now seventh, surpassed by three pitchers from last year’s draft. It is such that pitchers Richard Lovelady, Scott Blewett and Yefri Del Rosario do not crack the top 10 at either Baseball America or MLB Pipeline.

Lovelady, 23, could be in the Royals’ bullpen this summer. Blewett, 22, is a 6-foot-6 righty who was drafted in the second round in 2014 and posted a 2.49 ERA in 25 1/3 innings in the 2018 Arizona Fall League. Del Rosario, 19, posted a 3.19 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 79 innings at Lexington last season.

The Royals, of course, point out that you can never have enough depth. And they used a slew of deadline trades last summer to add to the system, acquiring outfielder Blake Perkins, third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez and right-hander Yohanse Morel in exchange for reliever Kelvin Herrera and pitchers Gabe Speier and Elvis Luciano for outfielder Jon Jay. (Luciano was subsequently plucked by Toronto in the Rule 5 draft.) They will also pick second in the draft this June after finishing 58-104 last season.

“We’re not proud of that,” Moore said. “We don’t want to be picking one or two or three or four or five in the country. We want be picking later. But we have a tremendous opportunity to continue to draft and sign well. I think (scouting director) Lonnie Goldberg and the scouting department have done an excellent job. I think Lonnie Goldberg is just really getting good over the last three or four years.”

The Royals’ organization, in some ways, is still suffering from a series of poor drafts and big prospect trades earlier this decade, the latter of which helped the club win the World Series in 2015. Yet the team is coming off a run of drafts starting in 2016 that appear to have promising returns.

Lee and Lopez were taken in the first five rounds in 2016; Pratto and Melendez were identified, drafted and signed the next year.

“I think it takes eight to ten years to become a really terrific scouting director,” Moore said. “We live in an environment where people expect everything to go right and to get them right all the time. We’re paid to get them right. There’s no excuse for not getting it right, but when you look at things realistically, it takes 8-10 years to become a really, really good scouting director.

“That being said, where would we be without Lonnie drafting Brandon Finnegan and Sean Manaea. Where would we be?”

The answer is perhaps in the same place — but without a World Series championship flag flying high above Kauffman Stadium. Finnegan and Manaea were used to land pitcher Johnny Cueto and Ben Zobrist for the 2015 postseason. Now the club is seeking to repeat the process.

Moore believes that a club needs to develop five or six players who can compete at an All-Star level to contend. He believes in the importance of pitching, defense and athleticism. The Royals believe they have the foundation of that core in their farm system. Now, they need to develop it, nurture it — and add to it this summer.

“I like our system a lot,” Moore said. “But it’s always fragile. Baseball is fragile.”
