Run into him occasionally. He's a good dude. Family man, works all the time, is reliable as far as musicians go, steers clear of bullshit controversy, good music. Probably America's greatest rock musician, at least of my generation. Didn't think that would be the case 20 years ago.

 

I saw the Foo Fighters and RHCP in concert together. They blew the RHCP out of the water. Dave brought so much energy and the crowd responded to him. One of my favorite concerts.

To answer op's question, I think it's mostly because they were a solid, if not great, rock band that were able to remain in the mainstream during that post-grunge decade when the other popular stuff was pop-punk, small-dicked indie rock, or trashy nu-metal. And because Dave Grohl, despite being a mega millionaire rockstar who sells out places like Wembley Stadium, managed to still stay pretty cool and grounded.
