You made me look it up, but I'm 99% sure that's the same intersection.

All I did was look up 1000 Pine St. on Google Maps. These reddit dudes apparently live in the neighborhood:

There are a few more cares parked closer to the intersections in the modern photo and parked further up the hill, plus those older cars use to be boats. Modern cars are much narrower.

Coke and Pepsi were in the middle of the Cola Wars. Pepsi's CEO, a guy hailed for his marketing genius, spearheaded the Pepsi Challenge where people tasted both blind and a lot of people chose Pepsi (That CEO ended up becoming the CEO of Apple under Steve Jobs - "Do you wanna sell sugar water for the rest of your life or do you want to come with me and change the world?"). Coke was worried that tastes were changing and decided to modify their formula to be closer to Pepsi i.e. sweeter. They called the new formula New Coke. It was a huge flop. People hated it. Coke backtracked and reverted to the old formula releasing it as Coca Cola Classic (which is what it is still called today). There is some debate around it to this day. Some say Coke fucked up with new coke super horribly and backtracked. Others claim Coke did it on purpose to push Coke Classic which actually pushed their sales higher than they had ever been because people were excited about the old formula coming back. Its an interesting case study.

The basic story is that coke’s sales rebounded after bringing back the original formula but when looking closer at the actual gross sales, it had more to do with the introduction of Cherry coke at around the same time as the new coke fiasco. Coke understanding the marketing and PR opportunity though were more than happy to let consumers believe that it was all their outrage that lead to the reintroduction of the classic formula and let shareholders believe that that was the reason for the turnaround on sales

Too young to remember New Coke itself but I remember that jingle being on commercials in the late 80s

I didn’t realize that new coke was rebranded as Coke II and still sold up until the early 2000s

I heard Coke knew it was going to switch from real sugar to using high-fructose corn syrup, and that its devoted consumers would immediately notice a difference. What to do? You can't take The Real Thing off the market for six months without.... wait a minute. Shu

I will fucking ride for diet cherry wild pepsi.

I prefer Coke, but never got the brand loyalty. I remember my grandmother having Tab, which I liked, and Diet Rite which was utter dross.

I remember new Coke and Crystal Pepsi. I also recall Surge coming out and being like drugs or alcohol for children.

“My mom won’t let me buy Surge but I hear Jeremy’s dad is letting him get some for his birthday party. Definitely going.”
