On my list of films to watch. I watched First Reformed two nights ago. Somewhat uncomfortable film tbh. But I did like the messaging about big business and religion.
I watched Native Son last night. This story transforming to contemporary times was a bit weird for me. I don't hate it. But I'm not sure I like it either.
I DL'd it years ago when it first hit DVD, and have kept it on my computer with the intention of watching it for that long. Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara star in it.
about 15 or so mins after that it gets much better but I think the pie eating scene is just fine in what it is trying to display
it was awesome. I think it will get a best supporting actor nom, maybe screen play. who knows, but it was really good and unique
I find it hard for there to be something more haunting from a grief perspective than Hereditary but I'm ready
In a world where the only thing that gets made is sequels and sci-fi blockbusters for the Chinese market, thank God for A24.
So I ended up liking it quite a lot. It’s deeply unsettling, but at the same time wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I think because it’s different it will turn some people off. It’s a hell of a break up movie, and is hilarious at times. It’s impressive how creepy and terrifying this movie can be at times despite taking place entirely during the day. I’m really glad I got to see this with a packed theater, it made for a pretty unique experience.
Just walked out of Midsommar a little while ago and first thing i said while exiting the theater was "What just happened?!?!?" and the two guys in front of me (none of us knew each other) just laughed and one repeated what i said on the way to the bathroom....And he then said it a couple more times. Glad i saw it, always wanted to since first seeing the trailer months ago, but going to need to think about this one for a while. Regardless, I think you described things pretty well in your post and would recommend anyone else thinking about seeing it to do so sooner rather than later so that there's a better chance of experiencing it with a crowd.
For anyone that likes a lot of A24 films, I highly recommend "You were never really here" with Joaquin Phoenix, which came out in 2017. I feel like regardless of genre, A24 films often have kind of similar vibes and style between films, that I really like, and that movie felt very similar.
so from the non spoilerly reviews I have read, you will either absolutely hate it or love it no real middle ground
I enjoyed how creepily bizarre that was tbqh I wonder what its like if you are tripping balls as you are watching it though it should win some cinematography awards
imagine getting high as fuck with your friends and then walking in on your shitty college roommate and his annoying gf breaking up. While naked people walk in and out of your apartment every so often. That's about how it was for me.
not sure if we're doing non-spoiler talk so just in case Spoiler I liked it, but don't think it's anywhere near as good as Hereditary. Hereditary was a grief movie with a subplot of cultism, this was a cult movie with a subplot of grieving. It's almost like the two plots were inverted/reversed. I also really fucking hated the comic relief character. That felt very non-ari aster and he just annoyed me more than made me laugh.
