Didn't realize there was a limited digibook version of the #1 2018 album Chapel Of Disease. Limited to 200 hand numbered copies, I picked up a couple. Will make a killing in about 10 years when people realize what a great album that is.

I'm hearing rumblings that one of my favorite bands, Mgla is associated with National Socialist Black Metal. Especially their ties with known NSBM asshat and terrible human being Mikko Aspa (vocalist for Deathspell Omega).
It seems that a LOT of metal bands have been accused of being white supremacist or with being "associated" with National Socialism. What are your opinions on such issues?
Do you not associate the art with the artists
    Or
Do the politics ond beliefs of the artists matter to you?
Also, people are pointing fingers without a lot of proof.
Idk I'm just curious of your opinions on this growing issue

I've been avoiding 80% of black metal since the 90's.

It's not really a growing issue, it's been a lot of the same for nearly 30 years.

I'm able to live with contradictions. I still love those Burzum records even though Varg Vikerness seems to barely be contrite about murdering a someone in cold blood

Plus the audience these groups reach matters. How many people have even heard of Mgla, let alone have listened to them?

Hadn’t heard that about Mgla. Their interviews and lyrics don’t indicate any beliefs other than nihilism, based on what I’ve read. Would be super disappointed to find that out.

Personally, I lean pretty far left and absolutely despise that right wing nationalist garbage. I do think there has been a rush to condemn bands, however, and think people need to get the facts right before hurling accusations.

The Polish extreme metal scene is notorious for having a large number of awful, racist bands though. It seems that, if you go back far enough, almost every band from Poland has some sort of NSBM connection, label release, session/touring member, or a split with a certain band. Even Behemoth ran in the same circles as Graveland in the early days before distancing themselves. Ukraine is also similar in this regard.

There are about 20 different ways to approach this problem, but the first that comes to mind for me is that extreme metal is about the worst way to get that sort of message out. I can only speak for myself, but if a band indeed is a Nazi band, white supremacist, etc., it's hard for me to know or care because I don't even know the lyrics to a single song of my own favorite band. There's no such thing as a Nazi riff. Ultimately if a band is using metal as straight up platform for National Socialism, I feel like it's something that would be shut out pretty quickly from the relative "mainstream." No one worth a shit is going to want to tour with a Nazi band, particularly bands from Europe.

On the other hand, you're always going to have cunts who think they're replicating the early 90s Norwegian stuff, but imo the best way to deal with that is to let it flame out to their dozens or maybe hundreds of listeners.

    still thinking about Nazi bands

Whenever this Nazi stuff comes up, I'm not really sure how to handle it. Extreme metal to me is so silly, or at least at the borderline of being silly, that it seems pretty easy to brush it off. Darkthrone said something about being Aryan Metal in the 90s and then when they were pressed on it they said they were trying not to be Jewish or some stupid shit like that. In the Shadow of the Horns is still a banger, regardless of whatever stupid shit Fenriz said then.

Controversial lyrics make things a lot more complicated than, say, a painting if you're trying to be consistent with a belief system. I would consider my own politics to be hard left and I'm not going to patronize actual Nazi bands, but I'm also not going to shy away from listening because the lyrical content is irrelevant to me. Burzum is still a great band even though Varg is a piece of shit. Most metal lyrics are nonsense anyway, so if some band is saying Nazi shit, I file it down the nonsense hole along with HIS MOUTH... IS... A VORTEX... SUCKING YOU INTO ITS PANDEMONIUM from Opeth.

In the past, I basically completely separated the art from the artist. It’s getting more difficult to do that as I get older. I have no interest in going to a show or wearing a shirt or supporting with money an artist’s ability to promote hatred and violence toward people. Even if the bands are usually too dumb to actually do anything, the kids they inspire aren’t.

Vanum is going to be in Portland in about a month for something called Eternal Warfare Fest

Tickets are $42 for the day and it looks like they're only play for like 50 mins though :/

They have two albums, you're gonna be ok. You want something to cry about? I like 42 God Dethroned tracks, when I saw them live they did not play a single song from that list of 42. That's a tragedy. 50 minutes for a band with two albums and an EP? You're gonna be fine.

In apparent desperation, the bar invited loudmouthed bully Jon Taffer to renovate the bar on his no good, very bad cable TV show called Bar Rescue—which airs on a cable channel whose other original shows include such greats as Ink Master: Redemption and Lip Sync Battle.

And so Tonic Lounge was transformed into some weird prison-apocalypse theme bar with cheapo props, weird sponsored cocktails and the terrifying name “Panic Room: Caution High Volume Bar.”

Staff quickly took to the name by answering the bar's phone as "the Penis Room." The sign was even vandalized briefly, perhaps lovingly, to read that way.

I don't mean shitty in a bad way necessarily. Just that it's dirty in the way that small bar/venues tend to be. But the random tiny local bands I saw actually sounded pretty good.

the venue where that performance was shot is called St. Vitus.

it’s basically the metal version of CBGBs. seen a bunch of great bands there, Gatecreeper, Rivers Of Nihil, Uada, etc.

It’s on a non-descript block in Brooklyn. there’s no sign. just a blank gray metal door with an upside down cross. metal af
